A couple months after spotlighting the world’s greatest actress, the Criterion Channel have taken a logical next step towards America’s greatest actress. May (or: next week) will bring an eleven-film celebration of Jennifer Jason Leigh, highlights including Verhoeven’s Flesh + Blood, Miami Blues, Alan Rudolph’s Mrs. Parker, her directorial debut The Anniversary Party, and Synecdoche, New York, and a special introduction from Leigh. Another actor’s showcase localizes directorial collaborations: Jimmy Stewart’s time with Anthony Mann, an eight-title series boasting the likes of Winchester ’73 and The Man from Laramie. Two more: a survey of ’80s Asian-American cinema (Chan Is Missing being the best-known) and 14 movies by Seijun Suzuki.
That would be enough for one month (or two), but No Bears and Cette maison will have their streaming premieres, while Criterion Editions offers the Infernal Affairs trilogy (plus its packed set), Days of Heaven, and the aforementioned Chan Is Missing.

(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
There is not an actor in the history of moving pictures who has been more egregiously taken for granted by her industry than Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Critics have always had her back. The New York Times' Janet Maslin got it from the jump when she singled Leigh out as "the only thing worth seeing" in her film debut "Eyes of a Stranger." The better-than-average 1981 slasher film set the tone for Leigh's career in that she plays a victim. Her character is a blind-deaf mute whose condition was brought on by being kidnapped and raped at an early age. The 19-year-old Leigh projects sweetness and innocence, but this young woman is all serrated edges. Because she isn't just a victim. She's a survivor.

People have expressed their outrage over a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee in which 65 women testify that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is a “good person.” The letter, released Friday, came after a women, who remained unidentified, accused Kavanaugh of forcing himself on her sexually while he was a student at Georgetown Preparatory School, an all-boys school in Bethesda, Maryland.
Hollywood figures, including Whitney Cummings and Judd Apatow, argued that the letter from 65 women defied logic. Cummings wrote, “You can treat 65 women with respect and still sexually assault a woman who wasn’t one of those 65 women.” The comedian and creator of CBS’ “2 Broke Girls” added, “Is this actually confusing to people?”
Apatow used fewer words to make his point: “Cosby was really nice to Oprah. So ?” he added to his retweet of Cummings’ post.

Charlie Hunnam: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ gets its Christian Grey (photo: shirtless Charlie Hunnam in ‘Pacific Rim’) In the last couple of weeks, the world has been rocked by several revelations that have left earthlings — depending on their particular expectations, prejudices, and mental health — infuriated, terrified, shocked, thrilled. Am I referring to the reported chemical attacks in Syria and the Obama administration’s determination that the U.S. should get involved in that country’s bloody civil war? Syrius Chemical Civil War? Is Obama endorsing a new video game? Is it in 3D? Nope, that’s not what I’m talking about. Nor am I referring to the ivory trade and the relentless poaching of African elephants, which will quite possibly lead to their extinction in the very, very near future. Or to the nearly 1,000 manatees and dolphins that have met with slow and agonizing deaths in Florida’s grossly polluted waterways.

Chicago – If Fox Faith’s target audience was comprised of atheists, the studio might have churned out this deeply shallow thriller about religious fundamentalism. Though hate-spewing cult leaders like Fred Phelps deserve to be reviled, the vast majority of fictional films about extremism come off as profoundly simple-minded. Like Kevin Smith’s “Red State,” this picture sidesteps its provocative subject matter in favor of routine clichés.
Writer/director Matthew Chapman clearly regards the picture as somewhat of a passion project, since it was spawned by his experience of covering the 9/11 terrorist attacks as a reporter in New York. The unforgettable image of bodies plummeting from the Twin Towers seems to have served as the script’s primary inspiration. As the film opens, a scruffy “non-believer” (Charlie Hunnam) nears the ledge of a rooftop while glaring ominously at the building across the street.

