"Star Trek" is notoriously good to its actors. If a hard-working performer gets a small gig in one episode of "Star Trek," it becomes incredibly likely they'll be invited back for another. Armin Shimerman, for instance, played a talking treasure chest and a random Ferengi character on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" years before he was offered the main role of Quark on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Likewise, Tim Russ played a terrorist on the "Next Generation" episode "Starship Mine" before he became Tuvok on "Star Trek: Voyager." There are dozens of other examples. Once you're in the "Star Trek" family, you'll be a part of it for life.
According to the book "Star Trek: The Next Generation 365," by Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann, actress Famke Janssen was offered a venerated spot in the Trek family ... that she turned down. Janssen appeared in the episode "The Perfect Mate" as Kamala,...

Johnny Depp has responded to recent accusations from actress Lola Glaudini, who claimed the actor berated and mistreated her while filming a scene for the 2001 film Blow.
In a resurfaced episode of the Powerful Truth Angels podcast from Jan. 30, Glaudini recalled one scene where the film’s star Depp was doing a monologue and director Ted Demme (who died in 2002) instructed her to “burst out laughing” when he said a specific line.
“I hear the cue, and I go hahaha, I do a big laugh or whatever,” Glaudini said, noting that she did it for several takes. “Johnny Depp, when they say cut, walks over to me, comes up to me, sticks his finger in my face — and I’m in a bikini on the ground like this — and he comes over and he goes, ‘Who the fuck do you think you are? Who the fuck do you think you are?...

Usually, when we think of holiday movies, we picture feel-good family comedies filled with light-hearted shenanigans and bittersweet life lessons. Okay, and the occasional violent slasher. While we love plenty of those movies, they’re often missing crucial elements of the holidays we experience in real life: sordid disagreements, petty bickering, and, in the words of the great Frank Costanza, the airing of grievances. Well, there’s at least one-holiday dramedy that accurately depicts how the most wonderful time of the year can bring out the worst in us: Ted Demme’s 1994 film The Ref, which tells the story of a cynical cat burglar who makes the biggest mistake of his life when he takes the wrong couple as hostages. Because these two would wear down even the most composed of criminals. It’s a snarky, acid-tongued little gem of a movie, although not necessarily one you’d want to watch with grandma and grandpa.

Natalie Portman was 16 years old when principal photography commenced on "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace." She was a precocious talent capable of stealing scenes from Oscar winners like Al Pacino (in Michael Mann's "Heat") and Timothy Hutton (in Ted Demme's underrated "Beautiful Girls"), and now she was going to play the eventual mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa in George Lucas' long-awaited, madly anticipated Prequel Trilogy. Career-wise, it was a part no actor her age could afford to turn down. The first film's blockbuster success was preordained; her image would be projected on movie screens all over the world, thus making her a global superstar.
There was just one problem: Lucas hadn't directed a movie in 22 years and wasn't keen on dealing with actors. He offered the helm on "The Phantom Menace" to Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, and Ron Howard, and asked playwright David Hare...

The Emmy landscape has changed drastically in the past two decades. Going in to the 54th Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept. 22, 2002, it was a broadcast network — NBC — that led the nominations with 47. Emmy powerhouse HBO came in second with 38. FX and VH1 earned their first nominations while the first major streaming series, Netflix’s “House of Cards,” was still 11 years away. Several of this year’s contenders for Emmy gold were either nominated or won 20 years ago.

“Coming 2 America” proves that audience are still itching to see Eddie Murphy onscreen, no matter how long he takes between films. In a recent interview promoting “Coming 2 America,” Murphy bluntly explained why he stopped acting for so many years. “I was making shitty movies,” he said. “I was like, ‘This shit ain’t fun. They’re giving me Razzies…Motherfuckers gave me the ‘worst actor ever’ Razzie. [So I thought], ‘Maybe it’s time to take a break.”
The film, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on March 5, picks up 30-plus years after the original. Prince Akeem (Murphy) is happily married to Lisa (Shari Headley), and living in Zamunda with his wife and three daughters.

Johnny Depp is one of the coolest and most diverse actors of his generation. Despite never winning an Oscar, the three-time nominee has played some of the most memorably eccentric characters in the history of cinema. During the 90s, no actor outside of maybe Tom Hanks and Kevin Spacey had a more fecund body of work.

Hulu’s ready to go beast mode, and has recruited AMC’s programming chief to help it grow its footprint as one of TV’s key streaming services.
Joel Stillerman, who spent nearly 10 years at AMC Networks – most recently as president of original programming and development for AMC and Sundance TV – has been named Hulu’s first-ever chief content officer.
Stillerman’s mandate? Come up with a content strategy that will grow Hulu’s advertising revenue (don’t forget, unlike Netflix, a good chunk of Hulu’s users see ads) and subscriber growth.
Hulu’s subscriber base was around 12 million last year, and at its upfront presentation last week, the company reported 47 million total unique viewers. But it still has a way to go to catch up to competitors Netflix and Amazon: According to eMarketer, Netflix boasts around 128 million individual users this year, while Amazon has around 85.3 million viewers.

The film world was deeply saddened when news broke today that Oscar-winning “The Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme had died in New York at the age of 73. Demme was a brilliant and versatile auteur, traversing genres with rarely a misfire. He is remembered by those who worked with him, and those whom his work inspired.
Tom Hanks, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a lawyer dying of AIDS in Demme’s “Philadelphia,” wrote: “Jonathan taught us how big a heart a person can have, and how it will guide how we live and what we do for a living. He was the grandest of men.” Meryl Streep, who worked with Demme on 2015’s “Ricki and the Flash,” said: “A big hearted, big tent, compassionate man- in full embrace in his life of people in need- and of the potential of art, music, poetry and film to...

