Soundtracking: "200 Cigarettes"

Happy New Year! Chris rings in 2018 by looking back at the 80s via the 90s with 200 Cigarettes!

Remember theme parties? Well, 200 Cigarettes is a film version of an 80s theme party, set over New Year’s Eve as several lovelorn folks slowly make their way to Martha Plimpton’s house. Sounds like a party we would all want to go to, so you would think that the film would have had a longer shelf life than it did. The film is as forgotten as the old acquaintances "Auld Lang Syne" talked about, and shouldn’t be considering its easy charms, famous cast, and relentless gifability. But while parties are meant to be replaced by other parties, the music stays the same.

#Raindance2017: In Another Life, Hello Again, Maya Dardel

Quick takes from the 25th Raindance Film Festival, with public screenings in London through October 1st, 2017.

In Another Life

British filmmaker Jason Wingard went to the Jungle, the refugee camp in Calais, intending to make a documentary about life there. But after befriending those living in squalor out of desperation, he decided to make a narrative based on their stories instead, shot in the Jungle and with some of them playing versions of themselves. The result is an astonishingly moving film that rehumanizes people who have been dehumanized in public discourse, putting faces to the still-ongoing refugee crisis and inescapably reminding us that those we’ve Othered are not very different from us. “In another life,” Syrian refugee Adnan (French actor Elie Haddad) tells us in the touching narration through which we follow his journey, “I was a teacher.” His new friends in the Jungle are other middle-class people from such far-flung places as Sudan,

Hello Again review

The screen adaptation of Hello Again struggles in its translation from the stage...

If there was ever a stage musical difficult to transfer to screen, it was Michael John Lachiusa’s controversial Hello Again. The story (or stories) or ten sets of lovers in ten time periods told non-chronologically, director Tom Gustafson and writer Cory Krueckeberg have attempted the near-impossible with mixed results.

How do you keep a film about sex with strangers from becoming a smut-fest? Well, the answer is apparently that you strip the story of most of its inherent sensuality and emotion, resulting in a well-directed and star-studded filmic experiment in place of a coherent movie.

Be prepared - every scene of the film is a sex scene in one way or another and, while that might sound quite appealing or even daring, in practice it feels rather relentless and, in the end, entirely pointless. We move

The Goonies Cast Reunite for Special Anniversary Dinner
You know the old mantra. The Goonies never say die! And while we'll probably never get Goonies 2, stars Corey Feldman, Sean Astin and Jonathan Ke Quan have never given up hope. The trio reunited for a special anniversary dinner last night. And Corey Feldman shared an image from the great Goonies feast on his official CDogg Instagram. In the photo, you can see what became of the kids who once went searching for the lost treasure of One-Eyed Willie.

"Goonies dinner! Here I am last night catching up with former cast mates, Sean Astin & Jonathan Ke Quan."

Corey Feldman and Sean Astin have been the biggest champions of getting The Goonies 2 made. Original director Richard Donner confirmed the movie was moving forward way back in 2014. But ever since then, all we've ever heard about the project has mostly added up to wishful thinking.

We spoke with Corey Feldman earlier this year,

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor Didn't Start Dating Until Almost a Decade After They Met
Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor first started dating in 2015 (much to the excitement of fans), but they've actually known each other for quite some time. Nearly a decade ago, the pair met at a dinner party when the American Horror Story star was still in a long-term relationship with actress Cherry Jones. Even though she was taken at the time, Sarah said she couldn't help but think that Holland was "the most exquisitely beautiful woman" she'd ever seen. A few years later, fate intervened when they crossed paths again and recorded videos for Martha Plimpton's nonprofit organization, A Is For. They started following each other on social media, one flirty direct message led to another, and they decided to go on a dinner date. And, well, the rest is history. Even though there is a 32-year age gap between the women, it's clear they share a special bond. "There's
