VH1 Divas Live at 20: A Look Back at the Major Music Moment That Almost Never Happened

Gloria. Shania. Celine. Mariah. Aretha. No, we're not announcing our nominations for America's Mount Rushmore of Music—although, all we can think about now is who we have to petition to make this happen. As music fans of a certain generation will certainly recall, these five legends, no last names needed, were the trailblazers that VH1 called upon when launching their most cherished live music franchise, VH1 Divas. Twenty years ago this month at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, Shania Twain, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin came together like some sort of musical Avengers to deliver a live concert the likes of which had never really been seen on TV. And it was one that...

The 68-year-old admits his goal was to be a musician. "The first real jobs I got out of college were playing weddings, bar mitzvahs, topless clubs — anything available! Then on a fluke, I was hired to conduct Godspell [in Toronto in 1972] with some of the funniest people I've ever worked with. Many remain my good friends today, including Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, and Victor Garber." And that's how he ended up in comedy. "We hung out incessantly and tried to make each other laugh nonstop. I was influenced profoundly by them — they seemed like they were having a better time than anybody I knew. They looked at everything through a comedic prism, and I started doing the same." Paul tells Closer. He landed SNL when Howard Shore,

Film Review: ‘America’s Musical Journey’

An infomercial is, by definition, a slightly creepy Orwellian thing. It’s a commercial that plays a bait-and-switch game with you, pretending to offer “information” when it’s really skewing information to sell you something. So what do you call an infomercial that pretends not to be an infomercial?

In the case of “America’s Musical Journey,” you could call it a distinctly inferior 3D IMAX film, an oversize tease of a sonic-adventure documentary that leaves you hollow rather than bedazzled. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, who comes off here less as The Voice of God than as The Voice of He Who Will Read Whatever Is Put in Front of Him, the movie presents itself as an enraptured tale of American musical roots — which, admittedly, is quite a thing to try to squeeze into 40 minutes of gargantuan-screen time.

Over the years, though, there have been 45-minute IMAX films about a variety of subjects (dinosaurs, tornadoes, the ruins

Nipplegate Revisited: How Justin Timberlake’s Previous Super Bowl Performance Rocked the World and Changed the Internet

Nipplegate Revisited: How Justin Timberlake’s Previous Super Bowl Performance Rocked the World and Changed the Internet
For years after the 2004 Super Bowl performance by Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson scandalized the world, the halftime pageant’s producers lived in terror of going near anything that could be considered filth. So it’s a measure of how far we’ve come that Justin Timberlake will presumably be singing his current hit, “Filth,” as part of Super Bowl Lii. Fourteen years was enough to ensure the 50-yard line was no longer toxic for the superstar, who’ll be bringing sexy back but leaving nipple shields in their place in history.

In the days following “Nipplegate” — in which Timberlake tore off a piece of Jackson’s jacket, accidentally revealing her mostly bare breast, under mysterious circumstances that are debated by conspiracy theorists to this day — there looked to be damage to her career, damage to his career, and a crackdown on sexual leniency on TV. But only the first of those came true, as Jackson

In a year when women in Hollywood and beyond are taking a united stand against abuse, the gender wage gap, and the casting couch, actress-singer Thalia Sodi says the new HBO documentary she co-directed about five teen Latinas reaching milestone birthdays is one way to look at the real America from an empowering female perspective.

“We started working on ‘Quinceañera’ more than two years ago and never expected the political climate to be where it’s at right now for the country,” says the Mexican-born entertainer, who created the project with husband Tommy Mottola, an executive producer on the film. “These stories illustrate the reality of America through five young girls about to turn 15. They are the future and it’s important to show these stories.”

The documentary, which debuts Tuesday night, follows five teenagers including Zoey Luna, who was assigned male at birth; Rosi Alvarez, who decides to travel to Cuba for her celebration; Ashley Lopez (pictured
