Born into an impoverished Swedish family. Apprenticed to a painter at 15. Travelled to London via Paris and worked as assistant to portrait and marine painter George Johansen. Moved to America in 1901. Became fascinated with the Southwest of the United States and lived among native Americans for some time, creating a number of fine paintings. Later taught art at the California Art Institute and at the Santa Barbara School of Arts. Worked as art director in Hollywood, notably at United Artists, 1926-27. Returned to Sweden in 1934, but settled permanently in the U.S. after World War II.
