When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts as showrunners. By the end of season two, both had left the show, with Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise stepping in as showrunners to right the ship.

Star Trek: Discovery memorably pulled off a shocking twist in its first season, with the U.S.S Discovery’s captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) turning out to be an evil doppelganger from the Mirror Universe. Things got complicated in the latter episodes of the run, but ultimately Lorca ended up dead and the Mirror Georgiou remained in the Prime Universe – ahead of her own spinoff show.
As fans of the series will know, though, season 1 changed a lot over the course of production due to co-creator Bryan Fuller leaving the project. It turns out the re-introducution of the Mirror Universe was one of his concepts, but he originally intended to use it to explore a bold, nuanced theme.
Here’s what Fuller told Robert Meyer in a recent episode of his Robservations YouTube show.
“The thing that really fascinated me in sitting down and crafting the story for Discovery was the human condition.

Like a shot through the heart, Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition release of Valentine has arrived and is filled with nothing but love for Jamie Blanks’ underappreciated 2001 cinematic love letter to slashers and giallo films. And as someone who has been a fan of the movie since its theatrical release, I am totally a smitten kitten over all the awesomeness contained on this new Valentine Blu, making for an excellent celebration of one of the most overlooked modern horror whodunits, and I hope it helps folks who may have dismissed it in the past realize just how much fun Valentine truly is.
For the uninitiated, Valentine first transports us back to the year 1988 where, at a middle school dance, social reject Jeremy Melton attempts to ask a bunch of the popular girls to dance, getting wildly rejected before finding one gal who would make out with him, but...

Star Trek: Discovery season 1 drew a lot of controversy due to how disconnected it was in tone and continuity from previous Trek shows, with everything from the use of the F-word in one scene to the redesigned Klingons offending some fans. In contrast, season 2 is going very much in the opposite direction and attempting to bridge the gap between Discovery and The Original Series, which is set 10 years later in Trek history.
This “syncing up with canon” is something that showrunner Alex Kurtzman’s very keen to do from now on. Kurtzman took over on Discovery this season, replacing previous EPs Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts, and told StarTrek.com that he hopes the series will last several years yet, as long as the story keeps being refreshed.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 2, Episode 1, “Brother.”]
The Season 2 premiere of “Star Trek: Discovery” definitely feels like the beginning of something. “Brother,” launching Thursday on CBS All Access, is all about establishing a new status quo, a new chain of command, and most importantly a new mission focused on exploration over conflict. Where that mission will take this ambitious yet flawed series, however, is as yet a mystery.
Picking up moments after Season 1 ended, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) of the U.S.S. Enterprise (you may have heard of it) comes on board Discovery with news from Starfleet — the Enterprise has been disabled by massive systems failure, so he’s taking command of the good ship Discovery to investigate some odd signals that “have the Federation’s hackles up.” That quest leads the Discovery to a rescue mission on a crumbling asteroid, but no real answers as yet to what those signals might be,...

Welcome to “TV Take,” Variety‘s television podcast. On this week’s episode Daniel Holloway, Variety’s executive editor of television, sits down with “Star Trek: Discovery” showrunner Alex Kurtzman to discuss the show’s upcoming second season on CBS All Access.
Later, Variety‘s TV critics Caroline Framke and Daniel D’Addario discuss HBO’s “True Detective” Season 3 and Netflix’s “Sex Education.” Then, Holloway and Variety TV reporter Joe Otterson discuss the latest developments with the “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot.
Kurtzman took over as showrunner on “Discovery” following the sudden exit of co-showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg back in June. According to Kurtzman, his love for the show drove him to take over himself rather than hire an outsider.

Star Trek: Discovery didn’t have the most overwhelmingly positive of receptions when its first season debuted in 2017. Old school Trekkies didn’t enjoy the CBS All Access series’ attempts to make the franchise darker and edgier and also complained about how it tampered with long-established Trek history. Thankfully, the anticipation for season 2 is much more encouraging, as there’s a feeling that many of season 1’s mistakes have been fixed.
Part of the change in direction comes from the change of showrunners. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts left the production after season 1, meaning Alex Kurtzman – writer and producer on the first two Kelvin timeline movies – took over as showrunner. And while speaking with Digital Spy, he voiced his hopes that the new, improved Discovery can last for many years yet.

