A blues guitarist, he started out playing zydeco with accordionist Clifton Chenier. In the 1950s he went by the name "Guitar Junior", and led a band in Port Arthur, TX. He moved to Chicago at the urging of singer Sam Cooke, and changed his name to Lonnie Brooks because there was already a Guitar Junior in town.
