The World War Two drama War Sailor — which debuted at last year’s Toronto Film Festival — swept Norway’s Amanda Awards last night, taking four main awards.
The War Sailor haul included best actor for Pål Sverre Hagen. This is his third Amanda and second consecutive win. Ine Marie Wilmann won the best supporting actress award for portraying Cecilia in the pic.
The film, directed by Norwegian filmmaker Gunnar Vikene, centers on Alfred Garnes, a working-class sailor who has recently become the father of a third child. He and his childhood friend Sigbjørn Kvalen are working on a merchant ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when World War II breaks out. They are unarmed civilians on the front lines of a war they never asked to join. The two men struggle for survival in a spiral of violence and death, where German submarines may attack their valuable vessels at any moment.

The industry activities of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival have been steadily expanding in recent years with more sessions and an increase in international guests headed to the Estonian capital for the 2019 edition which starts today, November 25.
Remaining relatively small has proven one of Tallinn’s greatest advantages, according to Marge Liiske, managing director of Industry@Tallinn and Baltic Event.
“Even French producers say it’s easier for them to approach French sales agents here than it is in Cannes,” she says.

The European Film Academy — more than 3,000 filmmakers across Europe – voted for this year’s European Film Awards. At the 29th EFAs ceremony on Saturday in Wroclaw, Poland, in a major rebuke to the Cannes competition jury that snubbed German director Maren Ade’s three-hour father-daughter comedy “Toni Erdmann,” her country’s foreign Oscar selection took home five top awards: Best European Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor, and Actress. The awards ceremony is hosted by different countries each year.
Three Scandinavian Oscar entries: “A Man Called Ove” (Sweden), “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki” (Finland), and “Land of Mine” (Denmark) won awards, along with Oscar submissions from Italy (documentary “Fire at Sea”) and Switzerland (animated film “My Life as a Zucchini”). Andrzej Wajda, whose film “Afterimage” is Poland’s official Oscar entry, won an honorary award.
