Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and the Problem with Rock-n-Roll Biopics

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: ‘Rocketman,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and the Problem with Rock-n-Roll Biopics
Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody will undoubtedly ensure more foot-stomping and fist-pumping rock 'n' roll biopics in our future. The good news is that there is no end to worthy subjects (David Bowie, Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield movies are on the way). The bad news is that fans of the genre — as well as the performers portrayed — are being poorly served by these entertaining but ultimately vapid confections that seem pre-fabbed to sell song downloads rather than take a deep dive into the artists' psyches. Why not do both?

The necessary essence of all biopics about ...

UCLA Turns 100 With a Year of Celebrations

  • Variety
UCLA has So Much to celebrate from its first 100 years, it’s going to take 12 months to do it.

In its first century, the school has produced alumni ranging from such iconic athletes as Jackie Robinson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, to politicians including Ralph Bunche, the first African American to win a Nobel Peace Prize, to entertainment luminaries such as Academy Award winning writer and director Francis Ford Coppola and trailblazing talent such as Gabrielle Union.

UCLA’s centennial celebration, which kicks off May 18 at the school’s alumni day, will spotlight the school’s achievements and achievers past and present, while also keeping an eye on the future and the next hundred years.

Planning it was a monumental challenge, according to Carole Goldberg, chair of the centennial celebration steering committee. Goldberg, who has been part of UCLA’s law faculty since 1972, says she and her committee have been planning the festivities for several years.

iZombie Season 5 Episode 2 Review: Dead Lift

iZombie bites off more than it can chew in this ambitious, yet problematic episode about the rising tensions between New Seattle's tribes.

This iZombie review contains spoilers.

iZombie Season 5 Episode 2

After a stellar start to Season 5, iZombie stumbles in the second installment of its final season. As mentioned in last week's review, this show has done an impressive and ambitious job of slowly shifting its setting from "real-world Seattle" with a few zombies here or there to a post-zombie-outbreak, walled New Seattle under martial law.

The season premiere was a master class in balancing the disparate tones of the show's quirky, sometimes romantically-minded murder-of-the-week elements and its "we're living under a zombie corporation's martial law and a fringe group is slowly killing zombie soldiers" elements. "Deadlift" isn't as successful.

To be fair, "Deadlift" has a lot of—too much—plot to cover. Over the course of this episode, Jordan is killed by the Dead Enders,

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: What's Really "Black" About All These Black Movie Remakes?

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: What's Really
Hollywood has a long history of metamorphizing movies that featured white casts into movies with predominantly black casts. Most famously, The Wizard of Oz (1939) was remade as The Wiz (1978), but other color-coordinated remakes include Annie (2014), About Last Night (2014), Steel Magnolias (2012) and Death at a Funeral (2010). Within the past few months, we've had two such films: What Men Want (based on Mel Gibson's 2000 comedy What Women Want) and Little (less a remake and more a recycling of Big, Freaky Friday, Prelude to a Kiss and 18 Again). But is there anything especially "black" about these remakes that reinterpret the original ...

A Crime Wave Explodes in Neptune in New Trailer for Veronica Mars

Hulu has released a new trailer for the upcoming Veronica Mars revival series, and it gives us our best look yet at what we can expect from the story. In this next chapter of the series, Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) finds herself investigating a mysterious crime wave that involves explosions and murders in her hometown of Neptune, California.

Here’s the synopsis for the series:

Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the family of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

When previously talking about the revival,

How Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Ended Up Writing for the Veronica Mars Revival

The most surprising face to join Hulu’s upcoming Veronica Mars revival might actually be behind the scenes: Last September, executive producer Rob Thomas revealed that the show’s writing staff includes none other than NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. (Check out the announcement tweet below.)

The former basketball icon is also a bestselling author who has written many books, including a novel about Sherlock Holmes’ brother Mycroft, in addition to contributing columns to various publications. But how did Abdul-Jabbar find himself penning dialogue for Veronica & Co.?

“It’s kind of a crazy story,” Thomas tells TVLine. “He’s quite a Renaissance man…

HBO Orders ‘Showtime’ Pilot About ’80s La Lakers From Adam McKay

  • The Wrap
HBO has given a pilot order to the drama “Showtime” from director Adam McKay.

Based on Jeff Pearlman’s non-fiction book of the same name, the project will chronicle the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that defined its era, both on and off the court.

The Lakers roster of that era included notable players including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and James Worthy — all under the direction of head coach Pat Riley.

McKay will direct and executive produce the project alongside Kevin Messick for his yet-to-be-named production company, which formed following McKay’s recent split from longtime producing partner Will Ferrell.

HBO to Team With Adam McKay on Scripted Showtime Lakers Series

  • Variety
HBO is bringing the Showtime Lakers to the scripted arena with “Showtime,” Variety has confirmed.

The series, which has received a pilot order at the cabler, hails from Adam McKay, who will direct. “Showtime” will be based on Jeff Pearlman’s non-fiction book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.”

“Jeff Pearlman’s book and Max Borenstein’s script of the story of the Showtime Lakers really knocked me over. Sexism, racism, tragedy, redemption, no look passes and a giant cultural shift in America… I can’t wait to start filming,” said McKay.

The Showtime Lakers was a basketball dynasty which dominated the NBA during the 1980s. At the time, the Lakers were coached by the legendary Pat Riley, and had the unstoppable duo of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar leading the way. The Showtime Lakers team also featured the likes of Jamaal Wilkes,
