Kevin Spacey and Kafka with cats: a closer look at Nine Lives

Ryan Lambie Apr 12, 2017

Kevin Spacey turns into a cat. Christopher Walken. We take a closer look at the Kafka-esque comedy, Nine Lives..

“When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from troubled dreams, he found himself changed into a monstrous cockroach in his bed.”

So goes the first line in Franz Kafka’s classic short story, Metamorphosis - a tiny, existential drama subject to all kinds of interpretations since its publication in 1915. Even that famous opening line is open to interpretation, as this Guardian piece points out: did Kafka really mean that poor, unfortunate Gregor woke up as a cockroach, another kind of insect, or something else entirely? The German phrase he uses, “Ungeheuren Ungeziefer” loosely translates to “enormous vermin.”

Whatever Gregor becomes, it’s something pitiful and helpless; he can no longer work, and gradually, he’s shunned by his own family.

Steven Seagal lost a 'Batman' bet and this is his most recent trailer
Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. My close, personal friend, screenwriter Matt Allen used to work for Steven Seagal when Matt was in college. Matt's Steven Seagal stories are incredible. One of my favorite ones is Matt and Steven Seagal were at lunch at Spago's. This was 1989, and a little movie called Batman was about to come out. Seagal was certain that Batman was going to flop because Seagal felt like he could destroy Michael Keaton with his pinkie toe, and no one would turn out to see a movie with a wimp like Micheal Keaton. In the year 2016, you might think Seagal's point of view is reasonable because 1989 is far from the era of super heroes we're in now. But you would be wrong. Back then, even if tracking isn't as sophisticated as it is now,

Behind the scenes: writing a talking cat movie
Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. Chances are, you've already made plans to see the Nine Lives movie with all your friends and family. For all I know, you're probably in line to see it right now. It has everything any movie needs. Giant buildings. Christopher Walken. Cats. And if that doesn't sell you, none of what I'm about to tell you will sell you either. Technically, I worked on this script. This would be news to anyone involved, and it really is a technicality. In the screenwriter profession, a lot of screenwriters — not all, but a lot — have their own writing groups amongst friends where we share what we are working on and give each other notes. In fact, sometimes we even go on retreats. Such was the case when my friends Matt Allen

Universal Buys Matt Allen & Chris Borrelli Action Comedy Pitch For Chris Morgan

Exclusive: In a pre-emptive mid-six- against seven-figure deal, Universal has acquired an untitled action comedy pitch for Chris Morgan Productions, I’ve learned. Matt Allen and Chris Borrelli will pen the script based on their pitch — whose logline is being kept tightly under wraps. However, I’m told by a person close to the project that it has the potential of becoming an action comedy tentpole. Both writers have a long relationship with Fast & Furious franchise writer Morgan. He’ll produce via his Universal-based banner.

Borrelli and Allen’s stars have been steadily rising. Borrelli recently collaborated with Morgan on Lionsgate’s The Vatican Tapes with Borrelli writing the script and the two producing alongside Chris Cowles and Lakeshore Entertainment. It hits theaters February 27.

Borrelli’s script Wake is starting production in February with John Pogue directing for Benaroya Pictures with Exclusive Media, Dmg, and Circle of Confusion producing. His

‘Soul Surfer’ Trailer

‘Soul Surfer’ Trailer
[1] Earlier this month, a in-house promotional teaser trailer leaked [2] for Soul Surfer, a drama about young, teenage surfer girl (played by Bridge To Terabithia/Race To Witch Mountain's AnnaSophia Robb) who "summons the courage to go back into the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack." When I posted the teaser, I was kind of weirded out that it contained no hint of a shark attack -- the teaser made it out like the film is just a happy-go-lucky story about a teenage girl surfer. The new full length trailer which has premiered on EW [3] (via FirstShowing [4]) gives audiences the full reveal of what this story is really about. That and a really cheesy speech from Carrie Underwood. Written and directed by Sean McNamara (Bring it On: Fight To The Finish, Into The Blue 2: The Reef, Bratz, 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain), the film co-starring Dennis Quaid,

