Filming to begin on 90 Feet From Home starring Shawn Michaels, Eric Roberts and Dean Cain

Director Brett Bentman is gearing up to begin production on his next film 90 Feet From Home.

“This story really hits the mark with just about anyone who’s ever been on the downside of luck,” states Bentman. “It strikes a chord and touches so many different aspects of love, or lack there of it, abuse, success and isolation. I think anyone who watches the film will come away with a fresh look at what they’ve been through themselves.”

King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen

Tfh Fearless Leader Joe Dante very astutely tip-toes around Larry Cohen’s stylistic filmmaking identity early on in King Cohen: The Wild World of Filmmaker Larry Cohen. Dante notes, “I would hardly call him the John Cassavetes of exploitation movies, but he does have a certain raw, visceral, realistic style.” Indeed, Larry Cohen’s signature film, Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), feels like what would happen if John Cassavetes directed a Ray Harryhausen film. And movie fans the world over are all the better for that most unlikely of authorial fusions!

For cineastes in La, King Cohen debuts Friday, July 20th, at Laemmle’s Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre. There will be supplemental shows on the 23rd at the NoHo 7, and the Laemmle Monica on the 26th. It will expand to other select markets on July 27th (keep a sharp eye on the flick’s official site for further screening details). The

The Dark Knight 10 Years Later: Still the Best Comic Book Movie Ever Made

The Dark Knight 10 Years Later: Still the Best Comic Book Movie Ever Made
There is little that can be said, in terms of praise, when it comes to The Dark Knight that hasn't been said already. Despite that, I recently revisited Christopher Nolan's masterpiece in honor of its 10th anniversary to see what I could come up with anyway. To start, this movie hasn't aged a day in an entire decade and it quite simply gets better every single time I watch it. This time, I was lucky enough to see it at an anniversary screening on a massive outdoor screen with pyrotechnics and other fancy business such as that built into the presentation. As cool as that may have been, there is little that can be done to improve upon perfection.

Before digging in, I have to admit up top that I've never been a big DC fan, always more of a Marvel guy. Further, Batman has always been one of my least favorite heroes.

Celebrating The Dark Knight’s 10th Anniversary: Why it remains the best superhero film

Ricky Church revisits The Dark Knight on its 10th anniversary…

When you look back to 2008, the change in the superhero film genre is incredibly evident. Not only was Marvel just getting started, but the number of superhero films per year was few and relegated mostly to the summertime. They also weren’t as universally adored and consumed by mainstream audiences as they are now or thought of as ‘serious’ films, but one film in the summer of 2008 changed that.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan’s sequel to Batman Begins which saw Christian Bale don the cape and cowl once again to battle Batman’s archenemy The Joker, played brilliantly by the late Heath Ledger. The film was more than just a typical summer blockbuster that featured superhero fisticuffs and grandiose action sequences, but had a range of deep themes and character arcs that not only built off Batman Begins,

Film Review: ‘King Cohen’

One of the loopier careers in and on the fringes of mainstream Hollywood is paid loving tribute in Steve Mitchell’s documentary “King Cohen.” There’s nothing particularly inspired about Mitchell’s treatment here — he’s directed a lot of DVD extras, and this first feature feels like a plus-sized version of one — but there’s considerable entertainment value in its subject. Particularly these days, when most commercial cinema seems given over to cookie-cutter sequels, spinoffs and remakes, a wellspring of original (not to mention frequently bizarre) ideas like those of producer-director-writer Larry Cohen seems akin to a fabled magical fountain.

Even back in his 1970s and ’80s heyday, when the ebbing drive-in theater market and growing presence of home-video got a lot of goofy genre exercises greenlit, Cohen’s films were notable for their eccentric individuality. Those who haven’t tasted the hybrid delights of “God Told Me To,

What to expect with Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Tom Jolliffe looks ahead to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

There is no doubting that in the last (nearly) three decades, Quentin Tarantino has been one of the best film-makers around. His back catalogue is rich, varied and impressive. If you’re asking me for rankings, then his first two, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction come out on top. Death Proof props up the list. The under-appreciated gem of his list for me is Jackie Brown. Then if we’re looking beyond his work as director and purely on writing duties, then I’ve got a whole lotta love for True Romance (which everything included would rank just behind Dogs and Pulp).

Since we moved into the 21st century I would say his projects have begun veering into inconsistency. That’s not to say he’s not doing great work. When Kill Bill is great, it’s really masterful.
