HFPA President Weighs in on Oscar Changes: ‘They Have to Do Something to Keep the Viewers’

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association knows what it takes to put on a major televised awards show — they do it every year with the Golden Globes.

So, it’s no surprise that HFPA president Meher Tatna understands why the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is shaking up the Oscar rulebook again.

“I feel for them,” Tatna told Variety on Thursday night at the HFPA’s annual grants banquet at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. “They have to do something to keep the viewers engaged and this is what they thought was a good idea.”

Lena Waithe agrees that it’s time to try some new things. “I think the Oscars have to change,” the Emmy winner said. “I think they need to change because the world is changing, audiences are changing, people are changing.”

Bravo’s ‘Dirty John’ Series Won’t Follow ‘Walking Dead’s Path – TCA

  • Deadline
Bravo’s new crime anthology Dirty John is based on the podcast from Los Angeles Times crime reporter Chris Goffard, and it detailed the case of Orange County mom and successful interior designer Debra Newell and her seduction by “Dirty” John Meehan, a guy with a treacherous track record when it came to women.

Connie Britton, who recently finished work on the Fox Ryan Murphy series 9-1-1, stars as Debra while Eric Bana plays the sociopath Meehan. Goffard’s podcast detailed how AMC’s The Walking Dead served as an inspiration for Newell and her daughters (played by Juno Temple and Julia Garner) in regards to their survival. Without spoiling too much, let’s just say there’s a lot of fighting techniques to be learned on The Walking Dead.

However Dirty John Ep Alexandra Cunningham told reporters today that The Walking Dead won’t be factoring into the

‘Dirty John’ Team Talks Expanding Perspective of Bravo Adaptation

  • Variety
When Bravo ordered an eight-episode limited scripted series based on the “Dirty John” podcast, the production team had a wealth of material on which to base the show. Beyond Christopher Goffard’s audio telling of the story were numerous La Times articles. But additionally, the real Debra Newell is still alive and has been a resource for her portrayer, Connie Britton.

“We actually spent a good deal of time together and I really like her a lot, so it’s been such a great experience for me, and new experience for me, to sit down and really get to ask her questions — get to ask the character that I play questions,” Britton said at a Television Critics Assn. set visit for the show Wednesday. “It’s a really unique privilege to experience. And also, it’s helping to give so much insight into the story in a way that maybe

Bravo's 'Dirty John' True-Crime Series Wants to Cast a Spell on Viewers

Most people think they wouldn't fall for a con artist, like Connie Britton's character, Debra, in the forthcoming first season of Bravo's true-crime anthology Dirty John. But showrunner Alexandra Cunningham wants them to know they absolutely could.

The series is based on the reporting and podcast from the L.A. Times' Chris Goffard about a con man named "Dirty" John Meehan (Eric Bana) and the woman who fell for him, Debra Newell. ‘American Horror Story: Apocalypse’ Releases Eerie First Trailer (Watch)

  • Variety
The world is officially ending. FX took to Twitter Monday to debut a new teaser trailer for the eighth chapter of “American Horror Story,” titled “Apocalypse.”

True to “Ahs” form, the teaser features an array of disturbing images, starting with an hourglass womb incubating a demonic infant, followed by quick shots of skulls, scorpions, nuclear explosions, and the satanic symbol.

The network previously announced that the eighth season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology series will be a crossover between seasons 1 and 3 of the show, respectively named “Murder House” and “Coven.” As such, the unborn child depicted in the teaser likely represents Michael Langdon, the devil offspring of sadistic teen Tate Langdon (Evan Peters) and his rape victim Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton) — two key players in the show’s inaugural season.

First Promo Spot For Eric Bana and Connie Britton's Bravo Series Dirty John

Bravo TV has brought us our first look at the limited series Dirty John. I am super excited for this. I listened to the podcast of the same name a few months ago, and it was so crazy! It tells the true story of Debra Newell, who will be played by the incredible Connie Britton, a self-made Orange County interior designer, and her rocky relationship with the charming and sociopathic John Meehan, who will be played by Eric Bana

Dirty John comes from Los Angeles Times reporter Christopher Goffard. "It centers on John Meehan (Bana), a handsome and romantic charmer who sweeps Debra Newell (Britton) off her feet and pulls her into his web of lies. The series chronicles the true story of how a romance with Meehan spiraled into secrets, denial and manipulation."

I don't want to give too much of the story away, because it is such a crazy,

FX Renews American Horror Story For Season 10

FX sure does love Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story series because they just renewed it for a tenth season ahead of the show’s eighth season premiere. This shouldn't come as a surprise as they've been able to keep the series fresh and interesting over the years.

