With husband/writer Allan Manings, co-created the popular sitcom One Day at a Time (1975). The show's premise, centered around a single working mom and her kids, was inspired by Blake's experiences as a divorced mother in the 1950s. Ironically, her daughter, Meredith Baxter, later starred as a married sitcom mom in Family Ties (1982).

Singer-actress Whitney Houston was named after her.

Great grandmother of Sophie, Bella, & Eli.
She was the daughter of Martha Mae (Wilkerson) and Harry C. Whitney. Her father was from Texas and her mother was from Arkansas. Her father was an agent of the U.S. Secret Service, who had served as a bodyguard to President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924, term 1913-1921).
