Oscars: Trio at the Top in the Lead Actress Race

Oscars: Trio at the Top in the Lead Actress Race
At this point in the Oscar race, all of the serious contenders for lead actress have been seen. So how is this year’s field stacking up?

Three performances feel like shoo-ins for nominations: Olivia Colman’s mad Queen Anne in “The Favourite,” a controversial category placement decision for a role some argue is supporting (though the film really features triple leads); Lady Gaga’s portrayal of a working-class diamond-in-the-rough in “A Star Is Born,” which could be one of two bids in the picture for the recording superstar, including original song recognition; and Melissa McCarthy’s best work yet as author/cat lady Lee Israel in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” which should make her a return contender after her first nomination seven years ago for “Bridesmaids.”

The battle for the gold likely lurks among that trio, but it will be interesting to see how the final two slots

‘Homecoming': Yes — Sam Esmail Knows the Geist Group Looks a Lot Like ‘Mr Robot’s’ E-Corp

(Warning: This story contains spoilers for the first season of Amazon’s “Homecoming.”)

If the Geist Group, the large monolithic company at the center of Amazon’s “Homecoming,” reminds you of another big, shadowy company from a Sam Esmail-led series, well, the “Mr. Robot” creator gets it.

“If I have to psychoanalyze myself, I would say there are a lot of similarities,” Esmail tells TheWrap after we pointed out how similar the two companies appear. The only real differences between the two are that Esmail came up with E Corp himself, while The Geist Group was something already baked into “Homecoming,” as it was adapted from the Gimlet Media podcast from Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz.

“I just think there’s something in the air right now, something in the world that’s going on where we have this untrustworthiness with powerful conglomerates,” Esmail said. “In that way, even

Homecoming Ep Sam Esmail on That Final Scene, His 'Instant Friendship' With Julia Roberts and Season 2 Hints

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Amazon’s Homecoming. Unless you have a plate of memory-erasing gnocchi nearby, proceed with caution.

Amazon’s thriller Homecoming messed with our minds all season long… but the final scene just about broke our hearts.

The freshman season ended with Julia Roberts’ Heidi tracking down her favorite client Walter Cruz to a remote California mountain town, clutching a road map she thought might jog his memories of their time together. But when she ran into him at a local diner, and saw how happy he was, she hid the map from

‘Homecoming’: The 2-Minute Scene That Should Mean an Emmy Nomination for Julia Roberts

‘Homecoming’: The 2-Minute Scene That Should Mean an Emmy Nomination for Julia Roberts
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Homecoming” Season 1, Episode 8, “Protocol.”]

Two shots in “Protocol,” Episode 8 of Sam Esmail’s “Homecoming,” turn it into the season’s game-changer. Four years separate their timeframes, but both focus on Heidi (Julia Roberts) as she realizes the ulterior motives of the therapeutic facility where she treated veterans.

In 2018, she realizes that the Homecoming program is meant to erase memories so the soldiers can return to combat; in the year 2022, she retrieves that memory, realizing that she programmed herself to forget it.

In the 2018 scene, Heidi is in her office and gathers the items on her desk, clutches them to her, and finally sets them back in their respective places. For Roberts, that scene “speaks directly to my complete faith and surrender to Sam Esmail,” she said. “Because I sat down at this desk, and I was like, ‘So what am I doing?'”

He explained that the scene would last two minutes (“Two minutes?

The Performer | Julia Roberts

The Show | Homecoming

The Episode | “Stop” (Nov. 2, 2018)

The Performance | It was an incredible coup for Amazon to get a super-duper A-lister like Roberts to headline its new thriller — but she didn’t just bring superstar wattage to the series. The Oscar winner also brought formidable acting chops to the complicated role of counselor Heidi Bergman, who finally fought back against the nefarious conspiracy that ensnared her in the riveting Season 1 finale.

Now knowing the full scope of Homecoming’s misdeeds, Heidi headed for the exits and fended off her boss Colin, and Roberts gave her an

‘Homecoming': Why the Amazon Series Abandons Its Source Material Halfway Through Season 1

(Warning: This story contains spoilers for the first season of Amazon’s “Homecoming”)

Amazon’s adaption of Gimlet Media’s “Homecoming” podcast remains pretty faithful to its source material — until about halfway through. From there, it goes in a completely different direction, completely abandoning the second half of the podcast’s narrative.