There's no information on what Season 10 will entail. Hell, we're still learning new information about Season 8, which has been titled American Horror Story: Apocalypse. This series has been all over the place so it's hard to even speculate on what Season 10 would entail.

All we know about Apocalypse is that it's set in the not-too-distant future and creator Ryan Murphy previously revealed that it would be a crossover with Murder House (Season 1) and Coven (Season 3). He also said, "It’s a season unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it. There’s a huge thing that happens

Jessica Lange Will Return for ‘American Horror Story’ Season 8

  • The Wrap
Jessica Lange Will Return for ‘American Horror Story’ Season 8
Surprise, witches! Bet you thought you’d seen the last of Jessica Lange on “American Horror Story.”

Guess again, because the franchise alum will be returning to the series for the upcoming eighth installment, “Apocalypse” — a crossover between Season 1 (“Murder House”) and Season 3 (“Coven”) — star Sarah Paulson told TheWrap during the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday.

Lange played the creepy next door neighbor Constance Langdon in “Murder House” and (former) Supreme witch Fiona Goode in “Coven.” But she exited the franchise after Season 4 aka “Freak Show” and hasn’t returned for even a cameo since. However, Paulson was given permission by creator Ryan Murphy — who wasn’t sitting on the panel — to reveal Lange is returning for Season 8.

9-1-1 Season 2 Trailer: There's Nowhere To Hide!

When 9-1-1 returns for Season 2 this fall, the hit Fox drama will have some fresh faces.

The official trailer for the new season showed us Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Guzman in action, and they are poised to be great additions to the cast.

Hewitt is playing Maddie Buckley aka Buck's sister, a 911 operator with a dark past, who will find herself in a horrifying situation when the drama returns.

The big disaster focuses on an 8.2 magnitude earthquake bringing Los Angeles to its knees and the characters will have to fight for their lives and for the people they are tasked with saving.

Hewitt will help fill the void left by Connie Britton who exited at the close of 9-1-1 Season 1. While there are no plans to bring Britton back as Abby, there's a chance that if schedules work out, she could pop back up.

9-1-1 is

Billy Eichner Teases “Insane” Eighth Season Of American Horror Story

The apocalypse has come for FX’s American Horror Story.

Ryan Murphy’s delightfully gothic anthology series is now just five weeks (and change) out from its hotly-anticipated premiere, when viewers will be able to see the worlds of “Murder House” and “Coven” collide in spectacular fashion.

Yes, the long-awaited Ahs crossover event is finally – finally! – about to become a reality, and if lead star Billy Eichner is to be believed (h/t Bloody Disgusting), September’s “Apocalypse” will dial things up to 11. In a word: it’s “insane,” and the fact that Eichner is nearing the end of his own stint on season 8 leads us to believe that a trailer is imminent.

We’ll likely have to wait a little while longer before FX is ready to conjure up a new blend of madness, but this is still a pretty exciting tease in and of itself:

Just back from shooting @Ahsfx.

‘9-1-1’ Star Jennifer Love Hewitt on Taking Over Connie Britton’s Headset
When “9-1-1” returns this fall, there’s going to be a new lady taking all the emergency calls Ryan Murphy can dream up, and her name is Jennifer Love Hewitt — err, Maddie.

During the Television Critics Association press tour Thursday, Hewitt joined her new co-stars to discuss joining the Fox drama for its second season, after leading lady Connie Britton’s made her series exit at the end of her one-year deal — and took 911 operator Abby with her.

Luckily, Hewitt will be picking up that headset to help keep things under control in Season 2, if that’s at all possible. Especially because it sounds like Maddie has some demons to deal with on her own.

‘9-1-1’ Leaving All Doors Open For Connie Britton Return, Ep Tim Minear Says – TCA
While there are no current plans to bring back Connie Britton’s Abby Clark character for Season 2 of Fox’s 9-1-1, co-creator/Ep Tim Minear wanted TV critics at TCA to know “We are honoring the character of Abby; it was an important role in the first season” and that “the front door, back door, and side door are always open for her to return.”

Britton played the 911 operator in the Ryan Murphy drama’s first season; she had a one-year deal. This season, Jennifer Love Hewitt is cast as 911 operator Maddie Kendall. Hewitt said she hopes to stay with the show for the rest of its run. She describes Maddie as a nurse who was in an abusive relationship, “pretty broken and needing to start over,” and becomes a 911 operator to help people with her nursing knowledge, “but stay in a safe place, given her situation.”

Hewitt will join series stars Angela Bassett,
