Kyle is the youngest of three sons. His father was a salesman for Beechnut. He was avid basketball player in school, but his dreams of athletics and an Air Force career were ended because of extreme near-sightedness. After seeing a performance of "Hello Dolly," he immediately decided that he wanted to become an actor. He moved to Hollywood in 1981 to seek his break. It came in 1986, with a three-month stint as a former mental patient on the soap Santa Barbara (1984). He then got a recurring role as an AIDS patient on St. Elsewhere (1982).

Raised in Federal Way, Washington.
Before beginning Homicide: Life on the Street (1993), Kyle moved to Baltimore. He put all of his possessions in storage in Los Angeles. A year later, he returned and found that everything he owned had been stolen.
Certified yoga instructor trained in karate and kung fu.
His hero is Jack Kerouac.
He has worked with Jill Hennessy on three different series: Law & Order (1990), Homicide: Life on the Street (1993) and Crossing Jordan (2001).
Along with Richard Belzer, Clark Johnson, Yaphet Kotto and Sharon Ziman, he is one of only five actors to appear in both the first and last episodes of Homicide: Life on the Street (1993): Homicide: Life on the Street: Gone for Goode (1993) and Homicide: Life on the Street: Forgive Us Our Trespasses (1999).
