And the votes are in—which two are headed home? On an elimination show, the couples with the least public votes will separate and dance solos in their style. Then the final say is down to the judges, as they decide which of them are the weakest.

The show opens up with an ensemble number as all the dancers wearing vaguely Cabaret-the musical-inspired

‘American Idol’: Music from the Movies
Michael Becker / Fox “American Idol’s” Final 8: Clockwise from Left: Jacob Lusk, Haley Reinhart, Paul McDonald, Srefano Langone, Casey Abrams, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and James Durbin.

After last week’s Pia Toscano upset it is fair to say it’s anybody’s game on “American Idol.” It’s also evident the judges are weighing every word they utter, fearful they spur another upset among the final eight contestants.

Always unique, raspy-voiced Paul McDonald kicked off the “Music from

Idina Menzel Relives Childhood Through Motherhood

Michael Becker/Fox/PictureGroup

With the birth of her first child Walker Nathaniel, now 16 months, Idina Menzel took a step back in time — and has been loving every minute of it.

“You get to relive your childhood when you have a baby and you see these toys and these books you read when you were little — the innocence that you are able to maintain … to connect with your child keeps you in a special state of mind,” the actress, 39, tells Broadway World.

Despite Menzel’s hectic schedule, special moments with her family — including husband Taye Diggs — remain her first priority.

Taye Diggs Doesn’t Worry About ‘Looking Cool’ for Daddy Duty

Michael Becker/Fox/PictureGroup

There is one area of expertise that actor Taye Diggs will never add to his resume: handy man!

Fortunately Diggs’ wife Idina Menzel has a way of making the first-time father feel useful around the house — especially when it comes to the couple’s 16-month-old son Walker Nathaniel.

“My wife never throws anything at me that I can’t handle,” Diggs, 40, tells Good Housekeeping.

“I’m very proud of putting together a simple plastic slide for Walker. I feel like the king of the world.”

And although he’s admittedly “not very handy around the house,

Ellen's Departure Doesn't Surprise 'American Idol' Experts

Close watchers of the show say they saw this 'difficult decision' coming.

Ellen DeGeneres was the first to admit that her first, and as it turns out, last, season on "American Idol" was not smooth sailing. In the statement announcing her departure from the show, the daytime talk queen and veteran comedienne copped to feeling uncomfortable criticizing young singers. "It was a difficult decision to make," DeGeneres said, "but my work schedule became more than I bargained for. I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings."

MTV News reached out to its panel of "Idol" experts for reaction on Friday (July 30), and each member said they were not shocked that DeGeneres pulled the ripcord on her three-year contract.

German National Football Team "A Bunch of Gays?"

German National Football Team takes third place at World Cup

A German sports agent named Michael Becker is making some interesting claims about the current lineup Germany's national football team.

Der Spiegel quotes him as claiming there's a "bunch of gays" in the new lineup and under the leadership of new head coach Joachim Löw there's some sort of gay conspiracy afoot.

Becker comes off as quite the patriarchal blowhard in this piece. He has an apparent axe to grind since his big client is the German team's injured captain Michael "the bulge" Ballack.

Michael Ballack

Ballack wasn't able to play at the World Cup, but that "bunch of gays" seemed to do quite well without him – securing a third-place finish. And that's not all, young player Thomas Muller got the World Cup's coveted Golden Boot award for most goals by an individual player. (For more on the World Cup generally,

Crystal Bowersox And The Amazing Metaphorical Dreamcoat

'American Idol' runner-up is determined to push the envelope even farther than Adam Lambert did, in Bigger Than the Sound.

By James Montgomery

Crystal Bowersox stood just off camera, looking slightly perturbed. A publicist tugged on the zipper of her brand-new leather jacket, a fashionably cut, butter-soft thing that had been given to her as a gift, presumably after finishing second on "American Idol." It was a very nice jacket. The problem was with the zipper.

"Man, you would think this thing would work better," Bowersox said to no one in particular, tugging on the tab, sticking her fingers in the metal teeth of the contraption. "If people want to give me nice stuff, that's cool. I'm going to Goodwill."

Ultimately, she and her publicist managed to force the zipper three-quarters of the way up the jacket, Bowersox smiled,

'American Idol' Experts Say Lee DeWyze Will Beat Crystal Bowersox

While Bowersox nailed the final performance night, there's no beating DeWyze's late surge.

It could be déjà vu all over again Wednesday night (May 26) on "American Idol." Like last season, when flashy Adam Lambert charmed the judges and audience with his operatic wails and wild outfits while workmanlike Kris Allen slowly gained steam in the final weeks, MTV News' "Idol" experts are predicting that this year's dark horse will pull out a win.

Even though season-long leader Crystal Bowersox pulled out a star-worthy three-pack of performances on Tuesday night's show as Lee DeWyze struggled at times with nerves, our "Idol" watchers think DeWyze might still pull out an upset.

"Crystal Bowersox mopped the Nokia stage with Lee DeWyze in every way possible," said Mj Santilli, webmaster of "Idol" fan site MJsBigBlog.com. "She out-sang him on a weekly basis,

Inside 'American Idol' Finale, Fans Urge Simon Cowell: 'Don't Go!'

'Idol' alumni Michael Lynche, Megan Joy and Justin Guarini show up for judge's penultimate show.

Los Angeles — The party got started long before the final "American Idol" performance show kicked off. "Idol" contestants from seasons past were right at home and accepted cheers and catcalling from the 7,000 fans inside the Nokia Theatre.

About an hour before the show started, season-one runner-up Justin Guarini held court. The curly-haired singer was outside near the talent check-in, taking cell phone shots with fans, shaking hands and laughing with friends he called out to.

