Blu-ray Review – Rollercoaster (1977)

Rollercoaster, 1977.

Directed by James Goldstone.

Starring George Segal, Timothy Bottoms, Richard Widmark, Harry Guardino, Susan Strasber, Henry Fonda, Helen Hunt, Wayne Tippit, Steve Guttenberg, and Craig Wasson.

Synopsis:

A bomber threatens to blow up rollercoasters in various amusement parks unless his ransom demands are met.

Riding the crest of a wave of disaster movies in the late 1970s, Rollercoaster centres around the premise of a bomber setting off explosives on theme park rollercoasters, which marked a move away from the natural disasters of movies like Earthquake that were popular at the time. What also marks Rollercoaster out as a different kind of thriller is that the actual event of blowing up a rollercoaster is shown and done with in the first 15 minutes of the film, during which only a few conversational words are muttered by some of the staff of the amusement park but nothing else. It’s a bold

The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

Roger Corman’s ferocious gangster epic (more squibs!) bounces back in a UK Region B edition, noisier and bloodier than ever. Jason Robards, George Segal, Ralph Meeker and a couple of dozen top-notch hoods replay the ugly events that led up to the notorious 1929 gangland slaying — which now almost seems tame — where gun massacres are concerned, today ‘Every Day Is a Holiday.’

Canyon Cinema Cooperative: Catalogue No. 2, Supplement No. 1

In 1966, after six years of existence, the Canyon Cinema experimental film collective of San Francisco, California started its own cooperative distribution center, first listing films in the November ’66 issue of their News newsletter, in which they stated that they would be following in the footsteps of New York City’s Film-Makers’ Cooperative that had been distributing underground films since 1962.

This origin of the Canyon Cinema cooperative is covered in Scott MacDonald’s exhaustive history of the organization, in which he lays out the timeline of publication of the first two catalogs:

November 1966: Canyon lists films to rent in their News publication

December 1966: Canyon Cinema Cooperative Catalog, Number 1

1968: Catalog Number 2

1969: Catalog Number 2, Supplement Number 1

1970: Catalog Number 2, Supplement Number 2

1970: Catalog Number 2, Supplement Number 3

MacDonald states that the second Catalog was 128 pages long, but the Supplement Number 1 begins its numbering on its title page with Page 125. The

Susan Anspach obituary

Actor who starred in Five Easy Pieces and Play It Again, Sam

With her vibrant appearance in Bob Rafelson’s landmark road movie Five Easy Pieces (1970), Susan Anspach, who has died aged 75, emerged at the same time as her co-star Jack Nicholson as a significant figure in the new Hollywood of the 1970s. However, Anspach, unlike Nicholson, saw her film career dwindle after a decade that has been called Hollywood’s last golden age.

“I was getting reviews that compared me to Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis,” Anspach said in 1978. “But there were no Hepburn or Davis parts.” Nevertheless, she made the most of the strong female roles she was given in the Rafelson movie, and in Play It Again, Sam (1972), as the ex-wife of a film critic (Woody Allen), and Blume in Love (1973), as the ex-wife of a divorce lawyer (George Segal) – both former husbands are still in love with her.

Susan Anspach, ‘Five Easy Pieces’ and ‘Blume in Love’ Actress, Dies at 75
Susan Anspach, the blonde actress known for her roles in ‘70s films including Bob Rafaelson’s “Five Easy Pieces,” Paul Mazursky’s “Blume in Love,” and Woody Allen’s “Play It Again, Sam,” died Monday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 75.

Anspach’s son, Caleb Goddard, announced her death to the New York Times and said the cause was coronary failure.

In “Five Easy Pieces,” Anspach played a serious pianist who had a steamy sex scene with Jack Nicholson despite being engaged to his brother; in “Play It Again, Sam,” she played Allen’s critical ex-wife. In Dusan Makavayev’s 1981 “Montenegro,” she played a disturbed housewife, and in “Blume in Love” she portrayed the ex-wife of George Segal’s character who he tries to win back.

Later in her career, Anspach landed recurring roles on television series. She appeared in the family drama “The Yellow Rose,” the 13-hour

Ship of Fools

Secure one major book with a serious subject, sign up a wagonload of stars (including a legend or two) and make sure every cookie-cutter character repeatedly explains themselves to the camera in close-up. That formula worked well for Stanley Kramer in 1965; his film hasn’t much of a reputation but the cast is gold. A bright new transfer makes the picture look very good.

The Goldbergs Season 5 Premiere Will Be a Weird Science-Themed Episode!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... The Goldbergs is one of the best shows on TV and if you're not watching... what are you waiting for!? It's so good! The nostalgia aspect of the series is what resonates with me most.

One of the things the series does that I love is when it features themed episodes that are inspired by classic 80s movies. Over the years they've played with The Breakfast Club, The Karate Kid, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Say Anything, A Christmas Story, Knight Rider, Misery, and Commando.

Now according to Goldbergs star Wendi McLendon-Covey, the Season 5 premiere will be a Weird Science-themed episode! I love that movie and I'm so excited that The Goldbergs is going to get a whole episode that pays tribute to the classic John Hughes movie.

In case you don't remember, Weird Science follows the story of two geeks,

The Bridge at Remagen

What’s the best true-story WW2 combat film for pure-grit, no-nonsense tanks ‘n’ bombs ‘n’ crazy mayhem action on a giant scale? This non-stop battle epic gets my vote. George Segal and Ben Gazzara’s infantry dogs are suitably tough, cynical and desperate, especially when they’re repeatedly sent into danger. The history is fairly accurate — there was indeed a race to seize the last bridge across the River Rhine.
