Paul Huntley Dies: Premier Stage, Film & TV Wigmaker Who Provided Coifs For ‘Tootsie’, ‘Cats’ And Cruella De Vil Was 89

Paul Huntley Dies: Premier Stage, Film & TV Wigmaker Who Provided Coifs For ‘Tootsie’, ‘Cats’ And Cruella De Vil Was 89
Paul Huntley, the celebrated wigmaker for film, stage and television who provided Dustin Hoffman with the coif that transformed the actor into Tootsie and did the same decades later for when Santino Fontana originated the role in a Broadway musical, died this morning at his London home following a short illness. He was 89.

His death was announced in a post today on his Instagram page.

During his more than five-decade career, he helped give the felines of Cats their sheen, topped Patti LuPone’s Evita with the now famous blonde bun and styled the signature black and white job Glenn Close wore as Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmations.

Huntley, who moved back to his native London recently from his longtime Manhattan home, retired earlier this year when Broadway’s Covid pandemic shutdown halted his professional opportunities, and after becoming bedridden following a fall at his Upper West Side home. His

Cruella (2021) review: Sympathy for the De Vil

Cruella (2021) review: Sympathy for the De Vil
Since Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland grabbed handfuls of eat me cake to become a ginormous box office smash, Disney have really started their live-action remake train rolling. It seems that with each passing year we have armfuls of new live-action remakes/reboots/prequels/sequels of their animated classics being primed for release. Thus far the results have been consistently enjoyable, if varying, with the finest probably being Jon Favreau’s incredible The Jungle Book in 2016. But, shockingly, their latest offering, Cruella, just might be the best since that point.

Much like Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent, you might say it was a somewhat challenging task to take one of Disney’s nastiest and most iconic villains and make a film about her origins. Naturally people will struggle to have sympathy for an attempted puppy killing fashion magnate, but Craig Gillespie’s very very pleasant surprise Cruella, does something a little different with the material.

‘Hacks’ star Hannah Einbinder leaps to the lucky No. 7 spot in Emmy odds

‘Hacks’ star Hannah Einbinder leaps to the lucky No. 7 spot in Emmy odds
The Deborah and Ava Comedy Hour may just continue at the Emmys. While Jean Smart has been ensconced in the predicted Best Comedy Actress lineup for a month, her “Hacks” other half, Hannah Einbinder, had been on the outside looking in in the supporting actress race. Until now. Since ballots were released Thursday, Einbinder has risen two spots to seventh place in the odds.

The surge is doubly noteworthy because the comedy supporting actress category will have one fewer spot than last year — seven instead of eight — due to the proportional rule. The newcomer had slowly been climbing up the ranks as “Hacks” was airing over the past month, circling around the 10th spot. Since last Sunday, Einbinder has climbed four spots, jumping over over Kathleen Turner (“The Kominsky Method”) and Naomi Ackie (“Master of None”) before passing Paula Pell (“Girls5eva”) and Aidy Bryant (“Saturday Night Live”) after Thursday. ‘Pose’ Creator Steven Canals on Life After His Groundbreaking Show: ‘I’m Greedy and I Want More’
This story about “Pose” and Steven Canals first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

The first time TheWrap spoke to Steven Canals, he was starting work on the television series “Pose,” a drama set in the world of the transgender and queer ballroom scene in New York City in the 1980s. Canals had come up with the idea as an education student at New York’s Binghamton University and developed it in UCLA’s screenwriting program. Once Ryan Murphy got the show off the ground and onto FX in 2018, the drama has followed a group of Black and Latino characters through the worst years of the AIDS crisis.

The cast includes Emmy winner Billy Porter as the motormouthed ball emcee Pray Tell and Mj Rodriguez as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista, who in the first episode builds an upstart “house” in the ball scene, the House of Evangelista.