Not be confused with Anton Corbijn’s James Dean biopic last year — or Ted Demme’s 1999 comedy, for that matter — Life is the title of one of Sony’s biggest tentpoles next year, and the first trailers have now arrived. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, he reteams with his Safe House star Ryan Reynolds (himself reteaming with Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese) in the sci-fi adventure, which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal.
The film follows a crew on the International Space Station as they discover life on Mars, but it doesn’t seem to take to kindly to them. Despite a few shots seemingly directly from Gravity and a premise that’s been done many times over, hopefully the caliber of the cast and the humor from the writing duo can deliver something special next summer.
Check out the trailer below, along with a slightly longer international version, for the film also starring Rebecca Ferguson,...

This tale of a federal agent who went undercover among Colombian drug lords, adapted from Robert Mazur’s memoir, is indulgent and interminable
Brad Furman gave us the smart La thriller The Lincoln Lawyer starring Matthew McConaughey in 2011, which got me wondering if he shouldn’t be taking on adaptations of Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiaasen. Now he directs this stodgy, shapeless and almost endless Miami drug-ring drama starring its executive producer, Bryan Cranston. It feels like playing five hours of Grand Theft Auto. The Infiltrator is adapted from the memoir by Robert Mazur, a federal agent who went undercover among Colombian druglords associated with Pablo Escobar and helped bring down his crooked banking infrastructure; the screenwriter who adapted Mazur’s book is the director’s mother: Ellen Brown Furman. Despite its rampaging monster approach to the holiday season and the imposing, sort-of terrifying giant horned goat-man who provides its title, Krampus isn’t, at heart, an anti-Christmas picture-- it has at least one bloodshot eye pitched toward seasonal classic status. The movie’s story is centered on a family at war with itself—semi-sophisticated suburbanites Adam Scott and Toni Collette and their kids hosting a clan of boorish, right-wing Walmart-warrior relatives headed up by David Koechner and Alison Tolman— who finds itself besieged by the impish and deadly forces of Krampus, the flip-side of holiday cheer, Darth Vader to Santa’s Obi-wan. When the only child left in the family who still clings to his belief in Santa Claus has the last vestiges of Christmas spirit (here so defined as the will to make sacrifices for the good of others) derided out of him, he tears up his last...

Whether he likes it or not, Johnny Depp is going to be a part of this year's Awards Season for his mesmerizing portrayal of Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass" (See my review right here).
The actor, previously nominated for "Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl," "Finding Neverland," and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street," infamously told BBC Newsbeat that he "doesn't want to win one of those things ever." Well, guess what? He maybe nominated and perhaps win! Why? Because he's just been baptized by the Palm Springs International Film Festival with its Desert Palm Achievement Award. And that's a good sign as we traverse Awards Season.
This is in my hood and I'll give you reports from the red carpet! Here's the complete press release:
Palm Springs, CA (November 17, 2015) . The 27th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) will present Johnny Depp with the Desert Palm Achievement Award,...

Peter Dougherty, a TV executive credited with bringing hip-hop to MTV as the co-creator of Yo! MTV Raps, passed away October 12th following a heart attack at his home in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, The New York Times reports. Dougherty was 59.
Dougherty was working in the on-air promotions department of MTV in the mid-Eighties when he suggested that the still-growing music network create a program that focused on hip-hop culture. Dougherty was a staple of New York's downtown scene, befriending artists like Beastie Boys and Rick Rubin. "He knew everybody, everybody knew him,...

L.A.-based artist Amanda Demme faced the challenge of her career when she was called to oversee one of the year's most controversial photo shoots. Also a prolific movie music supervisor (and widow of director Ted Demme), she says she didn't blink an eye when New York called this spring and asked her to shoot groups of women who claim they were raped and sexually abused by comedian Bill Cosby. The photographer details here how she pulled off multiple shoots for the cover story, how she used a "fine art" approach to capture her subjects, and why she hopes the women

The 1990s: a time when Sleepwalkers, Burt Reynolds, No Escape, Chevy Chase and F/X/2 could top the Us box office...
By the 1990s, studios were waking up to movie marketing, and the era of the blockbuster. Tim Burton's Batman, released in summer 1989, had introduced the idea of a big opening weekend, and modern movies now target their promotional work to get just that. As such, it's harder and harder for smaller films to snare the top slot at the Us box office, even for one weekend.
In the 1990s, particularly the first half of the 1990s, that wasn't so much the case though. In fact, many films that have long since fallen from the public conscious topped the chart. And in this piece, I've tried to capture some of them.
Inevitably, you're going to have heard of some of them, and what a UK dweller sees as a...

"The Blacklist" is one of the hottest shows on TV right now, and it's racking up some seriously cool guests to prove it. The drama, which stars James Spader as an ultra-smooth criminal nicknamed Red who decides to turn himself in to the FBI for his own mysterious reasons, will feature none other than Paul Reubens as a well-dressed criminal named Mr. Vargas in at least two episodes next season.
Exec producer Jon Bokenkamp told Entertainment Weekly, "It can't get strange enough for me. One of the most fun things is being able to write for actors who I've admired and think are interesting and try to play against expectations. I think this will be a fun one. I'd say he's gonna shake things up a bit when he enters Red's orbit." We'll always love Reubens as Pee-Wee, but we can't get enough of him in dark roles like this.
