John has over 100 stage, film, and television credits in his career that spans over 40 years. He has won critical acclaim for his work on such films as Beverly Hills Cop I and II, Midnight Run, Gone, Baby, Gone, and many others. He has also won the same for his stage work for True West and A Flea in Her Ear. John received his B.A. in Theater Arts from the University of Southern California, where he was also rewarded the Irene Ryan Scholarship. He toured Europe with the USA Festival Theater Tour in Germany, England, and at the prestigious Edinburgh Arts Festival.

While appearing with a touring theater troupe from USC, won scholarship to travel abroad in 1970 and appeared in 15 productions throughout Europe.
