When Rishi Kapoor Exposed The Dark Side Of Bollywood Awards, Slamming Them For Awarding Parineeti Chopra After Losing Weight & Asked: “Will They Give Me One For Gaining…” (Photo Credit – Instagram)
This roller-coaster journey of Rishi Kapoor and his bold and blunt attitude towards life has always attracted polarising reactions from around the crowd. Some liked him being the man he always was; some didn’t agree with the things he used to say. He once slammed award shows for ‘distributing’ the trophies without substance & merit.
Parineeti Chopra‘s transformation led her to win the Style Icon Of The Year award, and that didn’t really go down well with Rishi. On a broader level, he was ridiculing the nature of many award shows left. But, as with every other Rk news, it grabbed many eyeballs.
While conversing with DNA, Rishi Kapoor said, “I use trophies as doorstops in my home.

ChildrenDaisy said that she'd opened up about the rape now because of the increasing number of children who are pushed into the entertainment industry by their parents.Tnm Staff“The man who did this was supposed to be my guardian,” said Daisy Irani, a veteran actor who wowed audiences with her performances as a child in the 1950s. In a recent interview to Khalid Mohamed of Mumbai Mirror, the actor made a shocking revelation – she was raped by a man, supposedly her guardian, when she was shooting for Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke in Chennai. She was only six years old at the time. Daisy’s story reveals the dark underbelly of the lives of children thrust into glamour and fame very early on. What made her come forward with her story, sixty years after she was sexually assaulted, is the increased number of children who are now finding themselves pushed way too young into the limelight, thanks to reality shows, TV programmes and films. Daisy wants parents and guardians to be aware of the dangers such an industry poses to children and keep a protective eye on them. Daisy’s story Daisy, who made her last appearance in the Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Happy New Year, is by no means new to the film industry. She has been seen in a number of supporting roles in TV as well as films. The peak of her stardom perhaps was when she was a child actor in the 1950s, starring in iconic films like Naya Daur and Dhool Ka Phool. Daisy spoke about how her mother’s ambition of making her a star deprived her of her childhood and also left her vulnerable to sexual predators in the Hindi film industry. Nazar, the man who raped her when she was six, was related to singer Zohrabai Ambalewaali, she said. He committed the heinous crime in a hotel room in Chennai where Daisy was shooting for Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke. He then hit her with a belt and threatened to kill Daisy if she revealed the incident to anyone. Daisy believed him, and did not speak about what had happened for a long time. Her rapist is now dead. “Obviously, he had contacts in the film industry. My mother was hell-bent on making me a star,” Daisy said. After she made her debut with a Marathi film called Baby, ‘uncle Nazar’ accompanied her to Chennai for the shoot of another film. “I can recall the incident only in flashes, but I do remember the killing pain, and the visual of him belting me. The next morning, I was back at the studio as if nothing had happened,” she said. Her mother’s ambition for making Daisy a star went well into her teen years. In another instance, when Daisy was 15, she was made to ‘pad up’ with a new-fangled sponge, and left alone with producer Mallikchand Kochar, who was planning a film called Mere Huzoor. Mallikchand sat with Daisy on the sofa and allegedly started touching her. “I knew what was on his mind,” she recounts. And then, she took out the sponge and handed it to him. Mallikchand was furious. “Now why did I do that? Because, I’ve always seen the funnier side of things,” Daisy remarked. When asked if the sexual assault affected her psychologically, Daisy said that as she grew up, she became “outrageously” flirtatious. She did not understand what she was doing at the time. It also made her protective of younger sisters Honey Irani (Farhan and Zoya Akhtar’s mother) and Meneka (Farah and Sajid Khan’s mother) when they were made to enter films by their mother. “Child actors have it tough. In a majority of cases they have been taken advantage of. Maybe a few have had it easy, but most don’t, really,” Daisy said. Not all glamour and fun for child artistes Daisy’s story is just one among the many of Indian child prodigies who are pushed into the limelight for their talents, way too early. Gita Aravamudan wrote for Firstpost that children forced into the “hard and unforgiving glare” of the limelight by ambitious parents, may learn to survive in the industry, but it comes with a price. Gita recounts the many child prodigies – singers, dancers, actors – she has seen and interviewed during her career and what she observed. The first she saw was Ravi Kiran, who came from a family of renowned musicians and gave his first performance at the age of two in 1969. While he not only survived, but thrived under the limelight, others are not as fortunate. For instance, Shakuntala Devi, India’s mathematical genius and prodigy, spoke about “wandering across the world as an exhibit”. She earned money, but had no control over it, and it was used by her father to put food on the table for the family. Growing up, Shakuntala desired anonymity and resented her childhood lost to the exploitation of her talent. Another example is Sarita Devi, Kamal Haasan’s ex-wife, who talked about running away from home to escape her exploitative mother. Then 21, she reportedly slept in a car for six days because she did not have anywhere to go. Like many child artistes, going to school was a luxury she was denied. “Fame and money make for a heady combination, and ambitious parents care little about how if affects their wards,” Gita wrote. Reality TV and children It is increasingly easy for children to become prey to predators from the show business, thanks to the number of reality shows which have come up – both on TV and online. To give you an example, Tnm’s Priyanka Thirumurthy had earlier reported on Kutty Chutties, a reality TV show which started in 2013. “The show's participants are between the ages of three and six. It aims to extract laughs from its audience through ignorant statements made by these children. The first episode started off with a child telling the audience that his father regularly beats his mother, even as the watching adults chuckled uncontrollably. The host then asked this boy who his girlfriend is and he pointed at a young woman in the crowd, who looks visibly embarrassed,” Priyanka wrote. “The children talk too much and broach subjects that are not age-appropriate. At every age, there is a certain level of physical, emotional and social growth expected from a child. This cannot be violated constantly," Dr Jayanthini, a Chennai-based psychiatrist, had told Tnm. In July last year, Bollywood director-producer Shoojit Sarkar had asked for such shows to be banned for their exploitative nature. Yesteryears' screen queen Asha Parekh is the latest to join the growing gallery of Bollywood icons who are subjects of books on their lives. While books on Shatrughan Sinha (written by journalist Bharati S Pradhan), Shammi Kapoor (written by veteran journalist Rauf Ahmed) and Shashi Kapoor (written by Us-based critic and journalist Aseem Chabria) have already hit the stands, some of other biographical subjects on the anvil are Kamal Haasan, Rishi Kapoor, Asha Bhosle, Shabana Azmi, Waheeda Rehman and Pran. The latest Bollywood icon to join the biographic brigade is Asha Parekh whose success ratio in the 1960s and early 70s is rivalled by none of her female colleagues. Disarmingly unassuming and loathe to tom-tom her achievements, Asha Parekh laughs in embarrassment about her stardom. "Yes, there were many successful films. God was kind. I was labelled the 'Jubilee Girl' because of the number of golden and silver jubilees. When...

