At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

By delivering performances that add up to almost four and a half hours, the four acting Oscar winners of 2024 came within six minutes of setting a new academy record for highest single-year screen time average. Ultimately, they landed in fifth place with a mean of one hour, four minutes, and 57 seconds, thus becoming only the 12th winning quartet (and sixth in 10 years) to exceed 60 minutes.
Newly crowned Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) are credited with a whopping 81% of their foursome’s screen time total, respectively clocking in at 1:53:10 and 1:37:19 and outpacing all of the 2024 nominees by at least four minutes. Supporting honorees Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) gave the fourth and sixth shortest nominated performances of the year, reaching individual screen times of 23:50 and 25:29.

For the past six years in a row, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor has gone to men with more than 35 minutes of screen time in their respective films. Although four of last year’s nominees could have bucked that trend, the academy chose to keep things consistent by honoring Ke Huy Quan’s especially lengthy performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” By appearing in a whopping 58 minutes and 33 seconds (or 42.03%) of the Best Picture winner, he more than comfortably surpassed his category’s screen time average and came within nine minutes of outpacing every previous supporting male victor.
Quan’s performance is the second longest in his film, as he and his Best Actress-winning on-screen wife, Michelle Yeoh, are separated by 36 minutes and 43 seconds (or 26.35%). Directly below him is Stephanie Hsu – who earned a supporting bid as his character’s daughter – at 42:18 (30.36%). Considering all 87 featured male turns that have merited Academy Awards,...

A 1985 New York Magazine article that first termed the phrase Brat Pack rocked the world of Andrew McCarthy and his co-stars of St. Elmo’s Fire — so much that each of the actors went years, even decades, without talking to each other. As McCarthy says, “actors want to be free of that baggage.”
Not anymore. McCarthy is now behind an ABC News documentary called Brats that addresses how that one phrase captured the zeitgeist and forever altered the careers of then 20-something actors like Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Mare Winningham and Molly Ringwald. Even then, it was not entirely clear who was a member of the Brat Pack.

Andrew McCarthy has written and directed Brats, and his documentary about The Brat Pack arrives later this year. More details within.
Tearing up the 1980s, both on and off cinema screens, was a bunch of young performers who earned themselves the collective name of The Brat Pack.
The group was made up of the likes of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Bob Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, and they sprung to prominence particularly in 1985 and 1986. That’s when that group made up the cast for two hit movies, namely St Elmo’s Fire (pictured) and Pretty In Pink.
Other films followed, and the tabloid interest was intense, leading writer David Blum to give them the Brat Pack name. Andrew McCarthy reflected on all of this in a memoir he penned called Brats, released in 2021. Now, Deadline reports that the story is being turned by McCarthy into a documentary.

Lovers of 80s movies know the Brat Pack. The group of stars who graced the silver screen in films like Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire were teen sensations and helped a generation grapple with coming-of-age issues in high school. Most have gone on to blossom into illustrious film careers, but they will always be remembered for their run in the 1980s film scene. While most also eventually bowed gracefully out of show business down the line, Andrew McCarthy was one member who had been out of the spotlight since the 90s.
Deadline is reporting that McCarthy will be rejoining his cohorts for the Hulu documentary titled Brats. McCarthy had written a memoir called Brat: An 80s story and has now written and directed the documentary that is currently in post-production. The film description reads, “McCarthy crisscrosses the country to meet up with some...

The Golden Globes telecast is heading back to CBS for the first time in more than four decades. The ceremony is a TV staple, with viewers having come to expect a show that’s looser than the Academy Awards, thanks in part to plentiful alcohol. But the Globes, which debuted in 1944 and could be seen on NBC in the 1960s, went unaired throughout most of the 1970s due to (yup) scandals surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s voting process.
Its first CBS broadcast took place on Jan. 31, 1981, where the big winner was Ordinary People, the adaptation of Judith Guest’s 1976 novel about an affluent family devastated by loss. Produced by Ronald L. Schwary, the film landed eight nominations en route to five trophies, including those for best drama, best actress (Mary Tyler Moore) and best director (Robert Redford, in his feature debut behind the camera). Natalie Portman was 16 years old when principal photography commenced on "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace." She was a precocious talent capable of stealing scenes from Oscar winners like Al Pacino (in Michael Mann's "Heat") and Timothy Hutton (in Ted Demme's underrated "Beautiful Girls"), and now she was going to play the eventual mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa in George Lucas' long-awaited, madly anticipated Prequel Trilogy. Career-wise, it was a part no actor her age could afford to turn down. The first film's blockbuster success was preordained; her image would be projected on movie screens all over the world, thus making her a global superstar.
There was just one problem: Lucas hadn't directed a movie in 22 years and wasn't keen on dealing with actors. He offered the helm on "The Phantom Menace" to Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, and Ron Howard, and asked playwright David Hare...

