Blu-ray Review – Amazon Women On The Moon (1987)

Amazon Women on the Moon, 1987.

Directed by John Landis/Joe Dante/Carl Gottlieb/Robert K. Weiss/Peter Horton.

Starring Rosanna Arquette, Michelle Pfeiffer, Arsenio Hall, Peter Horton, Griffin Dunne, Joe Pantoliano, Forrest J. Ackerman, Sybil Danning, Henry Silva, Carrie Fisher, Steve Guttenberg, Jenny Agutter, Dick Miller, Paul Bartel, and Russ Meyer.

Synopsis:

An anthology of comedy shorts and sketches based around the broadcast of a spoof 1950s sci-fi movie.

French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr once noted that the more things change, the more they stay the same and how right he was because Amazon Women on the Moon, despite being made in the 1980s, is as largely relevant today as it was back then. Yes, the fashions and the technologies change but the sentiment and the ideas that are being parodied remain as funny and sharp as they did 30 years ago, which is quite depressing when you think about it.

Trailer for Netflix's 'Happy Anniversary' with Ben Schwartz & Noel Wells

"I miss the person that I met three years ago... That guy was romantic." Netflix has debuted the first trailer for a romantic comedy titled Happy Anniversary, which is the directorial debut of screenwriter Jared Stern. The story is about a couple, as they approach their third anniversary, who must decide whether to stay together or call it quits. This actually looks maybe even better than you're expecting, so you might want to take a look anyway. Ben Schwartz (from The Intervention, "Parks and Rec") and Noel Wells (from Mr. Roosevelt, Infinity Baby, "Master of None") star as the main couple Sam and Mollie, with a cast including Annie Potts, Joe Pantoliano, Isidora Goreshter, and Rahul Kohli. This does look like a good mix of humor and emotion, with some funny and still poignant moments. Might hit a little close to home for some. Here's the official trailer for Jared Stern's Happy Anniversary,

‘Happy Anniversary’ Trailer: Noël Wells and Ben Schwartz Fall In (and Maybe Out of) Love in Netflix Rom-Com — Watch

Sam and Molly aren’t having a great anniversary. In Jared Stern’s directorial debut “Happy Anniversary,” the long-time couple are ostensibly celebrating three years together when Molly (Noël Wells) makes a startling admission: she’s not happy. That’s certainly one way to put a major pin in Sam (Ben Schwartz) offering up relatively benign wish of “happy anniversary” on, you know, their actual anniversary.

What follows in the new Netflix original is a day-long exploration of the pair’s relationship, complete with flashbacks to their earliest days, and a two-pronged perspective that allows both Sam and Molly to explore the good and bad of their bond, and where it might go in the future.

It’s a cute conceit for a rom-com, but it’s also laced through with truth — Stern himself has admitted it’s a semi-autobiographical tale — and the problems that plague Sam and Molly are extremely relatable.

Five Of The Best: Christian Bale Movie Performances

In cinemas this weekend is the American western Hostiles, the latest film from Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Black Mass, Crazy Heart). Christian Bale leads the cast of a battle-worn Army captain Joseph J. Blocker, who reluctantly agrees to escort a Cheyenne chief (Wes Studi) and his family through dangerous territory. We caught the film at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and despite having a few minor issues with the film, praised it for its key performances, notably from Bale and co-star Rosamund Pike. Here, in a special feature, we take a look at Christian Bale’s five best film performances over his multi-decade career.

5. The Dark Knight Trilogy, Christopher Nolan (2005-2012)

Christian Bale’s five best film performances

We’ll kick things off with arguably Bale’s highest profile role, that of Bruce Wayne and Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, which kicked off

Box Office: ‘Coco’ to Dominate Slow Pre-‘Star Wars’ Weekend
Ahead of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Disney-Pixar’s animated comedy “Coco” is looking to dominate the North American box office with about $18 million at 3,748 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

It’s the third straight winning weekend for “Coco” at the domestic box office, which has seen major studios opt to hold off on any new releases for two weeks instead of offering wide openings. Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is expected to dominate when it opens on Dec. 15.

The weekend will see one wide opening as Broad Green Pictures launches its last movie with the action-comedy “Just Getting Started” debuting in 2,146 locations. The film, starring Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Rene Russo, is tracking to gross an unimpressive $4 million this weekend. Also starring are Jane Seymour, George Wallace, Joe Pantoliano, Glenne Headly, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Graham Beckel, and Elizabeth Ashley.