Good films should make you think or leave you with something to ponder for the next few days. It’s not an imperative quality, and the thoughts films inspire are highly subjective, but if you truly subscribe to film being an art form, it ought to do more than just be moving pictures – because that’s what life is. It should propose something. The Ledge does so but to a point that becomes more than just a little overbearing. It seems that Matthew Chapman’s script can’t help but descend into heavy handed pedagoguery on the subject of religious dogma versus free thinking. Now, a great many people may agree with the overarching points its main character, as played by Charlie Hunnam, makes in its rally against the black and white moralizing of the fundamental Christian viewpoint advocated therein by Patrick Wilson. In fact, I would count myself among...

Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy") stars in The Ledge, which was the most unredeemable film at the Sundance Film Festival this year, and that's being kind to unredeemable films. Coming into the festival, it was one of the most buzzed about movies at Sundance, thanks to a cast that also features Liv Tyler, Terrence Howard, and Patrick Wilson, and a hook -- a film told from the point of view of a man standing on a ledge -- that at least sounded compelling.
It is not.
When the film opens, Gavin (Hunnam) is standing on a ledge on the roof of a building, and a police officer, Hollis (Howard) -- who just found out that he had been sterile all his life -- is trying to talk him down. We quickly learn that Gavin isn't on top of that building of his own volition. For reasons that are initially unclear,...

The thriller, out today, borrows a page from Bible-toting film supporters to market a movie with a godless message.
When it comes to promoting his new thriller to an atheist audience, writer/director Matthew Chapman isn’t waiting on a miracle.
The "long-time atheist and pro-science activist" does has faith that an underserved audience, atheists, will support The Ledge, out today from IFC Films, the same way believers support the Christian film industry. Even though he was never as dogmatic in his marketing.
"IFC was neither for nor against marketing The Ledge as the work of an atheist," Chapman tells Fast Company via email. "I think they believed, rightly, that you can see the film as a flat-out thriller which just happens to be propelled by an argument between an atheist and a believer, or you can see the argument as central."

Title: The Ledge Writer-director: Matthew Chapman Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson, Terrence Howard, Chris Gorham A tapestral suspense drama about the intertwined romantic fates of a quartet of Baton Rouge residents – each wounded in their own way, and some more freshly than others — The Ledge exhibits a willingness and desire to let its characters bat back and forth opposing philosophies of life and faith more frequently found on display in literature or off-Broadway theater. An interesting character study only half-successfully masquerading as a kind of specifically plotted romantic thriller, writer-director Matthew Chapman’s movie resembles the smart and sensitive but still gangly teenager pushed out of the door, wearing clothes...

Liv Tyler ends an unusually long break from the movies this year, first with the wild dark comedy Super and today with The Ledge, in which she co-stars as the troubled, born-again Christian wife in the middle of a fundamentalist husband (Patrick Wilson) and hunky atheist neighbor (Charlie Hunnam) sandwich. Faith, sex, love, and mortality collide in writer-director Matthew Chapman's potboiler, which culminates in a suicide showdown also featuring Terrence Howard. It's madness! But it's also, as always, a pleasure to see Tyler back onscreen -- where she has a confirmed interest to return even more frequently in the months and years ahead.

Says He Still Hasn't Seen 'Black Water Transit' & Is Prepping A Period Film Next Matthew Chapman made waves this year at Sundance, with the premiere of "The Ledge," his first time in the director's chair since 1988's "Heart of Midnight." "The Ledge" is a thriller that follows a dangerous affair between the atheist Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) and Shana (Liv Tyler), the wife of the fundamentalist Christian Joe (Patrick Wilson). When Joe learns of the affair, he goes to great lengths to punish Gavin and his wife, believing that he's well within the bounds of justice set down by the…...

Liv Tyler's come a long way since cavorting half-naked with Alicia Silverstone -- at the tender age of 16 -- in her dad Steven Tyler's video "Crazy." Her Aerosmith-fronting father may have given her the leg up in Hollywood, but it's her long career (and, of course, her high-profile portrayal of Elf princess Arwen in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy) that makes her famous now, nearly two decades later.
Tyler's recent choices have been a departure from "Hobbit"-sized productions. She's appeared in two films this year: "Super," an indie co-starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page, and "The Ledge," a philosophical thriller (yes, you read that right) with "Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam -- both movies with smallish budgets and the kind of subtext you won't find in many Hollywood blockbusters.