Last week, we had two completely opposite filmmakers talking about the industry and its perceptions and once again this weekend, Karan Johar brings to the couch yet another family. While Anil Kapoor talked about his days and the industry today, Sonam Kapoor was as honest as she always is on this show, in spite of getting into trouble in the earlier season. The episode seems to be the right balance of sweet and spicy, which leaves us to decide for ourselves when the episode airs on Sunday at 9pm on Star World.
Snippets from the episode:
Karan: Does it bother you when you are not labelled as one of the lead actors, performance wise? As in you are getting there…but you are a superstar also, you have that image and vibe, you walk tall like one but does it bother you when they talk about other actors more in the acting department?...

India's most accomplished actor is ready with his autobiography. That Naseeruddin Shah has written his life-story out is no surprise. After all, life and career more worthy of chronicling is hard to come by. What surprises is that the Naseer story was kept under wraps for nearly four years as the actor-extraordinaire diligently penned down his thoughts and observations. Confirming the publication of his autobiography, Naseeruddin Shah says, "Yes, I've written my autobiography. I haven't spoken about it to anyone. I wanted to complete before talking about it." As one eagerly awaits the opus, Naseer reveals that it covers the first 32 years of his life. "That's as far as I'd like to take my life in the autobiography without the narration getting too lengthy to hold my readers. Insha Allah, there will be a second volume covering the second part of my life." Naseer's autobiography is expected to be out this year.

