Exclusive: The EFM packages aren’t done just yet. A good one has come together late in the day as we can reveal that Pirates Of The Caribbean director and Oscar winner Gore Verbinski has pulled together a strong cast for his fun-sounding next movie, titled Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
Leading the cast are Oscar winner Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), Michael Peña (The Martian), Emmy nominee Zazie Beetz (Joker), and BAFTA winner Juno Temple (Ted Lasso).
The project marks Verbinski’s return to directing after an eight-year absence.

Austin Butler Turned Down ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Screen Test to Star in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’
Austin Butler had to decide between a blockbuster franchise or working with Quentin Tarantino. The former child star chose Tarantino.
During a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast at the 92nd St Y, Butler revealed that he opted to pass on a screen test for “Top Gun: Maverick” to star in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Tarantino’s film was released in 2019, while “Top Gun: Maverick” came out in 2022.
“I ended up having to choose between going to the screen test for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ or saying yes to Quentin Tarantino,” Butler said. “I’d already met with [Tarantino], so I did that.”
Butler portrayed a fictionalized Charles Manson cult member named Tex, who co-leads the home invasion on Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Butler was poised to do a screen test to play Rooster, the son of Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) late best friend. The...

Austin Butler has revealed that he was in the running to appear in Top Gun: Maverick but was forced to choose between that film and Quentin Tarantino. More here.
What if Austin Butler played Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick instead of Miles Teller? Well, that very nearly happened.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote his new AppleTV+ series Masters Of The Air (out today!), Butler revealed that he was due to audition for Joseph Kosinski’s mammoth sequel.
But at the same time, Quentin Tarantino offered Butler the chance to appear in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
“I ended up having to choose between going to the screen test for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ or saying yes to Quentin Tarantino,” Butler reminisced on the podcast.
Butler made the right choice. Variety reports that he would have lost the race against Teller anyway, as Butler was deemed too young for the part.

How do you choose between Tom Cruise and Quentin Tarantino? It’s a dilemma Austin Butler faced before his Oscar-nominated performance in “Elvis” turned him into a global star. During an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (via People) while promoting his new Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air,” Butler confirmed reports he was in the running to star opposite Cruise in the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.”
“I ended up having to choose between going to the screen test for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ or saying yes to Quentin Tarantino,” Butler said.
Tarantino had offered the rising star a role in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.” Because Butler had wanted to work with the “Pulp Fiction” director “for so long,” he wasn’t going to let a potential Tom Cruise blockbuster get in the way.

Republic Pictures President Dan Cohen and producer Annabelle Dunne were among the main representatives of William Friedkin’s last film The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial at its posthumous world premiere at the Venice Film Festival over the weekend.
Taking place less than a month after Friedkin died at the age of 87 on August 7, it was an emotional night for both.
Alongside tributes from this year’s jury president Damien Chazelle and Venice director Alberto Barbera, Dunne took to the stage to share anecdotes, including how Guillermo del Toro and J.J. Abrams became involved as back-up directors after Friedkin’s age made it impossible to secure a completion bond.
Deadline caught up with the pair on the terrace of the Venice Lido’s Excelsior Hotel the next day, ahead of a screening of Friedkin’s The Exorcist in Venice Classics.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

Exclusive: William Friedkin has been plenty selective in the films he directs, but the heralded helmer of The French Connection, The Exorcist, To Live and Die in L.A. and others has found both a script and a star he could not resist.
Kiefer Sutherland will star as Lt. Commander Queeg in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, using a 50-year-old play script written by Herman Wouk from his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. It is being plotted for a January start, and casting is just getting underway. Annabelle Dunne and Matt Parker are producing. Sutherland’s deal is being finalized.

As Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” continues to wow audiences, Austin Butler is winning rave reviews and Oscar buzz for his portrayal of the iconic showman.
Casting director Denise Chamian, C.S.A., first spotted Butler’s talent in 2013 when she was casting Wes Ball’s film “The Maze Runner.” Butler didn’t get a part because he played a little too young, but he remained on her radar.
Butler came close to playing Rooster in “Top Gun: Maverick,” which Chamian also cast, but lost out to Miles Teller. However, the tables would turn when Chamian put Butler forward for Elvis in Luhrmann’s film. While Luhrmann had his own ideas for the film’s star, including Teller and Harry Styles, Butler ultimately proved he had what it takes — and the rest is history.
Below, Chamian breaks down her casting process and explains why Butler was fit for the part of the King.

Top Gun: Maverick star Greg Tarzan Davis is here to remind you that small moments can still leave big impressions.
In 2018, Davis auditioned for a bit part in Harrison Ford’s The Call of the Wild, and he made such an impact on casting director Denise Chamian that she quickly called him back to audition for a classified project. This time around, the film has stacked up a couple of notable names: Harrison Ford will step into the role of John Thornton, and Dan Stevens will play a currently untitled character. No further casting has yet been announced, but Denise Chamian is on board...

