Tribeca Film Review: ‘The American Meme’

  • Variety
We all know people who think they’re tuned in but still have a way of raising high-minded objections to the popular culture they didn’t happen to grow up with. They’re the ones who said, back in the ’90s, that Howard Stern isn’t funny or Hip-hop isn’t music or How could anyone watch reality TV? It’s all fake! So if you gawk with bewilderment, and a touch of horrified awe, at the brave new world of social-media exhibitionists who preen and flounce through the brutally arresting documentary “The American Meme,” you may leave yourself open to the same accusation: that you have somehow failed to grasp the appeal of these people because, to put it simply, you’re too old.

Actually, though, there’s a key difference. “The American Meme” is a movie I very much recommend, since it’s both highly entertaining and an

Artie Lange Shreds Aziz Ansari and Louis Ck Over Sexual Misconduct Claims
Artie Lange might have his own personal issues to grapple with, but a history of sexual misconduct is apparently not one of them — and he has little to no sympathy for his colleagues in the comedy world who have been accused of inappropriate behavior. In an interview with The Daily Beast published Tuesday, Howard Stern alum Lange tore into “Master of None” star Aziz Ansari and “Louie” star Louis C.K., who have recently faced accusations of sexual untoward behavior. “Aziz ‘I’m sorry’ is a better name,” Lange said of the “Master of None” star, who earlier this month was accused...

‘Crashing’ Season 2 Review: Pete Holmes Loses His Faith and Finds Fresh Material in an Improved Stand-Up Story

‘Crashing’ Season 2 Review: Pete Holmes Loses His Faith and Finds Fresh Material in an Improved Stand-Up Story
One of the most glaring issues with “Crashing” Season 1 was how it acknowledged Pete Holmes’ unique background — that he’s a relatively clean comic thanks to his religious upbringing — without ever doing anything special with it. While a perfectly enjoyable season of television that set up its basic premise a little too well, Holmes’ initial HBO offering felt like any other stand-up comic’s story. Season 2 does not. It feels like Holmes’ story, and it’s better for it — in part because it fully commits to how belief can distinguish a comedian when he or she engages with the concept.

One of the easiest ways to explain away that nagging little existential quandary, “What is the meaning of life?” is to respond with, “Laughter.” “A good time.” “Being happy.” Those are the answers people come back to, time and time again, to the totally insignificant and definitely not nightmare-inducing question you,
