A new viral site explains what's happened next for Will Smith's Captain Hiller in Independence Day....

This story contains spoilers for Independence Day: Resurgence

The recently unveiled Independence Day: Resurgence debut trailer seems to have gone down really rather well so far. And whilst the band is mostly back together as far as the cast is concerned, Will Smith has opted not to return, causing a rather intriguing storyline adjustment.

You can find out more after we've cunningly deployed Daphne The Spoiler Squirrel...

An official viral site promoting Independence Day: Resurgence called War of 1996 contains a rather potent tidbit regarding the fate of Smith’s memorable main character from the original Independence Day. Smith, of course, played Captain Steven Hiller in the first film. Yet it seems that, after a well-deserved promotion to Colonel, the man who essentially saved Earth met his end years later in a sadly anti-climactic way,

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Turns 25! Stars Reveal 5 Things You Didn't Know
It's time to hail the prince.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air turns 25 Thursday, with the first episode of the iconic sitcom airing Sept. 10, 1990 on NBC. The show would become one of the most enduring sitcoms of the '90s, but at the time it was a risk for star Will Smith, whose acting chops were unproven, and for NBC, which pitted the series against Monday Night Football.

The show soon found a ravenous audience – one that continues thanks to reruns, with fans still loving the story all about how a young man from Philadelphia shook up the lives of the Banks family.

New Photo Heralds The Arrival Of Jeff Goldblum On Independence Day 2

There was no real surprise when Independence Day 2 was announced. With the original 1996 movie having seen huge box office success, discussions about a possible sequel have rumbled on for years. Its twentieth anniversary year seems fitting, then, to finally revisit the story of a world uniting (behind America, obviously) against an extra-terrestrial threat. The surprises of the sequel lay in the casting announcements, however.

Independence Day featured an impressive ensemble cast – in the vein of the great disaster movies of a bygone era, such as The Towering Inferno or The Poseidon Adventure. Despite this, the plot really centred on two main characters – David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and Captain Steve Hiller (Will Smith). Ultimately, Levinson would couple his own technical expertise with the piloting talents of Hiller to save the world from annihilation by a hostile alien threat. The makers of Independence Day 2 quickly confirmed that, while Jeff Goldblum would be

'Independence Day 2' Targets 'Boardwalk Empire' Actor

'Independence Day 2' Targets 'Boardwalk Empire' Actor
Just one day after we reported that Independence Day star Vivica A. Fox will return for Independence Day 2, Boardwalk Empire actor Travis Tope is in negotiations to join the cast. The actor will play a character named Charlie, although no further details were given. Independence Day star Will Smith is not returning, although Bill Pullman (Thomas Whitmore) and Jeff Goldblum (David Levinson) are reprising their roles from the original, alongside Vivica A. Fox.

The new cast members coming on board for the sequel include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher and Charlotte Gainsbourg. When Jessie Usher was originally cast, it was revealed that he is playing the son of Will Smith's Stephen Hiller. However, The Wrap reports that he is actually playing Jasmine Dubrow's son Dylan, originally played by Ross Bagley in Independence Day. In the original movie, Hiller was dating Dubrow, but he was not the father of Dylan.

'Independence Day 2' Targets Charlotte Gainsbourg

'Independence Day 2' Targets Charlotte Gainsbourg
Charlotte Gainsbourg, who most recently starred in director Lars von Trier's controversial Nymphomaniac Volume I and Nymphomaniac Volume II, is in negotiations to join the cast of 20th Century Fox's sci-fi action sequel Independence Day 2. No details were given for her character, but if a deal is finalized, she will join Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth and Jeff Goldblum, who reprises his David Levinson role from 1996's Independence Day. While Will Smith is not returning as Air Force pilot Stephen Hiller for the follow-up, it is believed that Bill Pullman will be back as Thomas Whitmore.

We reported earlier this month that Jessie Usher is playing the son of Will Smith's Stephen Hiller, but in the original Independence Day, it was never revealed that Hiller had a son. His girlfriend, Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) did have a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley), but Hiller was not the father.

Horror / Sci-Fi Round-Up: Independence Day 2, Deep in the Darkness Blu-ray / DVD, Treachery

Welcome to another horror/sci-fi round-up! This time around we have word of two big cast confirmations for Independence Day 2, details on Scream Factory's Deep in the Darkness Blu-ray / DVD release, and information on the new Blanc/Biehn Productions film, Treachery.

Independence Day 2: Last night it was revealed that the first official cast member had signed on to star in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2, the sequel to his 1996 film that featured massive alien-induced destruction and larger-than-life characters. It's now been confirmed that one of those characters will be coming back, as Emmerich tweeted last night that Jeff Goldblum will appear in the sequel, likely reprising his role as the brainy and dryly humorous David Levinson, who teamed up with fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller to take down the mothership in the original film. Smith will not be coming back to reprise his role as Steven.

Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum and Jessie Usher Join 'Independence Day' Sequel

We don't quite know what Independence Day 2 will be about, but we do know Roland Emmerich is returning to direct and the film is set to hit theaters on June 24, 2016, almost exactly 20 years after the original made Will Smith a star and a little over one year after Focus told us that star status is fading. However, as for the film's plot, we are just now getting our first taste as we'll begin with THR's report that Jessie Usher ("Survivor's Remorse", When the Game Stands Tall) has been cast as a central character in the new film as the son of Smith's character from the original. There were reports there were two scripts for the film floating around, one if Smith decided to return as Captain Steven Hiller and another if he didn't. I can only now assume the only difference was whether or not it would be Smith's

Jessie Usher Joins Independence Day 2

When Independence Day exploded onto the big screen in 1996, it became a box office smash hit. Its effective mix of science fiction, ground-breaking special effects, and disaster movie themes turned it into the quintessential summer blockbuster, and paved the way for director Roland Emmerich to wage cinematic war on countless iconic landmarks in subsequent movies, such as Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and White House Down. Surprisingly, a sequel has been slow to develop – but the wait is almost over now, as finally, almost two decades later, Independence Day 2 is on its way – with Jessie Usher now cast.

Plot details are, of course, tightly under wraps, but we can surmise from the casting that a high level of continuity can be expected. Jeff Goldblum will apparently reprise his role as codebreaker and day saviour, David Levinson, and Jessie Usher is set to play the son of Will Smith’s Independence Day character,

Independence Day 2 Signs First Cast Member

Their massive bulks blocked out the sun and spread panic like a disease in the streets below. The sheer size of their ships made them seem like gods. The destroyer spacecrafts in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day carried more than just aliens, they also held an overwhelming sense of dread that was unleashed when they slowly erased the blue sky above, and we could see them return with an even more intimidating presence when Independence Day 2 hits theaters next summer. Though rumors on who will star in the sequel have been swirling around for a while, the first concrete casting news has now come in, as the lead actor has been revealed for Independence Day 2, with the cast member playing a role with close ties to the original film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jessie Usher (Survivor's Remorse) has been cast in a prominent role for Independence Day 2.

'Independence Day 2' Gets Jeff Goldblum & Liam Hemsworth

'Independence Day 2' Gets Jeff Goldblum & Liam Hemsworth
Director Roland Emmerich revealed on his personal Facebook page today that Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum and Jessie Usher have signed on for roles in Independence Day 2. Naturally, Jeff Goldblum will be reprising his role as David Levinson from the original 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, but the filmmaker would not say who the other actors are playing. However, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Jessie Usher will play the son of Will Smith's Captain Stephen Hiller from the original movie in a central role.

It's worth noting that, in the original Independence Day, Stephen Hiller's girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) had a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley), although Stephen was not the father. It's possible that Jessie Usher may be playing Dylan, 20 years later, since it wasn't known if Hiller had children or not. As for Liam Hemsworth, the actor was rumored to be up for the lead role back in January,

Artwork for horror movie Gnome Alone starring Verne Troyer

If long-time Leprechaun fans were upset with what Lionsgate and WWE Studios did with their gritty reboot of Leprechaun: Origins, then you may get your fix with Gnome Alone, which stars the former Mini Me, Verne Troyer.

Based on the title, we can only assume this will have the tongue in cheek humour of the original Leprechaun series. Check out the artwork and synopsis below:

“When timid college student Zoe witnesses a hit-and-run, the dying victim gives her a strange amulet. Suddenly, all those who have offended Zoe in her life begin dying horrible deaths at the hands of a malicious gnome (Troyer). When Zoe discovers the horrible history behind the amulet, will she be able to harness its magical power before the gnome begins killing those closest to her?”

And speaking of Leprechaun, original star Warwick Davis is teaming up with its original director Mark Jones to star in Vamprechaun.

Michael B. Jordan Eyed for a Major Role in Independence Day 2

  • MovieWeb
Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan has reportedly met with director Roland Emmerich for a major role in Independence Day 2. However, there is no offer out to the actor, nor is one expected to be issued, since the filmmaker is still meeting with other actors.

No details have been revealed in regards to what role Michael B. Jordan may be in contention for. However, it's possible that he may be playing Dylan Dubrow, the son of Vivica A. Fox's Jasmine Dubrow, originally played by Ross Bagley in the original 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. We reported in March that the sequel will take place 20 years after the original, which would make the 26-year-old actor just about the right age to play this character.

We reported last month that Will Smith is back in talks to return as Steven Hiller, although the actor's reps revealed that he is not officially involved at this time.
