Tamlyn's father, the late Shiro Tomita, was interned at Manzanar during World War II as a child, and graduated from the Los Angeles Police Department Academy in 1963. He helped to form the nation's first Asian task force in 1977. He retired as a Sergeant on December 24, 1986 and died three years later.
