    Character actor, who started in small roles in British films, alternating in both comedy and drama. He had a rare lead as a town drunk in Time, Gentlemen, Please! (1952), after which he subsided once again to lesser roles. He only made his stage debut at the Abbey Theatre half way through his career, but became busier from the mid-60s with engagements at the Old Vic and the National Theatre. On screen, he was seen in just about anything, from war movies to horror. He even popped up in a tiny role as a general in "Star Wars Episode IV" in 1977.
