Steven Spielberg Donates $1M to Sid Sheinberg's Favorite Cause
Steven Spielberg really knows how to repay a debt. Four months after Sid Sheinberg's death — and 50 years after the McA mogul gave the 20-year-old filmmaker his first TV gig — the director and wife Kate Capshaw donated $1 million to Sheinberg's favorite cause, Human Rights Watch.

"Sid was empathetic and perceptive, and absolutely committed to human rights for all. He and [his wife] Lorraine charmed and cajoled their incredible network of contacts to help build Human Rights Watch into an international powerhouse. We’re so grateful for having Sid as part of the Human Rights Watch ...

‘Bull’: Steven Spielberg & Amblin TV Pull Out Of CBS Drama Over Michael Weatherly Harassment Controversy
Exclusive: Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television is walking away from CBS’ popular legal drama Bull in the wake of the sexual harassment allegations against star Michael Weatherly.

A rep for Amblin confirmed to Deadline that Steven Spielberg, Amblin Television, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are no longer attached to Bull,, declining further comment.

Spielberg and Amblin TV co-heads Frank and Falvey served as executive producers on Bull for its first three seasons. The procedural drama was just renewed by CBS for a fourth season.

Bull, which has been a solid ratings performer for CBS, was never in doubt for renewal though the show became a center of controversy earlier this season over sexual harassment allegations against Weatherly by then-co-star Eliza Dushku, which resulted in a $9.5 settlement with the actress by CBS.

Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw have been major supporters of the Time’s Up movement from the start,

Book Review: "Through Her Lens: The Stories Behind The Photography Of Eva Sereny"

  • CinemaRetro
By Lee Pfeiffer

The art of still photography has played an important role in the promotion of motion pictures since the inception of the medium. However, most photographers who capture the images on set labor in anonymity. It has only been in the last few decades that studios even identified the photographers of publicity photos by name on the press materials that are so widely distributed. As readers of Cinema Retro know, we have long promoted appreciation of the stills photographers and have showcased their work in our magazine. This is why we are quite excited by a new book, "Through Her Lens" (published by Acc Art Books) by Eva Sereny, who broke through a glass ceiling when she started capturing on set images in the 1960s in what was a male-dominated profession. Sereny had an exotic background: she was born of Hungarian parents in London, moved to Italy and

Hollywood Bets Big On Gavin Newsom With Heavyweight Fundraiser At Universal

Hollywood Bets Big On Gavin Newsom With Heavyweight Fundraiser At Universal
While some members of the Hollywood ruling class flirted with backing ex-la Los Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for Governor during the primaries, there was no doubt that this Democratic town was going to line up behind Gavin Newsom once the current Lt. Governor secured the party’s nomination in early June.

So, it’s no real surprise that next week will find Universal Pictures Chair Donna Langley joining the usual deep pocketed suspects for a pricey fundraiser for the ex-San Francisco mayor on the Universal lot. “Gavin’s a northern California guy but he knows he needs southern California’s money to dominate this race,” a regular contributing industry insider told Deadline of the $1,000 to $29,200 a ticket August 16 shindig at the Grill at Universal Studios.

The 5 Pm event has a host committee that includes Langley and Ramin Shamshiri, NBCUniversal vice chairman Ron Meyer, J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw,

Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Others Set Fundraiser for Gavin Newsom on Universal Lot

Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Others Set Fundraiser for Gavin Newsom on Universal Lot
Gavin Newsom, running to succeed Jerry Brown as California’s next governor, will headline a fundraiser for his campaign next week on the Universal lot.

The host committee for the Aug. 16 event includes Jeffrey and Marilyn Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath, Jeff and Laura Shell, and Ron Meyer, according to an invite.

When it came to the governor’s race, the entertainment industry was a bit split between Newsom and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, but those divisions have dissipated since Newsom handily won the primary and Villaraigosa failed to land a spot in the general election. Instead, Newsom is facing a Republican challenger, John Cox, who badly trails in fundraising. Among Newsom’s recent contributors are Bill Maher, who gave $10,000; Alec Baldwin, who gave $5,000, and Sean Penn, who gave $29,200.

The reception on the Universal lot, to be held at the Grill commissary,

In Potent ‘Schindler’s List’ Panel, Steven Spielberg, Liam Neeson And Ben Kingsley Get Emotional 25 Years Later

In Potent ‘Schindler’s List’ Panel, Steven Spielberg, Liam Neeson And Ben Kingsley Get Emotional 25 Years Later
Tonight’s Schindler’s List retrospective event at the Tribeca Film Festival yielded more than a few familiar stories. But it also brimmed with unchecked emotion from director Steven Spielberg and four of his cast members, including Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley, who all watched the film with a theatrical audience for the first time in nearly 25 years.

Moments after the lights came up after the screening and a long ovation from the Beacon Theatre crowd had subsided, Spielberg said he last saw the film with a theatrical audience in 1993, when it had a series of European premieres. “There were so many moments that washed over me,” he said, his voice charged with emotion.

Asked by moderator Janet Maslin of The New York Times for his reaction to seeing it again, he said, “I watched the film and I was just …. proud. I’m very, very proud.” He later added

Steven Spielberg: It May Be Time For A Female ‘Indiana Jones’

Steven Spielberg: It May Be Time For A Female ‘Indiana Jones’
Director Steven Spielberg says action star Indiana Jones, indelibly branded by Harrison Ford in the film franchise, may be ripe for a change.

In an interview with British media outlet The Sun, Spielberg said it was time the explorer took “a different form,” nodding in affirmation when asked if that meant a woman.

“We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan,” Spielberg said. “And there would be nothing wrong with that.” He acknowledged that some fans might be angry at the massive change in the iconic film star’s gender.

Spielberg, making the media round to tout his latest, Ready Player One, has long been a strong supporter of women and is a supporter of the Time’s Up movement for gender equality. He also had one lucky connection with women and Indiana Jones: Spielberg’s longtime wife, Kate Capshaw, met the director in 1984 when she starred

A Visit to Space Camp for National Geographic’s ‘One Strange Rock’

I never wanted to be an astronaut. Even when I was seven, I looked up to the stars and the blackness surrounding – and thought, ‘Nope, not for me.’ There was something terrifying about the infiniteness of space – the blackness, only blackness with tiny specks of illumination. I found the night sky deeply unsettling. I remember, as a child, watching the 80s film Space Camp (with Kate Capshaw, Tate Donovan and twelve-year-old Joaquin Phoenix) and being absolutely mortified when the five kids accidentally get launched into space. If that ever happened to me – I’d be doomed, lost forever …
