Armed with the concept that “drag is something anybody can relate to because you get out of bed in the morning and you put on a look, you put on a uniform, you invent yourself,” Bailey says they pitched it around but had trouble finding a home for it.

‘Freak Show’ Trailer: Laverne Cox & Bette Midler Support a Gender-Bending Teen’s Run for Homecoming Queen (Exclusive)
Notorious club kid James St. James was canonized in the 2003 film “Party Monster,” which saw an adult Macaulay Culkin return to the screen for the first time since 1994’s “Richie Rich.” In his controversial comeback, based on St. James’ memoir and directed by “RuPaul’s Drag Race” producers Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, Culkin played a drug-addled party promoter who becomes embroiled in a murder. Fifteen years later comes “Freak Show,” which is based on the eponymous novel by St. James. “Freak Show” has a lighter take on a similar character, although not one without his demons.

From first-time feature director Trudie Styler, “Freak Show” releases its flashy first trailer today.

RuPaul is Heading to Sundance for a ‘Drag Race’ Retrospective, Cementing Icon Status Across Industries
RuPaul is heading to Park City this winter, and it’s not to shoot a special ski bunny episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” It’s an odd couple pairing for the indie film community and the person who brought drag into the mainstream more than once, proving that even the most devout cinephiles love their reality television — as long as it’s paired with a fabulous dash of biting satire. RuPaul has two Emmys for his role hosting “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” which he executive produces with Sundance regulars Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato of World of Wonder productions.

According to Deadline, RuPaul will host an official “Drag Race” retrospective to celebrate the show’s impact and commemorate its forthcoming tenth season. The event is being billed as, “RuPaul’s Drag Race: A Retrospective of the Cultural Phenomenon.” In addition to the panel, RuPaul will present the Next Innovator Award,
