Prior to entering acting, Leroy served as a paratrooper in the French Foreign Legion, and fought in the First Indochina War and the Algerian War. He retired as a Captain in 1960, and won several decorations including the Legion of Honor, the Cross for Military Valor, and the War Cross for Foreign Operational Theatres.