When Rainn Wilson’s Harry Mudd makes his entrance into CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery,” he does so in dramatic fashion, stepping onto a cargo bay deck through the mouth of a gormagander. The fictional creature is referred to in the episode and by the show’s creative team as a “space whale” and looks the way it sounds: Picture a whale redesigned to swim through space instead of water. “Discovery” writers dreamed up the creature as a way for Mudd to sneak on board in an episode where he attempts to take over the show’s starship. The gormagander is the central element of what quickly becomes an action scene when Mudd begins firing at crew members. Initially attempted as a practical effect, it was ultimately executed by the show’s digital-effects team.

“Star Trek: Discovery” executive producer Alex Kurtzman will take the helm for the sci-fi drama’s season-two premiere.
Kurtzman is set to direct the debut episode of the new season, which is slated to begin production in April in Toronto. No air date has yet been scheduled for the premiere.
Season two will pick up where the season-one finale left off. After bringing the Federation-Klingon war to a non-violent conclusion, the crew of the USS Discovery sets off from Earth to Vulcan, but — spoiler alert — stops along the way to answer a distress call from the USS Enterprise. The finale’s closing shot sets up a likely meeting between the Discovery’s Cmdr. Michael Burnham and Capt. Christopher Pike, who commanded the Enterprise prior to the tenure of James T. Kirk.

Star Trek: Discovery concluded its maiden voyage with a season finale that tied up a ton of loose ends — and offered a tantalizing visit from an old friend.
As the Klingons close in on Earth, “Captain Georgiou” (really, the evil mirror version) quickly gets used to being in command of the Discovery. She snaps at a crew member who refers to Qo’noS as the Klingons’ home planet: “Klingons are animals, and they don’t have homes.” The plan is to map the surface of Kronos...

No, your eyes didn’t deceive you: You really did catch a glimpse of the most famous starship in the known universe at the end of Sunday’s Star Trek: Discovery finale.
After resolving the war between Starfleet and the Klingons, Burnham and the Discovery crew were headed to Vulcan to meet their new captain when they received a distress signal from a ship with a registry number starting with Ncc-17. Warning: This post contains spoilers from Sunday’s episode of Star Trek: Discovery.
What part of the universe — or which universe — did the Star Trek: Discovery crew find themselves in now… and who didn’t survive the trip?
Sunday’s winter premiere picked up right where we left off, with a botched spore-drive jump landing the Discovery in an unknown quadrant of space. The crew soon discovered they’re stuck in a parallel universe — the same “mirror universe” that Captain Kirk encountered in the classic Trek episode “Mirror, Mirror.” (You know, the one where a goateed alt-Spock taught us that all facial hair is evil.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Star Trek: Discovery’s” fall finale, “Into the Forest I Go.”]
In its first nine episodes, “Star Trek: Discovery” has taken its crew on quite the adventure, finally landing them in an unidentified mystery location thanks to Stamets (Anthony Rapp) making one spore drive jump too many. But the audience has also gone on an emotional journey with the series’ characters, ranging from Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) despondency after an unsuccessful mutiny to the loony side-effects Stamets is experiencing from the tardigrade DNA. But it’s the journey by Discovery’s newest crew member, Ash Tyler (Shazad Latif), that’s been the most erratic and confusing.
The Pow from the Battle of the Binary Stars landed in a Klingon prison cell for seven months, during which he was able to survive because his Klingon jailor L’Rell (Mary Chief) took a personal liking to him. Upon his escape, Tyler seemed strangely well-adjusted despite his ordeal, but upon seeing L’Rell again on the Sarcophagus ship,...

[Editor’s Note: Spoilers for “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 1 Episode 9, “Into the Forest I Go,” follow.]
“Star Trek: Discovery” fans thrown off guard by the midseason finale’s ending, guess what? That was the plan. According to showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, that’s exactly what they wanted.
“Every couple of episodes, right around the time the audience feels like, ‘Oh, I know what you’re doing,’ we switch it up,” Berg told IndieWire. “It became a natural rhythm for the show, and it makes it really fun for us, the writers, everybody, really. Because it’s a way to keep it lively.”
The final moments of Episode 9, “Into the Forest I Go,” find the Discovery lost in unknown territory following a massive malfunction with the ship’s spore drive. “It felt like a great place to end the first half of the season, too,” Harberts said. “We had a lot of fun tracking the debate that the fans are having about where they think...

The new design for the Klingons in “Star Trek: Discovery” has been polarizing with fans. Some are intrigued by the new take on the bellicose alien species, while others decry what they perceived to be flouting canon. On the most recent “After Trek,” lead creature designer Neville Page and prosthetics/special FX makeup effects department head Glenn Hetrick explained that Bryan Fuller, who has since departed the show, was a huge influence on what the revamped Klingons look like.
“The biggest thing we did was we removed the hair,” Page said, which allowed the prosthetics department to reveal “detail on the back of the head… and the cool stuff underneath.”