Matthew Chapman’s “The Ledge” is sure to provoke plenty of ire. The film, Chapman’s first directorial outing since 1988’s “Heart of Midnight,” opens as a fairly conventional thriller – Gavin (Charlie Hunnam), stands out on a ledge and threatens to jump while detective Hollis (Terrence Howard) plays negotiator. As Hollis pieces together that Gavin’s not up here by choice, we jump into a series of flashbacks that explore a forbidden romance that takes root between Gavin and Shana (Liv Tyler), the wife of Joe (Patrick Wilson). Here’s the particular draw of “The Ledge” (and a marketing plot that’s been too…...

At the start of Matthew Chapman's The Ledge , Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy") is seen standing on a ledge ready to take a leap. He's Gavin, a hotel manager whose neighbor and co-worker Shana, played by Liv Tyler, is married to the ultra-religious Joe (Patrick Wilson). Gavin and Joe immediately butt heads based on their beliefs, and that, compounded with Gavin's immediate attraction to Shana, leads to the latter two having an affair. When Joe finds out, we learn what even someone who believes in "turning the other cheek" might do in the name of love. While The Ledge is being marketed as a psychological thriller, it's really more of a complex drama, and playing Shana is another interesting choice for Tyler, who was recently seen in a similarly damaged role...

Actress Liv Tyler spent a day tied to a chair with a ball gag in her mouth filming her new movie - and liked it.
The Armageddon star insisted on being there for co-star Patrick Wilson, who plays her religious fanatic husband in The Ledge, and enjoyed the experience of just watching the film getting made around her.
She tells WENN, "There was quite a hard day because this whole production was a very small budget and we didn't have many days. The subject matter was quite intense and dense and quite tricky to navigate. That day was hard because we only had a couple of hours to shoot that scene in a hotel room on location.
"They didn't get to my close-up until they found out we were getting kicked out of the hotel and had to pull the plug, so I had about, probably, two minutes for it, so I was really crying with rage and anger because I wanted to kill (director) Matthew Chapman.
"I'd been there all day in this chair with this gag in my mouth and really tied to the chair for Patrick. That said, I kind of liked it. Is that weird? Not in a sexual way!
"Obviously when you're acting the more real something can be and the more in the moment you can be, the better."...

Actress Liv Tyler burst onto the scene in the mid-'90s and while she's been slightly less active in recent years, she's appeared in two fairly low budget indies recently, James Gunn's Super and Matthew Chapman's upcoming drama The Ledge . It was for the latter that ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk to her earlier today in a video interview that we'll post shortly. Many have been wondering why everyone else seems to be returning for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit but not Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn or Liv Tyler's Arwen, especially considering what a large part their romance played in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "I actually don't know a lot about it and I haven't talked to Fran or Peter or Philippa at all," she admitted when asked whether Arwen might make...

Hey, if you gotta make the leap for someone, I guess it could be worse than jumping for a sexy Liv Tyler, am I right? More thriller than horror, The Ledge puts one man on precipice of death. Put here by another man (Patrick Wilson), Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) must risk everything for the woman he loves (Liv Tyler) and the woman he has started an affair with. Have a watch of the first trailer for The Ledge, which puts Gavin several hundred feet in the air, with no choice but to jump.

Coming to theaters in limited release on June 29 (and hitting VOD first on May 25) after its premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival is "The Ledge," from writer/director Matthew Chapman. IMDb pegs it as "A thriller in which a battle of philosophies between a fundamentalist Christian and an atheist escalates into a lethal battle of wills." It's sort of a shame those guys -- Patrick Wilson as the Christian, Charlie Hunnam as the atheist -- aren't both named Will, cause then it would be a lethal battle of wills between Wills. But, again, this is why I'm not a screenwriter.
The film also stars Terrence Howard as the guy who tries to talk Hunnam down from the titular molding and Liv Tyler as the woman married to one man who falls for the other, prompting said battle of wills. Too bad she's not name Willa, cause then it could...
