“Namaste England Has A Pure Heart” A Subhash K Jha Review

Namaste England

Starring Arjun Kapoor,Parineeti Chopra,Aditya Seal,Alankrita Sahay

Directed by Vipul Amritlal Shah

Vipul Shah likes to come clean. His movies are straightforward simple and aimed at the heart. Namaste England is no exception. It bears a strong thematic resemblance to Vipul’ s Namaste London that came 11 years ago. In both , the desi Punjabi son-of-the-soil hero makes it his business to bring his London-based wife back to her roots, and her senses.

This image of the hotheaded, impetuous, somewhat selfish heroine suited Katrina Kaif’s haughty personality in the earlier film. Parineeti Chopra is way too homely to look convincing in her Londoner’s avatar. In a way that suits the plot’s purposes, as the image of the desi girl hellbent on acquiring a British residency acquires a sense of ironic wistfulness in Parineeti’s tangy personality.

Param, her pure-hearted husband is played by Arjun Kapoor with an all-heart earnestness.

‘#O Premave’ review: This Kannada romance is an excruciating mess of sexist clichés

SandalwoodIt is just one more film that sees women as gold-diggers and urges them to look past material trappings and see the ‘true dedication’ of men.Rakesh MeharYoutube/ScreenshotYou would think that in 2018, with gender a hot topic of discussion all around the world, at least the worst stereotypes about men and women might disappear from Kannada cinema. Unfortunately, while love letters may have given way to WhatsApp messages and Facebook, the clichés from the 1980s refuse to go away. The latest egregious example of this tendency is #O Premave. Directed by and starring Manoj Kumar, #O Premave is just one more film that sees women as gold-diggers and urges them to look past material trappings and see the ‘true dedication’ of the men who love them. So you have Nikki Galrani, playing a middle-class girl who spends most of her time shopping and checking out fancy cars and whose ambition seems to be to marry rich. When she lays eyes on Manoj, who drives around a new expensive car every time, it’s nearly love at first sight. But all is not well in this cardboard-thin romance, since it eventually transpires that our hero doesn’t own any of these cars but only deals in them. Naturally, Nikki’s character, who admits she fell in love with our hero only after seeing him step out of an Audi or some other luxury car, feels cheated and breaks off the romance. All of the inevitable declamations follow about the calculating and materialistic nature of women and the loyal nature of men. For good measure, there’s also an Men’s Rights Activist aside about how there’s no one to support men when they’ve been wronged, while there are plenty of groups for women. From here, the film takes many unnecessary twists and turns before finally coming to what is probably supposed to be a happy ending. As if this weren’t enough, there are also a couple of racist jokes involving a dark-skinned supporting actor, and a reference to another obese actor as ‘elephant body’. And, of course, a cameo by Huccha Venkat that slut-shames women for wearing short dresses and straying from the path of Indian culture. The film is plotted as unthinkingly as the main storyline is written. So, there is a completely unnecessary comedy track involving Sadhu Kokila and a handful of entirely predictable fights and songs. In fact, the film is plotted in such a formulaic manner that, at the interval, it introduces a bizarre suspense scene completely unconnected to the film’s storyline just to fit the masala film standard. If you thought the acting performances might save the day, there’s not much hope for it. Manoj Kumar looks awkward and uncomfortable throughout the film, like he doesn’t know where the scene is going next. Nikki would be a little more tolerable if she weren’t reduced to so many needless tears in the film. Apoorva, who plays a second love interest to Manoj, is too wooden to be relatable. At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a well-crafted romance with relatable characters, #O Premave is not it. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

Rangoon is a simple tale, unnecessarily complicated by its characters’ prevarications – Subhash K Jha reviews Rangoon

Starring Shahid Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan

Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj

In art, as in life, consistency is not a quality that is easily obtainable. In the life that is created in Vishal Bhardwaj’s art the characters are so flawed and fractured and so driven down to destruction by their own demoniacal desires that you fear they would collapse under the weight of their own ambitions and longings.

This is true as much of the characters as the director himself. Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest arguably his most ambitious film to date could have ended up being the Bombay Velvet/Mohenjo Daro of 2017. It is rescued, no redeemed, by an excruciatingly exquisite perception of the wounds and lashes that love pelts down on those who are its victims.

Rangoon is a simple tale, unnecessarily complicated by its characters’ prevarications. It is a story pinned down to a bobbing blueprint

Imran Khan rejected by top leading ladies

Imran Khan rejected by top leading ladies
Imran Khan has told his close friends he was short-changed by his leading ladies when he was down and out. According to the forever-forthright actor, after his three back-to-back flops in 2012-13 no leading lady was willing to work with him in Katti Batti. While director Nikhil Advani wouldn't comment on the matter a source close to the project spilled the beans. "It is true. Nikhil approached several of the top actresses including Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone. They all said no to Imran, but yes to the film. They all wanted Nikhil to replace Imran Khan which he refused to do." Kangna Ranaut apparently loved her role and had no problems with Imran Khan as a co-star. Pahlaj Nihalani releases his Independence Day song

Chairperson of the censor board Pahlaj Nihalani is all set to release his song dedicated to the prime minister for Independence Day tomorrow.

The song entitled 'Mera Desh Hai Mahaan Mera Desh Hai Jawaan' is Nihalani's homage to a nation that has grown up on songs about leaders who have changed the way we look at our country.

Says Nihalani, "We don't have good patriotic songs. Because the young don't have that many political leaders to look up to. There was a time when Manoj Kumar Saab's films had great patriotic songs like 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti' and 'Hai Preet Jahaan Ki Reet Sadaa'. After the 1970s, the nation lost hope in its leaders. There are no patriotic songs anymore because the sense of patriotism is gone from our youngsters' lives."

Nihalani recalls a rare desh-bhakti song in a film post the 1970s. "It was beautiful patriotic song 'Aankhen Jiski