When Ashok Mehta passed away suddenly on August 15, he left behind a gorgeous legacy. Film critic Khalid Mohamed was been busy piecing together the complicated pieces of Mehta's accomplishment in a documentary when the cinematographer passed away.
And now, when Mehta is gone and the documentary remains unfinished, Farah Khan who is closely associated with the project, is more determined than ever to make sure the documentary is released.
Speaking about her involvement with this ambitious documentary, Farah says, "It started off simply enough when Khalid Mohamed told me he was making a documentary on Ashok Mehta. Since I knew Ashok very closely, he suggested I interview him for the documentary. I happily trudged to Ashok's home to spend one evening with him. Little did I know that was just the beginning."
That one enlightening session with Ashok turned for Farah into a preamble for many such sessions spent with the man who re-defined cinematography.

Farah Khan can't believe she has been handpicked as one of the 100 most promising emerging new directorial talent in the world in a film anthology entitled Take 100: The Future Of Film 100 New Directors. It's such an honour because I'm the only Indian director among the 100 who have been chosen. " Farah's happiness is manifold. "It's not a small thing because the directors have been chosen by the ten well-known film-festival directors from across the world. Cameron Bailey of the Toronto Film Festival selected my film Om Shanti Om." The best compliment that Farah got for this singular honour came from Karan Johar.

In a new story for tablet app The Atavist, writer David Wolman explores just how important social media really was to the Egyptian uprising. Here's an early look.
In March 2008, a young would-be civil engineer named Ahmed Maher created a Facebook page called April 6 Youth with a woman named Issra Abdel-Fattah. Their goal was to support a workers' strike in the Nile River Delta--and to find out if a digital movement could bolster real-life action. In three weeks, the April 6 Youth Facebook group gained 70,000 people. The otherwise barely noticeable strike became a riot, a media event, and an embarrassment to the regime of Hosni Mubarak.
The Facebook group would become an undeniable factor in a movement that helped unseat Mubarak. But as writer David Wolman writes in "The Instigators," the latest offering from longform journalism publication The Atavist (available via smartphone, tablets, and e-readers soon--as a Kindle Single now), the...

<div style="text-align: justify;">For the rarified select gathering, it was meant to be a cozy evening with close friends from the film fraternity to celebrate the release of Kurbaan last week. A special preview, hosted by socialite Kajal Anand, thus comprised the Who's Who of tinsel town and the usual sprinkling of society divas and dudes. But as the evening panned out, guests, comprising socialites and Bollywood movers and shakers, were shocked with what seemed to be a comedy of errors, gone horribly wrong.Film critic Khalid Mohamed and socialite Kajal Anand had a very public falling-out at this private screening of the film starring Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan.It all started like this: a socialite at the evening approached famed film critic Khalid Mohamed, but made the mistake of assuming him to be someone else. She then, on realising her faux pas, supposedly apologised for this. An eyewitness claims that Mohamed replied with,...

Rajneesh Duggal who is only one film old seems to already have a career that is shining brightly in the horizon. The actor who was introduced in Vikram Bhatt's 1920 impressed both audiences and critics thoroughly and more so impressed his director Vikram Bhatt. So much so, that he is now repeating him and his co-star of 1920 Adah Sharma in his next venture Phhirr. However, that's not where Vikram Bhatt's stops in flaunting his latest find. The director who's known to contribute quite interesting ventures to the industry is now all set to produce a Khalid Mohammad venture.
Khalid Mohammad himself is the focus of this venture as the film is an autobiographical venture titled Rutbaa. In particular the film is to focus on his relationship with his extrovert half brother, to be essayed by TV actor Viput Gupta, who was quite opposite to Khalid who was more of shy,...