In the fall of 2021, Olivia Colman scored her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite not having succeeded on her Oscar bid for “The Father” that spring. This made her the 16th performer to prevail at the Emmys directly after going home empty-handed at the Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. Now that the 2023 Emmy nominations ballots have been released, eight of the 16 actors who lost Oscars at the most recent ceremony officially have shots at joining Colman on this list.

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title.
Stephen King’s short takes place in a psychiatrist’s office and sees Dr. Harper engaged with patient Lester Billings in a haunting session that unpacks the mysterious deaths of Lester’s three children. Feature film The Boogeyman uses the short story as the inciting event that brings the malevolent entity that plagued Billings’ home into Dr. Harper’s.
In the film, Chris Messina (Birds of Prey, Devil) assumes the role of Dr. Will Harper, a psychiatrist struggling to help his family through their collective grief, when Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian) arrives at his home office for aid. This pivotal introductory scene establishes Will Harper, the lore, and its ties to King’s source material.

Brendan Fraser's richly deserved comeback crested last March when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." It was the end of a long, hard road that began in the 2000s with a messy divorce, an alleged sexual assault at the groping hands of the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and a deep depression caused by the death of his mother. Fraser had gone from being one of the most exciting talents of his generation to a C-level movie star.
That generation included Chris O'Donnell, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck, all three of whom co-starred with Fraser in the 1992 antisemitism drama "School Ties." They were all often in competition for the same roles, but they eventually made their own way in the industry. Fraser's square-jawed good looks and comedic gifts landed him leading roles in "The Mummy" and "George of the Jungle,...

After a week of behind-the-scenes drama, it’s fantastic to know going into this first part of a two-part season six finale that S.W.A.T. isn’t going to end prematurely. CBS announced the series had been canceled, despite the ratings growing year-over-year, and then quickly reversed their decision after fans – and Shemar Moore – made their displeasure known. The network confirmed there will be a shortened season seven. (Read all about it here).
Back to season six… Episode 21, “Forget Shorty,” was directed by Paul Bernard from a script by Kent Rotherham and will air on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 8pm Et/Pt. Part two of the season (and thankfully not the series) finale will air on May 19th.

Hondo is feeling a “lot bit sad.”
Shemar Moore, who has played Sgt. Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson on S.W.A.T. since 2017, expressed his sorrow and frustration via Instagram late Friday over CBS’s decision to ax the drama after six seasons. He also pointed out that his show’s cancellation would leave network TV without the only African American actor in a leading role, and the only series with a truly diverse cast.
“I got sunglasses on cuz I’m a little bit sad,” Moore said on his Ig. “I’m a lot a bit sad. We got canceled, S.W.A.T., S.W.A.T. got canceled. It makes no sense. Look up the articles, read the articles. We are the best shows on Friday night at 8 for CBS. The last two years we have been killing it, us and the fire show…the fire show [Fire Country] that comes on right after us, and respect to those brothers and sisters.

S.W.A.T. is getting some help for its upcoming two-part Season 6 finale. CBS has released the loglines for both episodes, airing May 12 and May 19 at 8/7c, and they reveal that Timothy Hutton will be guest starring in both as DEA Agent Mark Boyle. It all begins in “Forget Shorty.” In the May 12 episode, “Swat teams up with the DEA, led by Mack Boyle, to conduct a massive gang sweep, only to discover that a vicious cartel is planting roots in the city and endangering numerous lives,” according to CBS. “Also, Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit) marks an important anniversary.” Then in “Legacy” airing on May 19, “the team works...

The only downside of Ke Huy Quan being a lock for the best supporting actor win at the Oscars is that you don’t get to hear much from the other nominees as a result. And this is a category full of interesting performances and actors at all stages of their careers.
All will be celebrated during the Academy Awards, which airs live Sunday on ABC beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. There’s still time to catch up on their performances before the show.
Here’s a bit more about the contenders:
Brian Tyree Henry
While filming “Causeway”, Jennifer Lawrence would sometimes finish a scene with Brian Tyree Henry and say to him, “You’re going to get nominated for an Oscar” and then just walk away.
Henry was a little baffled at the time, but Lawrence (a four-time nominee and one-time winner) was right.
“She was unforgiving in reminding me that this was possible.