Page also revealed the signature ridges contain extra sensory receptors, and the spinal column grows up the back of the head, which is full of nerve endings.

2017-10-23T10:10:19-07:00'Star Trek: Discovery' Gets a Second-Season Renewal
The sci-fi franchise series Star Trek: Discovery isn't yet halfway through its first season, but CBS is betting on the series by ordering a second season already. That's not surprising, since the network hopes that the series will draw subscribers to its CBS All Access streaming platform, the only place that Star Trek: Discovery is available. It could be a long time before new episodes of the series are ready, though, so new subscribers might find that they've signed up for a service that doesn't offer any new episodes of the series that convinced them to sign up in the first place.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Star Trek: Discovery” Season 1, Episode 5, titled “Choose Your Pain.”]
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Sarek (James Frain) on “Star Trek: Discovery,” and a sneak peek that played during after show “After Trek” finally gave fans a glimpse of the Vulcan ambassador. Sadly, it was not a very encouraging vision.
In a clip for Episode 6, Burnham is in the mess hall when she starts to feel funny. Everything gets wavy, and then she clutches her side and collapses. At that moment we see that Sarek has also similarly collapsed, and it’s his link with Burnham that causes her mysterious reaction. As one viewer pointed out, this could be Sarek having a heart attack since Vulcans’ hearts are around where human livers are. What could have triggered this is unknown for now, but since most Vulcans are vegetarian, it’s doubtful cholesterol has anything to do with it. Perhaps another stressor is the culprit?

After getting diverted en route to a prison mine, coming on board the Discovery isn’t Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) biggest surprise. She’s also shocked to see former Shenzhou crewmate Saru (Doug Jones) is on board, this time as the First Officer. The Kelpien is a brand new alien race that’s been introduced to the series, but not much is known about them except that they’re a prey species.

Walk onto the soundstages at Toronto's Pinewood Studios, a massive complex of airplane hangers jutting out into Lake Ontario, and you'll see transporter rooms, engine rooms and lots of vaguely futuristic hallways. A producer is giving journalists an impromptu tour, pointing out small details like the Malaysian puppets hanging in an officer's ready room and bragging about the creation processes of phasers, badges and alien races.
Walk a little further, and you'll come to a gleaming bridge. A Starfleet commander's seat sits in the middle. There are work stations on both sides,...

The idea of a “fall TV season” feels particularly antiquated in 2017, as two of the year’s buzziest series (“Game of Thrones” and “Twin Peaks”) have already wrapped for the year. Fall may even be a bit of an afterthought now compared to spring, as networks aim to catch Emmy voters with prestige TV premieres when campaign season gets underway.
And yet, there’s nearly 70 years of tradition with the fall TV season. It’s when Nielsen still resets the calendar for the new TV year; when blue chip advertisers like the automotive sector roll out their own new wares; football season returns (don’t discount that huge impact on TV schedules); and the weather gets chilly, which conceivably means more viewers watching TV indoors.
This year, they’ll find a lot of familiar titles on broadcast TV, including the return of NBC’s “Will & Grace”; a prequel to “The Big Bang Theory,...

According to departed "Star Trek: Discovery" showrunner Brian Fuller ("Star Trek: Voyager"), the producer was envisioning not another "to boldly go" "Star Trek" series, but multiple serialized anthology shows "...that would begin with 'Star Trek: Discovery', as a prequel to the first series, then journey past those eras of 'Captain James T. Kirk', 'Captain Jean Luc Picard'" and a whole lot more:
"The original pitch was to do for science-fiction what 'American Horror Story' had done for horror," said Fuller.

Star Trek: Discovery, the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005, finally arrives this September on CBS before boldly going where no Trek series has gone before, CBS All Access. The series is also the first since J.J. Abrams introduced the alternate "Kelvin" timeline in his films, though Discovery will be set in the original, "prime" timeline, taking place ten years before the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show will explore the Federation-Klingon cold war in a more serialized format than previous seasons. That is how Discovery stands now, as envisioned by showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts. But, under original showrunner and creator Bryan Fuller, Discovery was almost something very different; something much more original and ambitious.
Entertainment Weekly's cover story this week is Star Trek: Discovery, where the magazine reveals some previously unreleased information about what Fuller's vision for Discovery entailed.