Ruth Wilson is about to have a moment.
The 31-year-old British actress -- best known for her work on the television series "Luther" and "The Prisoner" -- stars as Rebecca Reid in Disney's "The Lone Ranger," the film's female lead. What was required of Wilson during the film's nearly 150-day production process was quite demanding. She even had to get thrown from a speeding train onto a speeding horse. Well, sort of.
"I was on a fake horse," Wilson told HuffPost Entertainment. "There was a stuntwoman who did the wide version of the shot and did it properly. We were all amazed by her." Not that the fake horse wasn't terrifying as well. "We were going along on a road rig at 40 miles per hour when we were shooting it, so it felt pretty real," Wilson said.

It.s one thing that Twitter has made a huge dent in the way that news gets revealed, but it.s another thing entirely to consider Twitter actually being used to make the news itself. And I.m not talking about suggestive pictures either, because that would probably be highly illegal in this case. Instead, this is a story about how young actor Blake Cooper was able to use social media site to land a role in the upcoming film The Maze Runner Wes Ball, the director of the James Dashner adaptation, was recently bombarded on Twitter by Cooper, who sent the filmmaker a bunch of messages claiming, .I.m your Chuck!,. referring to the youngest character within the novel.s narrative. Apparently the Tweets led to Ball contacting Denise Chamian, a casting director for Fox, who reached out to Cooper. It was decided a video-recorded audition would be allowed,...

You know, Twitter has changed the world and the way that we interact within it. It has helped organize revolutions, report news, and now? Now it's led to a key role in the upcoming adaptation of James Dashner's The Maze Runner being cast.
Director Wes Ball just tweeted that Blake Cooper (pictured) got the pivotal role of Chuck in The Maze Runner. Cooper got Ball’s attention with a flurry of tweets to the director basically saying, “I’m your Chuck!” Ball finally connected the young actor with Fox’s casting director Denise Chamian, who allowed Cooper to send in a self-taped audition for the role. It got him the job. Seriously, how insane is that?
Cooper will join the previously announced Dylan O’Brien ("Teen Wolf"), Will Poulter, Kaya Scodelario, Aml Ameen, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. Filming is set to begin in May in Baton Rouge for a February 14, 2014, release.

"From the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made." —Immanuel Kant.
Even before I knew what a cinephilic sensibility was, mine was being shaped by the evolving filmic projects of William Friedkin and their focus on humanity's crooked timber. As a participatory member of the Gay Movement of the early 70s, I resisted the scriptural representation in Friedkin's The Boys In the Band (1970) and—a decade later—Cruising (1980), but was undeniably swept up in the Catholicized hysteria surrounding The Exorcist (1973), which I managed to catch at its Bible Belt premiere in Little Rock, Arkansas. The French Connection (1971) challenged Peter Yate's earlier Bullitt (1968) with its iconic car chase and Sorcerer (1977) dazzled me with its suspenseful virtuosity and has continued to intrigue me with its court battle over copyright. To Live And Die in L.A. (1985) introduced me to the talent of such actors as William Petersen and Willem DeFoe; but,...

It seems DreamWorks hasn't found just the right boy for a role in the Chris Pine-starrer Welcome to People. Director Alex Kurtzman (part of the Kurtzman-Roberto Orci writing team behind Star Trek and the Transformers movies) is holding an open casting call in Los Angeles on Saturday to find a 12-year old boy who is "athletic, independent and confident." Assumably, the boy has to look somewhat like he could be the child of Elizabeth Banks since she'll play his mother.
The role is the third lead in the film behind Pine (Unstoppable) and Banks (The Next Three Days, Imagine That). The story is about a guy (Pine) who discovers at his father's funeral that he has an older sister (Banks) and young nephew he never knew about when he's directed to deliver them $100,000 -- something he'd rather not do. The film is striving for a PG-13 rating and...

Always dreamed of starring in a big Hollywood movie? Not opposed to that movie also featuring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks? You might just be in luck... if you're a male, aged 11 to 13, and can get yourself to Los Angeles by Saturday.
DreamWorks has announced that they will be holding an open casting this Saturday (December 4) in L.A. to fill a lead role in the upcoming drama "Welcome to People." The studio is looking for someone to play a character named Josh, who's described as "male, 11-13 years-old, Caucasian, athletic, independent and confident." If you fit that description, get thee to L.A. pronto. Candidates don't need to have any previous acting experience, nor do they have to prepare anything for the audition. They must be able to memorize large quantities of dialogue, however, and should be comfortable with PG-13 language (who isn't these days?).