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”), Judd Hirsch (“The Fabelmans”), Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), and Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). Our odds currently show Quan (31/10) triumphing, followed in order of likelihood by Gleeson (4/1), Keoghan (4/1), Hirsch (9/2), and Henry (9/2).
Hirsch is the only returning nominee among the five, as he was previously recognized for his featured turn in “Ordinary People” in 1981. He is the 74th man to earn at least two supporting notices and the sixth to be added to that list in the last five years after Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell, Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt, and J. K. Simmons. The 42-year gap between his first and second bids is the largest for any performer across any of the lead or supporting categories. Since Mahershala Ali set the current record for longest Best Supporting Actor Oscar-winning performance with his one hour, six minutes, and 38 seconds of screen time in “Green Book” (2019), the screen times of subsequent featured male champions have been increasingly smaller. Although the last three trophies have consistently gone to relatively lengthy turns, each has been about 10 minutes shorter than the one before it. This year will constitute a moment of truth, since, considering the last outcome, there is potential for at least a 22-minute jump in either direction.
Last year, Troy Kotsur was honored here for his performance as the patriarch of a primarily deaf family in “Coda,” which amounts to 35 minutes and 34 seconds of screen time, or 31.31% of the film. He fell 10 minutes and 35 seconds short of matching 2021 winner Daniel Kaluuya’s time in “Judas and the Black Messiah,” whereas Kaluuya himself landed nine minutes and three seconds below...

The 70th Academy Award ceremony on March 23, 1998, is the most-watched Oscar ceremony to date — most likely due to a “Titanic” film nominated for several awards. However, Gil Gates, who produced 14 Oscar ceremonies between 1990 and 2008, also wanted a special segment to recognize Oscar’s platinum anniversary, and arranged for 70 past acting winners to sit together on the stage, with Norman Rose announcing the films for which each performer won. It was a spectacular gathering of actors and actresses from Classic Hollywood, New Hollywood and the contemporary period.

“All I wanted to do this morning was get up and bake a pie,” says Judd Hirsch. Sadly, the 87-year-old actor’s plans to make his specialty — apple and blueberry — on a day off from ABC’s The Goldbergs have been interrupted by publicity duties for The Fabelmans. In Spielberg’s not-so-veiled memoir about his teenage years, Hirsch stands out as Uncle Boris, a distant relative who barges in, like the ghost of Christmas Past, while Sammy (Gabriel Labelle) and his family are mourning their late grandmother. His youthful enthusiasm makes it hard to believe that, if the gods smile on him, Hirsch will become the oldest ever Best Supporting Actor winner. He will certainly be among the most talkative…
Deadline: Where are you calling from? New York?
Judd Hirsch: I’m in Los Angeles.
Deadline: So you’re on the campaign trail?

Judd Hirsch never had much contact with Steven Spielberg or even knew anyone who had been in his movies before he got cast in the scene-stealing role of Uncle Boris in Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical feature “The Fabelmans.” “I had no idea why the hell he wanted me to do this part.” the 87-year-old Hirsch professes, “or what he might have seen me in. And to this day, I keep getting conflicting stories.” He said Spielberg told him that “this will be the movie that he would make without either aliens or dinosaurs. But by the time it was finished, I said, ‘I’m the alien dinosaur’.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Adam Driver has been in films that have made audiences cry, including Marriage Story. Ironically, his character in the Noah Baumbach film, Charlie, admits to crying at movies. It’s funny to think of the Girls actor watching movies and crying himself in real life. But it happens! Discover which three movies Driver has admitted to crying over.

“Basically the entire cast of Ordinary People is so brilliant,” Driver told W Magazine in 2015. According to the actor, Judd Hirsch’s acting is so “unsentimental.” In the film, alienated teenager Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton) attempts to die by suicide, but returns home after a stay in a psychiatric hospital. Age is just a number and it’s a sign that we’re all getting very, very old because we might actually get our first male acting Oscar winner who was born in the 1990s this year.
No man who entered this world in the ’90s has won an Oscar in either acting category yet. There are three currently in the running, two in Best Actor — Austin Butler (“Elvis”), who was born in 1991, and Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), who was born in 1996 — and one in Best Supporting Actor, Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), who was born in 1992. ‘Bosch: Legacy’ is a spinoff of Prime Video’s ‘Bosch’ Mimi Rogers and Titus Welliver in ‘Bosch: Legacy’ | Tyler Golden for Amazon Freevee
Bosch was one of the most popular original series on Prime Video, and many fans were disappointed when it was announced the series about LAPD detective Harry Bosch would end after seven seasons. Fortunately, Amazon decided it wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the character played by Titus Welliver.