Another Guidebook Adaptation: 'Eat, Sleep, Poop'

Two weeks ago, we heard news that a pregnancy guidebook, What to Expect When You're Expecting, is being turned into a film. In my response, I predicted that we'd also eventually get an adaptation of the book's sequel, What to Expect: The First Year. But now it seems someone will beat Lionsgate to the punch on that idea, because DreamWorks is already developing a movie based on a parenting guide.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio bought the rights to an upcoming book called Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby's First Year. The guide will be adapted by Four Christmases scribes Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson as a comedy (as opposed to a horror film, which some of us might presume it to be). And just so you know, this has some prestige attached: three-time Oscar-nominee Walter F. Parkes (Awakenings) is producing with Laurie MacDonald

Dreamworks Eats Poop

More proof that today is a poopy day when it comes to news, The Hollywood Reporter has the low down on Dreamworks aquiring the rights to Eat, Sleep, Poop which is a guidebook on babies or something like that.THR has more:DreamWorks has picked up the rights to "Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby's First Year" for producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald to adapt into a feature comedy. Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson, who penned the Vince Vaughn-Reese Witherspoon comedy "Four Christmases," are on board to write. "Poop" is a witty guidebook by Beverly Hills-based pediatrician Scott W. Cohen. Scribner is publishing the book March 30. The first book of a planned series is a common sense guide for parents with newborns. It also follows Cohen's experiences raising his own child, which in many ways defied much of what he learned in medical school

Dreamworks Will Show Viewers How to ‘Eat, Sleep, Poop’

I think I’m starting to notice a new trend in Hollywood. It’s not really a new trend, per se, because studios have been doing it for a really long time – but now it seems to be getting out of control. No, I’m not talking about video game movies, like Prince of Persia, Tekken or Asteroids. I’m also not referring to movies based on board games like Risk, Monopoly or Battleship. I know what you are thinking “Paul, surely you are referring to the ridiculous amount of remakes and reboots in the wings?”

No my friend, I’m not talking about future failures movie remakes like Weekend at Bernie’s, Mannequin, Short Circuit or Drop Dead Fred nor am I talking about ill-thought out reboots of the Cliffhanger, Nightmare on Elm Street or the Spider-Man franchises.

No, what I’m referring to is how Hollywood studios are

I hope this movie focuses on eating and sleeping

Sadly, the upcoming book Eat, Sleep, Poop is not a faux-self-help memoir penned by me, about living in New York during my Roarin' 20s. This is especially sad because the parenting book, which was written by Beverly Hills-based pediatrician Scott W. Cohen and won't be on stands until March 30, is going to become a movie. A Movie. DreamWorks has enlisted Matt Allen and Caleb Winston (Four Christmases) to write it. Quick, PoopWatchers, let's help them decide how much to focus on each of these three essential life activities. As a relentless night owl, I'd personally go Eat, Poop, Sleep, even

Dreamworks Knows How to Eat, Sleep, Poop

DreamWorks has successfully made a pre-emptive bid to secure the film rights to the book Eat, Sleep, Poop: A Common Sense Guide to Your Baby’s First Year, due out March 30 of this year. THR describes Poop as a “witty guidebook” authored by Beverly Hills-based pediatrician Scott W. Cohen. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce the film and have tapped Four Christmases scribes Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson as screenwriters.

Optioning Poop was a savvy move by DreamWorks because it is the first in a planned series of books about the joys and misadventures of child-rearing. Apart from the Look Who’s Talking trilogy, the baby genre is not known for sequels but this material should prove to be an exception. No word yet on whether or not the film will be 3D but considering the kind of excretory action it is sure to provide I would be surprised

DreamWorks to Show How Babies Eat, Sleep, Poop

Just two weeks ago, Lionsgate announced that they will be making a movie based on Heidi Murkoff's best-seller "What to Expect When You're Expecting." Matt Allen and Caleb Wilson, who wrote Four Christmases , will pen the script for the comedy, to be produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Here's how pediatrician Scott W.
