The son of journalist Heywood Broun (1888-1939) and Ruth Hale, an early feminist who was the United States' first female movie critic, Heywood Hale Broun was a longtime sports commentator, especially with CBS Sports and News. He was noted for his eloquent speaking manner, his trademark handlebar mustache, and the colorful and garish sport coats which he wore while reporting.
