Ana Gasteyer on Moving From the Groundlings Troupe to ‘Saturday Night Live’

After getting her start training with the Los Angeles improv-sketch group the Groundlings in the ’90s, Ana Gasteyer booked guest roles on quintessential sitcoms of the decade, including “Seinfeld” (in the infamous 1995 episode “The Soup Nazi”), “Mad About You” and “Just Shoot Me!” In 1996, she joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live,” creating iconic characters that included low-key NPR host Margaret Jo McCullen and impressions of personalities like Martha Stewart and Joan Rivers. She has continued to show off her comedy chops on such programs as “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “Suburgatory” and “The Goldbergs,” and is now starring in the TBS sitcom “People of Earth” as well as appearing opposite Maria Bamford in the offbeat Netflix comedy “Lady Dynamite.”

Gasteyer was first mentioned in Variety on Sept. 5, 1996, for joining the “SNL” cast.

The 20 Best TV Spin-off Series of All Time, Ranked
The early success of CBS’ new “The Big Bang Theory” prequel “Young Sheldon” is a reminder that often the most successful spin-offs look or feel completely different from their mother ship. “The Simpsons” was nothing like “The Tracey Ullman Show.” “Mork and Mindy” was set in a different time frame than “Happy Days.” And “Maude,” “The Jeffersons” and “Good Times” featured characters with a completely different mindset from “All in the Family’s” Archie Bunker.

Try as TV executives and creators might, it’s nearly impossible to replicate success in the same world or with many of the same characters. (Looking at you, “Joey” and “AfterMASH.”) Some of the best TV spinoffs succeed specifically because they approach a familiar template from a completely different angle. Spin-offs come in many forms: Some are continuations of series that have ended. Others follow popular characters on their own journeys. And some are simply planted into a hit show,

Exclusive: James Tupper on Mastering Mystery With Hallmark and 'Big Little Lies'
James Tupper's got a knack for mystery.

The 51-year-old actor, who gained notoriety on medical dramas like Mercy and Grey's Anatomy, seems to have hit his stride in the mystery genre with roles in Revenge and Big Little Lies.

Watch: James Tupper's Two Week Rule

Most recently, however, Tupper has transitioned from covering up crimes to solving them, with his latest role as an FBI agent working with an archaeologist (Courtney Thorne-Smith) to solve a murder in Hallmark Movies & Mysteries' Site Unseen: An Emma Fielding Mystery.

"I think Hallmark is doing this really exciting thing right now, where they buy a series of books, they're books for young adults, or adolescents, and they're really fun Agatha Christie-style mysteries," the Canadian actor excitedly told Et over the phone earlier this month. "I actually signed on for three of them."

Though Site Unseen has yet to premiere, Tupper said he hopes to work on the next

Hulu’s Best TV Shows About Women Beyond ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ That You Can Stream Right Now

Hulu’s Best TV Shows About Women Beyond ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ That You Can Stream Right Now
If you haven’t taken advantage of all that Hulu has to offer lately besides “The Handmaid’s Tale” – which everybody should really, really watch right now – then you’re missing out.

“The Handmaid’s Tale’ has been a groundbreaking series for the streaming service, thanks to its foreboding story about a near future in which a portion of the United States has been turned into a theocracy. This new world of Gilead subjugates women and makes the fertile ones become breeders for high-ranking officials. Moving performances by Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, Yvonne Strahovski, O-t Fagbenle and Alexis Bledel have made this series a must-watch.

Not only does Hulu have strong original programming like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” but it is one of the best places to watch shows that are currently on TV now, which makes cord-cutting that much easier. It also has an impressive catalog of past shows that are well worth revisiting.

The Best TV Guest Stars Ever — IndieWire Critics Survey

The Best TV Guest Stars Ever — IndieWire Critics Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: Who has been the best guest star on a scripted show?

Tim Surette (@timsurette), TV.com

Wayne Brady showing up in body armor and riding a horse on Syfy’s post-apocalyptic disaster disaster “Aftermath” needs to be mentioned somewhere in this critics’ roundup, so here it is. But I’ll point out two from intentional comedies that come to mind. Timothy Olyphant’s short run on “The Grinder” as himself was fantastic and if I didn’t mention this my coworker Kaitlin would kill me. But my pick goes to David Duchovny, also as himself, on “The Larry Sanders Show.” We’d largely known Duchovny for

From VHS to VOD #1

I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.

Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

The subversive messages snuck into Melrose Place

For 2 years in the 1990s, an art group snuck props containing hidden political messages into Fox’s glamorous soap, Melrose Place

When it comes to matters of morality and ethics, Us TV Networks are notoriously strict on what their shows may or may not depict. Remember the episode of Friends in which Rachel and Monica fight over the apartment’s last condom? After the fuss following Seinfeld’s condom episode, NBC stopped the creators from showing an actual condom wrapper, hence the use of a generic box.

The same went for A Different World episode Time Keeps On Slippin, when Producer-Director Debbie Allen was forced to have a character point to a handbag rather than show a packaged condom.

A similar stringent attitude applies to alcohol and drug references. In The Italian Bob episode of The Simpsons when Lisa gets drunk, Fox banned producers from showing her
