French leading actor, popular in pre-World War II costume dramas. Arrested by the Gestapo in 1942, after attempting to forge papers showing him to be Aryan origin, hoping to fool German authorities into letting him star in a two million Reichsmark production, Symphonie eines Lebens (1943). After being jailed and tortured, he was eventually released but died mysteriously two days later. See more »