Coco Goes for Coveted Three-Peat at the Box Office This Weekend

Coco Goes for Coveted Three-Peat at the Box Office This Weekend
Disney Pixar's Coco has had no trouble taking home the box office crown in its first two weekends in theaters, and thanks to minimal competition this weekend, it's on track to win for a third weekend win in a row. The only new movie opening in wide release at the box office is Broad Green Pictures' Just Getting Started, which doesn't have a theater count estimate or a Rotten Tomatoes score yet, but still isn't expected to give Coco much competition. While it certainly won't be pretty, we're predicting that Coco will pull off its third win in a row with $14.5 million.

Will Coco be able to pull off the coveted three-peat at the box office? This year hasn't been kind to repeat performers. Though some movies have managed to stay in the public interest a lot longer than others. Split was the first movie of the year to win

Tim Roth on 'Tin Star,' Tarantino and Tupac

Tim Roth on 'Tin Star,' Tarantino and Tupac
Skinheads, hit men, cops, criminals, cops-posing-as-criminals, princes, junkies, executioners, politicians, supervillains, an 18th-century fop, a 19th-century impressionist painter and a 21st-century psychotic chimp – you name it, and there's an extremely good chance that Tim Roth has played it. The 56-year-old British actor has the sort of varied, overstuffed resumé that suggests a reserved spot in the steadily-working-character-actor canon, and has not one but two projects hitting TV screens at the moment: Tin Star, an Amazon thriller that about an expat cop living in Canada that starts as a quirky fish-out-of-water

Morgan Freeman in Full Trailer for Action Comedy 'Just Getting Started'

"I've got a big secret, wanna hear?" Broad Green Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for the new old-timers action comedy Just Getting Started, formerly titled Villa Capri until this official trailer arrived. From director Ron Shelton (of Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump, Tin Cup) the film is about an ex-fbi agent and an ex-mob lawyer in the witness protection program who have to get over their petty old folks' home rivalry in order to save themselves from a mob hit. Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones star, with a cast including Glenne Headly, Rene Russo, Joe Pantoliano, Elizabeth Ashley, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Graham Beckel, and Mel Raido. This seems to be another one of those super cheesy "old people can still be funny" comedies we see all the time that really aren't that funny. This is definitely not for me. Here's the first official trailer for Ron Shelton's Just Getting Started,

Exclusive Interview: Director Sanjeev Sirpal and composer Bryce Jacobs discuss their collaboration on Random Tropical Paradise

As La La Land reminded us this year, every movie needs to have a good score or theme. Without it, a movie just doesn’t feel complete. Prime examples being Rocky without Bill Conti’s motivating ‘Gonna Fly Now’ theme or Hans Zimmer’s whole Inception score for that matter. They would just be completely different films. Continuing the conversation of importance a score has on a film in today’s market, we decided to speak with writer/director Sanjeev Sirpal and composer Bryce Jacobs and discuss their collaboration on the upcoming film, Random Tropical Paradise which is being released in theaters & VOD June 9th and stars Bryan Greenberg (The Mindy Project), Brooks Wheelan (Saturday Night Live), Spencer Grammer, Jessica Lowe and Joe Pantoliano. 'Homie-Moon' Craziness in Official 'Random Tropical Paradise' Trailer

"We're in a Fast & Furious movie right now, nothing has to make sense." Gunpowder & Sky has debuted a trailer for a wacky comedy called Random Tropical Paradise, about two friends who end up going on a honeymoon together. The story is that, when one guy discovers his soon-to-be-wife is cheating on him, he cancels the wedding. But his friend suggests that instead of cancelling the honeymoon, they turn it into a "homie-moon" and take the trip to this random tropical paradise together and have fun while they can. As with all tropical paradise movies, this dips into the drug boss trope and there's clearly a few drug trip scenes in this. Starring Bryan Greenberg, Brooks Wheelan, Joe Pantoliano, Spencer Grammer, Brittany Furlan, Beth Littleford, Kyle Kinane, & Alphonso McAuley. This looks a bit too crazy for my tastes. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Sanjeev Sirpal's Random Tropical Paradise, from YouTube: For Harry Fluder,