Scott MacIntyre, the blind piano-playing contestant from season eight, was taken aback when the crowd whistled and applauded his arrival. Megan Joy — who got rid of the long, lush locks we remember from the same season — ran her fingers through her cropped

'American Idol' Finale: Crystal Bowersox And Lee DeWyze Face Off

While both got positive comments, Crystal appeared to outshine Lee.

After more than 40 shows, hundreds of contenders, almost as many broken hearts and one of the tamest set of finalists in the show's history, "American Idol" season nine came down to a pair of 24-year-olds, each vying to be the first Midwesterner to hold the crown.

Two days after the buzzed-about "Lost" finale, the second meanest man on TV this side of John "Smokey" Locke — departing original judge and the heart of the panel, Simon Cowell — went out not with his usual snarling put-downs, but with mostly kind remarks as Crystal Bowersox re-asserted her season-long status as the woman to beat with a pair of powerful performances that might have beaten back the late-season surge from rocker Lee DeWyze.

After Bowersox won last week's coin toss,

Idina Menzel Currently Living In a ‘Baby Zone’

Michael Becker/Fox/PictureGroup

Since welcoming her first child with husband Taye Diggs last fall, Idina Menzel‘s life has been turned upside down by son Walker Nathaniel.

“It’s a baby zone,” the actress tells USA Today of her New York City apartment.

Eight-month-old Walker’s gear is even visible on the set of Glee, where Menzel plays Vocal Adrenaline coach Shelby Corcoran.

“It’s tough because I’m still nursing,” she explains.

“In the trailer, I have my pump, and on breaks I had to go in and set up my human-cow situation and they’d call me back.

For now, the Will Arnett-Keri Russell series is perfect

For now, the Will Arnett-Keri Russell series is perfect
That's all that matters. For now! As Ausiello reported yesterday, Fox has picked up a comedy starring Will Arnett and Keri Russell called Running Wilde. Arrested Development mastermind Mitch Hurwitz is attached, so maybe it will be great. Or maybe it will be stupid. Maybe it will be "too smart for the lower common denominators who don’t get cerebral comedy, and thus canceled too early," as EW reader Kerri points out. And dear lord, if it has a laugh track? Forget it! Horror show! But Right Now, what's in my and likely many of your tunnel visions is that G.

Taylor Swift donated $500,000 to Nashville flood relief last week, and the country superstar is continuing to do her part by lending her talents to Nashville Rising: A Benefit Concert for Flood Recovery on June 22. The event will be hosted by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, with funds helping Nashville recover from last week's devastating floods.

Swift will be joined by fellow teen queen Miley Cyrus, as well as country stars like Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn, LeAnn Rimes, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride and more names to come, People reports. The June show is set to take place at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. Funds will go to the Community Foundation, which provides philanthropic services in Middle Tennessee.

“American Idol”: Last night’s lows, tonight’s Lady Gaga high

Tonight, the final five “American Idol” contestants will lower to the final four. But whoever the unlucky contestant who leaves tonight is, at least he will leave with Lady Gaga ringing in his ears.

Lady Gaga will perform her newest hit, “Alejandro” tonight, as she announced on Twitter earlier today. She says she’s dedicating the performance to her fans.

Last night’s “American Idol” received the lowest TV ratings since its first summer on the air in 2002, according to Nielsen overnights. We’re not saying that’s because of Casey James’ terrible rendition of “Blue Skies,” but it sure didn’t help. If we were the betting kind, we’d put our money on James to be the one to exit tonight.

Even judge Kara DioGuardi, who has been a fan of James throughout the competition, compared him to a bleating lamb. Ouch.

The Frank Sinatra-themed night didn

Tim Urban knows he was the butt of a lot of jokes this season, and the recently eliminated American Idol singer is Ok with that.

Urban, who was cut during Hollywood Week but brought back when another semifinalist was disqualified, says cynics and bloggers had their stories written for them before he even finished his first — as Simon Cowell would say, dreadful — performance.

"I feel like I created the perfect storm for Internet buzz," Urban tells TVGuide.com. "I was the alternate who went out the first week and just tanked it. ... I created a storyline right there at the start."

But Urban says it was the drive to change that storyline that helped him make it to the finals and all the way to a seventh-place finish ...

Crystal Bowersox says “no beef” with Ryan Seacrest

Crystal Bowersox is one of our top favorite “American Idol” contestants alongside Lee DeWyze. Not only do the two of them have unique voices and styles, but they continue to perform exceptionally well week after week. Simon Cowell said that DeWyze’s performance last night was “the best of the night,” and we couldn’t agree more. Last week we posted that Crystal Bowersox almost quit after a meltdown occurred in the parking lot. Luckily Ryan Seacrest was there to talk her back to the show, which only prompted Bowersox to claim that he betrayed her.

Now People has reported that during last night’s “American Idol” she stated that there is “no beef with me and Ryan. We were never angry with each other. We had a conversation. He gave me good advice and I highly respect him.”

It looks like she’s trying to put the situation out

Lee DeWyze kills “Inspirational” week on “American Idol”

This week on “American Idol,” the contestants had to sing “inspirational songs.” While some missed the mark completely, one who nailed it right on the head was Lee DeWyze. With his cover of “The Boxer” by Simon and Garfunkel, he stunned the audience and Simon said while it was early on, it was the “best performance of the night.” We couldn’t agree more.

Although Garcia wowed the judges during Hollywood Week with an acoustic cover of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up," he never seemed to find that same spark in his subsequent performances.
