Phenomena is a substantially different movie depending on how you first saw it. Audiences in its native Italy were able to see the original 116-minute film as director Dario Argento intended for its initial release in 1985. That cut was pruned down to 110 minutes for international release. In America, however, New Line Cinema cut the picture to 83 minutes before putting it out under the title Creepers in 1986. Finding its audience in the VHS rental market, this was the only version available in the US until DVD came around.
Each version has its advantages and disadvantages. The original integral cut contains everything, but it drags a bit in the middle and there are a few moments that were never dubbed into English. The international version is a bit tighter, mostly trimming frames and sacrificing only a few lines of dialogue. Those who grew up with the Creepers cut may prefer its punchier pace,...

Years Of Lead: Five Classic Italian Crime Thrillers 1973-1977 will be available on Blu-ray June 22nd from Arrow Video. The titles are: Savage Three (1975), Like Rabid Dogs (1976),, Colt 38 Special Squad (1976), Highway Racer (1977) and Highway Racer (1977),
The 1970s were a time of intense uncertainty and instability in Italy. Political corruption and widespread acts of left and right-wing terrorism, alongside a breakdown in social cohesion and a loss of trust in public institutions such as the government and police, created a febrile atmosphere of cynicism, paranoia and unexploded rage. Throughout this period, these sentiments found expression in a series of brutal, often morally ambiguous crime thrillers which tapped into the atmosphere of violence and instability that defined the so-called Years of Lead.
This box set gathers five films from the heyday of the “poliziotteschi” – the umbrella term used to describe this diverse body of films. In Vittorio Salerno’s Savage Three (1975) and...

Sigourney Weaver updates the long-gestating project from James Cameron.
People have been talking about Avatar 2 (and 3, and 4, and 5…) since before James Cameron’s first installment was even released way back in 2009, but in the eight-year interval all we’ve really heard about the project are excuses and other stalling tactics. Things seemed to get a little more definitive about a year or so ago when Av2 was given a Christmas Day 2018 release date, but only a few months ago word came that the film likely wouldn’t make that date, as it hasn’t even started filming yet.
But now, according to Sigourney Weaver, one of the actors in the film, Cameron and crew are finally ready to start cameras rolling … in a few more months … probably.
At a recent screening Weaver was asked about the film and said the following:
We’re starting! We’re starting training, and we’re starting … hmm, I...

I have been a fan of the Italian giallo subgenre for 30 years since my initiation into it was precipitated by my first viewing of Creepers (1985), the severely cut version of Dario Argento’s Phenomena, my personal favorite film of his. Subsequent viewings of films by both Mr. Argento and his mentor, Mario Bava, as well as Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, Luigi Cozzi, and Michele Soavi solidified a love for the putrid and the fantastic, and anyone who has seen these movies knows how delightfully entertaining they are: off-kilter camera angles, ludicrous dialogue, and what writer Todd French referred to as “a maddening narrative looseness” are present in these films in a way that they are absent in other genres. There is just nothing like an Italian giallo film. With all of the mock horror films that have been made going back to 1981’s Student Bodies and the later,...

The tale of the “Three Mothers” started with Suspiria in 1977 is continued in Inferno, released in 1980. Rose Elliot, a young poet (Irene Miracle), discovers some strange things about the building she is living in and writes her brother Mark (Leigh McCloskey) to tell him about what she has uncovered. Once Rose goes missing, Mark comes to New York City to try and figure out what has happened to her.
Dario Argento’s follow up to Suspiria is a classic case of execution over concept. Like the film before it, Inferno has a very thin plot. But that’s not what these films are about. Whether it’s the weird guy who owns the bookstore next door, or the eccentric woman with the odd valet, Mark’s adventure of discovery, much like Suzy’s in Suspiria is what drives the “plot” forward.
Irene Miracle does what she can her small and limited role.
