Drive-In Dust Offs: From A Whisper To A Scream (1987)

Ever since seeing Creepshow (1982) when it first arrived on video, I’ve been enamored with anthology films; reaching back to Amicus’ ‘60s and ‘70s treasures like Tales from the Crypt (1972) all the way up to Epic PicturesTales of Halloween (2015), omnibuses scratch a very particular itch for this viewer. Falling somewhere in the middle of my terrorline is From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), a proud and nasty addition to the sub-genre. This bugger does not mess around.

Released by Moviestore Entertainment stateside and by Cineplex-Odeon up here in Canada the following year, From a Whisper to a Scream (Aka The Offspring, which is what I knew it as) made back its $ 1.1 million budget plus a few dollars more, and the film received mixed reviews from critics in its limited release. Scrappy and mean, with a delightful turn from Vincent Price in the wraparound, From a Whisper to a Scream

Quentin Tarantino’s 9 Strangest and Most Surprising Movie Projects

Quentin Tarantino’s 9 Strangest and Most Surprising Movie Projects
When you think of Quentin Tarantino, classic films like “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Django Unchained” certainly come to mind. But what about the critically reviled “Saturday Night Live” sketch adaptation “It’s Pat”? Or the Michael Bay Alcatraz action movie “The Rock”? Tarantino’s fingerprints have been all over the movies ever since his breakout debut in 1992, and some of his projects are way more bizarre than others.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume Xxxv Review

Brad Cook reviews Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume Xxxv…

Shout! Factory’s track record with MST3K sets has been pretty solid ever since they took over the license from Rhino. They’ve done a great job of including bonus features in every four-disc volume, along with four mini-posters based on the disc case covers. Some sets are more memorable than others, of course, such as the one where they included all the Gamera movies they skewered, or the volume that celebrated the show’s 25th anniversary, with an excellent retrospective documentary (both came in nice tin cases too).

Volume Xxxv is a set that falls in the “good” category. If you’re a completist, there’s nothing stopping you from snapping it up. If not, you’ll want to read this review and decide for yourself. As always, of course, the episodes live up to the series’ typical standard of excellence.

Pieces of Terror: Tales Of Halloween and a Look Back at Horror Anthologies

  • DailyDead
With the impossibly fun Tales of Halloween now in wide release, it seems like as good a time as any to dig deep into one of my favorite subgenres of horror: the anthology film. From Tales from the Crypt to Tales from the Darkside to Tales from the Hood, the horror anthology offers something for everyone. And apparently that something is “tales.”

In speaking with most of the directors from Tales of Halloween, there was consensus in their feelings about what makes for a great anthology film: singularity of vision and consistency of quality. Both can be difficult to achieve, as the format practically dictates that some segments be stronger than others or express a different voice. But when an anthology can achieve even one of those things, there’s the potential for real horror movie magic.

There are great anthologies made by one filmmaker, among them Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath,

Full Moon to release Jeff Burr’s Puppet Master 4 on Blu-ray

Maniacal Full Moon flick hits Blu-ray. This writer counts legendary B-movie mogul Charles Band as both a friend and a colleague, editing as I do the Band published horror film magazine Delirium.
