Stephen Adly Guirgis is a writer and actor, known for The Get Down (2016), Synecdoche, New York (2008) and Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014).

His play, Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train performed at Donmar Warehouse, was nominated for a 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for BBC Award for Best New Play of 2002.

His play, "Between Riverside and Crazy" at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois was nominated for a 2016 Joseph Jefferson (Equity) Award for Large Play Production.