Judd Hirsch is a living legend. Best known for his portrayal of cabbie Alex Rieger, the warm, principled central character of the classic sitcom "Taxi," Hirsch has been effortlessly segueing from television to stage to film and back again for over 50 years. He won two Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmys for "Taxi," and two Tonys for his performances in Herb Gardner's "Conversations with My Father" and "I'm Not Rappaport." He received a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 1980 for his portrayal of the tough, yet compassionate psychiatrist Dr. Berger in Robert Redford's "Ordinary People." He probably would've won that year, but he was the victim of category fraud when Paramount opted to run his co-star, Timothy Hutton, in the Supporting Actor category rather than Best Actor, even though the young performer was clearly the lead of the movie. Hutton won, and Hirsch hasn't been nominated since.

For Oscar voters, the unspoken rule regarding supporting male performances is the longer the better. An average winner in the category clocks in with 33 minutes and 55 seconds of screen time, and the last five champs have consistently raised that bar. Last year’s victor, Troy Kotsur, was honored for appearing in 35 minutes and 34 seconds (or nearly one-third) of Best Picture winner “Coda.” Of the 86 performances that have won Best Supporting Actor, his falls comfortably within the longer half.
Unlike the three Best Supporting Actor recipients who directly preceded him – Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Brad Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), and Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”) – Kotsur’s category placement was uncontested, meaning there was no talk about him instead belonging in the lead race. Emilia Jones, the un-nominated star of “Coda” who plays Kotsur’s daughter, towers over him by a margin of 52 minutes. His is...

With only 11 days left in the month, January cinema continues its two traditions. And no, it’s not about drafty theatres. As many moviegoers bemoan, the wintery time is often a “dumping ground” for flicks that don’t quite have the needed “hook” to send folks trudging through the snow to the multiplex. Last weekend’s big releases weren’t made available to us, though the previous week’s “biggie” M3GAN did well with the public and the reviewers. The other tradition is the release to smaller markets of serious “award bait” films, and this is one of three today. It’s got a big “pedigree” cast with a few Oscar winners. And it’s the follow-up to the writer/director’s big award-winner from a couple of years ago, so hopes are high that he’ll grab some more gold with The Son.

Michelle Williams must have laughed, at least a little bit, that this was even a news story. Back in September, two weeks after Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, it was revealed in big headlines that the film’s studio intended to push Williams in the Best Leading Actress category for awards consideration.
Awards pundits were shocked. Because at that point, even though the film wouldn’t open for two months, it seemed a safe bet that Williams’s acclaimed performance as Mitzi Fabelman, the protagonist’s kooky, withdrawn mother, was a lock to be nominated for and even win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
But what was that assumption based on? It wasn’t the performance itself, but instead an expectation that the studio, Universal, would take advantage of the ever-common practice of category fraud, where a lead or co-lead role is pushed in...

Stepping into the shoes of two-time Golden Globe-winning director Steven Spielberg is a tough task, but it’s one that Gabriel Labelle has nonetheless adroitly accomplished. The rising star is now close to being recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association himself thanks to his performance in “The Fabelmans,” which Spielberg co-wrote and directed as a roman à clef based on his own childhood. At 20, Labelle is the youngest hopeful in this year’s Best Film Drama Actor Golden Globe race, and would indeed be the category’s youngest nominee ever.
The title of all-time youngest Best Film Drama Actor contender has been held since 1982 by Timothy Hutton, who was 21 when he was nominated for “Taps” against eventual victor Henry Fonda (“On Golden Pond”). Until then, the distinction had belonged to 1964 nominee Stathis Giallelis. Hutton also still holds the record for youngest Best Film Supporting Actor winner, which he achieved...

We are eight months out from this year’s Academy Awards, where Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock after a derogatory joke aimed at his wife Jada Pinkett. He was subsequently barred from attending the ceremony for the next decade. And, now, the actor’s career lies in jeopardy. Several of his projects have stalled. Others, reportedly, have been outright cancelled. His historical action film Emancipation, which had finished production just a few weeks before that fateful Oscar night, cost Apple an estimated 120m, and though the studio has pressed ahead with its scheduled release plan, the debate is still rife over whether they’ve made the right call. Smith himself gets it. “I completely understand,” he told a US journalist in an interview this week. “If someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready.” I also respect people’s...

The first trailer for Antoine Fuqua and Apple TV+'s unsettling slavery drama "Emancipation" is finally here. Based on the true story of a widely-photographed slave nicknamed "Whipped Peter," Will Smith takes center stage as an escaped slave that becomes a crucial part of the abolitionist movement. Be warned that the new trailer does have some graphic imagery, so we would like to extend caution before watching it. However, the sweeping cinematography, epic fights, and powerful performances seen throughout tease a film that could secure Smith his fourth Oscars nomination and perhaps his second win.
The topic of slavery on film is a difficult and nuanced one, and it's important to understand all perspectives on it. After all, it's no secret that the history of Black pain on screen is one filled with exploitation. However, in a new interview with Variety Fair, Fuqua argued that the story of Peter, as...
