East End Film Festival Movie Review – West of Sunshine (2018)

West of Sunshine, 2018

Directed by Jason Raftopoulos

Starring Damian Hill, Ty Perham, Arthur Angel, Kat Stewart, Faye Smythe

Synopsis:

Jim (Damian Hill) has been given a deadline to pay back a substantial debt to a dangerous loan shark or face the consequences. His escape plan consists of backing a race horse, borrowing off friends, and dodging phone calls, but he doesn’t take into account the fact it’s his day to look after his young son (Tyler Perham), a turn of events that puts both of them at risk.

With its tale of fallible nice guy struggling to do right by his family, this Antipodean drama drives the same roads as Scott Cooper’s Out of Furnace, and on a surface level even recalls Kevin Costner kid in a car crime caper A Perfect World, but despite some wonderfully shot sequences and decent performances, West of Sunshine drifts along

Venice Film Review: ‘West of Sunshine’

Venice Film Review: ‘West of Sunshine’
Fatherhood gets an incisive examination in “West of Sunshine,” the short, sharp and rewarding feature debut of Australian writer-director Jason Raftopoulos. Set during one day in the life of a working-class Melbourne dad who’s forced to cart his young son around town while scrambling to pay gambling debts to a loan shark, this compact piece of Aussie social realism will appeal to discerning audiences and could find a profitable niche in local art houses. A small-scale film that’s very well performed by lesser-known actors and some non-professionals, “West of Sunshine” faces a challenge to break through theatrically in overseas markets (and doesn’t yet have domestic release plans), though its exposure at the Venice film festival should attract fest attention at least.

At the outset, all that’s known about Jim (Damian Hill) is that he drives an immaculately maintained 1970s muscle car and works for a courier company. He

Snowtown duo reunites for historical epic

Snowtown director Justin Kurzel and screenwriter Shaun Grant are collaborating on an Australian bushranger feature.

Grant is writing True History of the Kelly Gang, adapted from the Peter Carey novel, a co-production between Porchlight.s Liz Watts and the UK's Daybreak Pictures.

The novel is seen through Kelly.s eyes, scribbling his narrative on scraps of paper in semi-literate but descriptive prose as he fled from the police.

To his pursuers, Kelly was a monstrous criminal, a thief and a murderer. To many ordinary Australians, the bushranger was a hero, defying the authority of the English to control their lives.

Joe Penhall was listed as the writer when the project received development funding from Screen Australia.

Heath Ledger played the bushranger in Gregor Jordan's Ned Kelly in 2003 and Mick Jagger starred in Tony Richardson's Ned Kelly in 1970. The first screen version was The Story of the Kelly Gang in

Encapsulated Cinema Goes Soft: Red Dog, Young Adult, and Inseparable

Red Dog (2011) Kriv Stenders’ “Red Dog” is supposedly based on a true story, but rather you believe it or not, I don’t suppose it matters. The film itself is good enough on its own that I didn’t bother to doubt the story’s authenticity. What matters is that “Red Dog” is one heck of a loveable tale about a stray dog in 1970s Australia, that somehow ends up the communal pet for a disparate group of miners working at some faraway, isolated town that can’t even be called a proper town. The film features an ensemble cast, but if you were to demand I pinpoint a star, I’d say it’s American Josh Lucas (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) as a world traveler who becomes Red Dog’s master. Though for my money, it’s John Batchelor as the burly on the outside but secretly soft on the
