For a second consecutive year, top honors at Mexico’s Fénix Film Awards were reserved for a Chilean film. Sebastián Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman,” took home best picture after starting the evening as the heavy favorite, having previously dazzled at festivals like Berlinale, San Sebastián and last month’s Mar del Plata. Lelio also won best director while leading lady Daniela Vega took best actress, her first major award in a budding career.

A Monster Calls,” the most commercially successful film in attendance, earned further critical praise for its aesthetics, collecting trophies for best sound and art design. This was the first year in which audiences voted for an Exhibitors Award, which also went to “A Monster Calls” and its Spanish director J.A. Bayona.

The Mica market will be playing catch-up with larger Latin American markets like Ventana Sur for some time, but it looks set to prove an arresting display for the rapidly growing gallery of higher end TV projects produced by top production companies in Mexico and aimed at international co-production partners or distribution. At one in the same time, this year’s Mica market attests to the strength of Mexico’s modern documentary tradition and to the spiraling presence of women in its industry and lead creative roles.

Morelia: Mexico’s Fénix Ibero-American Film Awards Announces Winners and Nominees

Morelia, Mexico — At this year’s 15th Morelia International Film Festival, Cinema23 – a platform dedicated to the promotion of film culture in the 22 countries of Latin America plus Spain, Portugal and those that work closely with them – announced the nominees and winners of three awards to be given on Dec. 6 at Mexico’s Fénix Ibero-American Film Awards, to be held in Mexico City at the Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris.

In addition to press and industry professionals, Monday’s press conference at the Nespresso Atelier was attended by Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Batel, vice president of Mexico’s Morelia Festival; Rodrigo Peñafiel, president of the Fénix Awards; Miguel Mier, Global COO of Cinépolis; and Ernesto Contreras, filmmaker and president-elect of the Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Amacc).

Nominations for this year’s awards were pre-selected from a pool of 800 titles.

Nobody could accuse Argentina’s Adrian Suar of not leading from the front. The most-prolific high-level multi-tasker in Latin America’s film-tv business, Suar is set to star in the upcoming movie “Futbol o yo,” produced by the Disney-backed Patagonik Film Group, as he advances on a full roster of TV series at Pol-ka Producciones, the TV production house he co-owns with Argentine broadcaster Artear.

A romantic comedy, “Futbol o yo” has gone into production as Suar, who also serves as program director for Artear-El Trece, the flagship free’to’air channel of media conglom Clarin Group, is helping to steer the top Argentine TV network fully into a digital age.

Laura Casabe’s dramedy-thriller “Benavidez’s Case” and Sebastian and Federico Rotstein’s horror pic “Terror 5” won two prizes a piece at Blood Window’s third Bloody Works in Progress edition in Ventana Sur.

Produced by Magali Nieva Umansky at Ninja Films Argentina, and toplining Norma Aleandro, “Benavidez’s Case” won a color correction award plus VFX supervision granted by Mexican production house Sofia Films.

“Benavidez’s Case” also snagged opening credits design and a basic pay TV distribution deal for Latin America from Mexico’s Morbido Film Festival.

Produced by Argentina’s Camargo Cine, Sebastian Perillo and Werner Cine, “Terror 5” snagged concept graphic poster design service, also from the Morbido Fest, plus a plaudit from Argentina’s Full Dimensional Award, consisting of a teaser post-pro work and 3D conversion plus five work days of 7.1 sound mixing, Foley and Dcp conversion.

Costa-Gavras has been named guest of honour at this year’s Cannes Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24).

The Greek-French film director and producer won the Palme d’or with Missing in 1982, was member of the jury in 1976 that crowned Taxi Driver and picked up the award for best director with Section spéciale in 1975.

The filmmaker will be present for a screening of Z, which won the jury prize in 1969, and has had the original negative scanned in 4k and restored frame by frame in 2K, supervised by Costa-Gavras.

Orson Welles

Marking 100 years since the birth of Orson Welles, Cannes will screen restorations of films from the legendary Us actor, director, writer and producer, who died in 1985.

Julianne Moore, Far from Heaven For decades, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards have been considered a precursor of the Academy Awards. Movies, performers, directors — and later cinematographers and screenwriters — singled out by the Nyfcc usually have gone on to receive Oscar nominations, oftentimes the golden statuette itself. The New York critics awards also have the reputation of being "snooty" and "artsy." Are they? ‘City of Your Final Destination’ Isn’t Worth a Visit

Chicago – Although “City of Your Final Destination” is not the latest installment of the Rube Goldberg-inspired splatter series, it does seem to be populated with the walking dead. The only similarity shared between the “Final Destination” franchise and this picturesque drama is an overwhelming abundance of tedium, generated by a plot that often seems as stagnant as its listless characters.

In his heyday, director James Ivory made one wonderful, timeless movie after another. His collaboration with producer Ismail Merchant lasted over four decades. The filmmaking duo proved that sophisticated, proudly literate dramas like “A Room With A View,” “Howard’s End” and “Mr. & Mrs. Bridge” could find a wide international audience. Their films were understated, deliberately paced and novelistic but never dull. It was exhilarating to observe the subtle, wordless attraction between Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson in 1993’s “The Remains of the Day,” which still stands as

James Ivory's "Destination" In March

Screen Media is planning a March limited theatrical release of James Ivory's "The City of Your Final Destination" reports Variety.

Based on Peter Cameron's 2002 novel and adapted by Ruth Jhabvala, the story follows a young American academic, who attempts to persuade the reluctant heirs of a celebrated Uruguayan novelist to allow him to write an authorized biography of the writer.

Anthony Hopkins portrays the writer's brother and Laura Linney plays the writer's widow. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Omar Metwally, Alexandra Maria Lara, Norma Aleandro and Hiroyuki Sanada also star.

Paul Bradley and Pierre Proner produced the Argentina-shot flick which marks Ivory's first effort since the passing of longtime producing collaborator Ismail Merchant.

Streep Noms, #6 (1985)

A Note: I will be returning to reviewing Streep movies soon but for now let's return to discussing Streep's competitive Oscar fields. I'll try to wrap up the 80s pictures very soon. I knew this month would be Streep heavy I had no idea how mired down in the 80s nostalgia we'd get. See also: Farrah & Michael Jackson.


Six Oscar nominations is a lot for anyone but what is perhaps even more impressive / serendipitous about Meryl Streep's 1985 accomplishment is that Out of Africa, a big hit and Oscar champ, was her third Best Picture winner in seven years. That's quite rare. She would go on to lose Best Actress to Geraldine Page who was, at that time, the most nominated performer (8) never to have won the golden boy (Peter O'Toole now holds the record since he lost on his 8th nomination). Page died a scant 15 months later at 62 years of age.
