Kicking off a new video series, we’re going to be looking at well-known movies, and just quickly digging up some nerdy facts about them that you may or may not know. But hopefully, you didn’t know. We’ll soon find out.

We’re starting with one of our favourite films: Seven.

release. Still, I was one of many who went about watching it the wrong way. I walked into the cinema armed with a mountain of pick and mix, and too much drink (I’ve learned my lesson since), and was expecting a standard

There are occasions where we have sheer luck to thank for the existence of a movie. Take Seven, David Fincher’s atmospheric thriller from 1995; had the studio behind its making, New Line, not sent Fincher the wrong draft of the script, the film may never have been made - at least, not by Fincher, who at that time was still smarting from the experience of making his debut, Alien 3.

‘Seven’: How a David Fincher Mail Mix-Up Lead to the Legendary Ending
David Fincher’s 1995 thriller “Seven,” starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, has a shocking ending that almost didn’t happen due to a mail mix-up.

The cult classic was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, who at the time had optioned the script with “Christmas Vacation” helmer Jeremiah Chechik on board to direct. But Chechik had a different movie in mind and told Walker to rewrite the ending.

[Editor’s Note: Spoilers for “Seven” follow. Proceed at your own risk.]

The movie as we know it ends with John Doe (Kevin Spacey) delivering Detective Mills’ (Pitt) wife’s head in a box. Walker’s reworked version didn’t include that scene. After Chechik moved on from the project, the original version of the script with the shocking twist accidentally landed in the hands of Fincher.

Jeremiah Chechik to direct Goldove’s 'Innocent'
Exclusive: Christopher Plummer features in the story of a Un interpreter caught between the FBI and a criminal dynasty.

Toronto and La-based Goldove Entertainment has brought on Jeremiah Chechik to direct its thriller Little Mizz Innocent.

Goldove and Chechik are finalising a cast list ahead of an anticipated 2017 shoot; Christopher Plummer is already signed to play the antagonist.

The story centres on a seemingly innocent Un interpreter caught up in a war between the FBI and a criminal dynasty.

Chechik directed 2013 rom-com The Right Kind Of Wrong with Ryan Kwanten and has worked extensively in TV in recent years on the likes of Criminal Minds, Gossip Girl and Helix.

Goldove president and CEO Lynda McKoy is also lining up Area 51 sci-fi horror Lumina, described as being in the vein of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and Chronicle.

Christmas approaches, and thus one of the five - count 'em! - Home Alone films must be discussed. It is the law.

In this case, it's the original, which was steered by director Chris Columbus to become a huge breakout hit in 1990. It made Macaulay Culkin a star, and Columbus would duly sign up for a sequel.

And yet he very nearly didn't direct the film.

John Hughes wrote and produced Home Alone, and at around the same time, he was putting National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation together. He hired Columbus to work on that, and all was going well. Until Columbus met Chevy Chase.

As he told Chicago magazine, "John Hughes sent me the script for Christmas Vacation. I love Christmas, so to do a Christmas comedy had been a dream.

How Chevy Chase's Dickish Behavior Turned Home Alone Into a Christmas Classic

If Chevy Chase wasn't such a jerk to director Chris Columbus, the 1990 Christmas movie Home Alone might not have become the beloved holiday classic we fondly look back on now. The film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and Chicago Magazine put together an oral history that revealed a fascinating what-if scenario for its director.

Writer/producer John Hughes asked Columbus, fresh off the abysmal box office performance of a previous movie, if he wanted to direct National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which Hughes wrote. Columbus recounts the story:

In 1989, I directed Heartbreak Hotel, and it was a disaster. It opened on a Friday, and by Wednesday it was only playing at two o’clock in the afternoon. We head back to the 80s and 90s to look at eight famous battles between directors and studio executives over a movie's final cut...

If filmmaking is a compromise between art and commerce, then the final cut is often the point in the process where the tug-of-war between the two becomes the most intense. In their desire to make a film more profitable - often after feedback from preview screenings - studio executives will sometimes request re-edits or the shooting of additional scenes. And occasionally, when directors attempt to resist those changes for whatever reason, the resulting tension between director and studio can reach breaking point.

To illustrate the different ways these tussles over a film's final cut can play out, we're heading back to the 80s and 90s. In some instances, the films that emerged from the editing room were considered to be influential triumphs.