“We wanted to intentionally sort of deviate from the podcast at that point,” Sam Esmail, who executive produced the series alongside the podcast’s creators Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz, and directed all 10 episodes, tells TheWrap.

Homecoming” is based on Bloomberg and Horowitz’s two-season (12 episodes total) podcast for Gimlet Media, which centers on Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts), a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center — a facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life — and her work with one of those soldiers, Walter Cruz (Stephan James). Amazon picked up the show for two seasons, but whatever the second season looks like,

Homecoming Review: An Engrossing Conspiracy Thriller

Louisa Mellor Nov 9, 2018

From the creator of Mr Robot and starring Julia Roberts, Amazon’s Homecoming thriller channels classic '70s paranoia…

Before it was a TV show starring Julia Roberts and Bobby Cannavale, Homecoming was an audio drama starring Catherine Keener and David Schwimmer. Two seasons have been released so far, telling the story of Heidi Bergman, a counsellor working at a facility helping to reintegrate traumatised veterans into society.

Amazon bought the rights and brought in Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail to add pictures to Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg’s story. By all accounts, after a faithful adaptation of the podcast’s first episode, he and the team have added a great deal more than just pictures. Heidi’s story has been both expanded and accelerated, while background elements have been developed in preparation for an already-commissioned second season (look out for a mid-credits scene in the

What Is Busy Philipps's Real Name? It's a Lot More Common Than You Think

What Is Busy Philipps's Real Name? It's a Lot More Common Than You Think
Not only did actress Busy Philipps recently release a memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little, but her new late-night talk show, Busy Tonight ,premiered on E! at the end of October and has already featured A-list guests like Julia Roberts, Kristen Bell, and Mindy Kaling. If that wasn't keeping her preoccupied enough, she's also a mom of two with a hilarious Instagram account. You could say that she's really living up to her name these days.

But - plot twist - Busy's real name isn't actually Busy! I sort of wish it was, because it's cute and quirky and suits her personality so well, but Busy was actually born Elizabeth Jean Philipps on June 25, 1979. She was given the nickname Busy as a baby because she was so active, and she's been using it ever since. Growing up with the moniker also inspired how she and husband Marc Silverstein chose names for their daughters,

'Homecoming' Season 2 Burning Questions: Will Julia Roberts Return?

[This story contains major spoilers for Amazon's Homecoming.]

In 2017, Amazon ordered Homecoming to series with a two-season pickup. Now, the first of those two tales is out in its entirety, available for bingeing or slow-drip consumption, depending on the viewing method of choice. For those who have already reached the conclusion, there's an obvious question to address: what's next?

Little is known about a second season of Homecoming, with all parties involved tight-lipped about their continued participation in the series — with a notable exception of creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who also created the Gimlet Media podcast on ...

Notes on Streaming: Homecoming Compels, House Of Cards Wraps, They'll Love Me When I'm Dead Captivates

The new film by David Mackenzie, Outlaw King, is my pick of this weekend's streaming crop. Chris Pine, Florence Pugh and Aaron Taylor Johnson star; the historical battles and heated drama look impressive (watch trailer below). Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) has a good record of infusing familiar material with heat and passion, so it looks very promising. Outlaw King begins streaming on ">Netflix worldwide on Friday, November 9; it will also be playing in selected theaters, so check local listings. Julia Roberts stars in Homecoming, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) directed all ten episodes, which run about 30 minutes each. The brevity definitely works to the advantage of the series and makes it very easy to binge, which...

Actor, sculptor, soldier, champ? ‘Homecoming’ may give Stephan James an Oscar boost for ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’

Actor, sculptor, soldier, champ? ‘Homecoming’ may give Stephan James an Oscar boost for ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’
Stephan James is campaigning for Best Actor Oscar honors for his breakthrough role in the upcoming drama “If Beale Street Could Talk.” That could be a challenge for an actor so young — he’ll only be 25-years-old on Oscar nominations morning, which would make him the seventh youngest nominee of all time. But if any voters are concerned about his experience, he has already been working for years, and they can also see him this fall in a second starring role in Amazon’s “Homecoming.”

The streaming series stars James as Walter Cruz, a soldier being treated for post traumatic stress disorder at a facility run by a possibly misguided therapist (Julia Roberts). The first season of the series premiered on November 2 and was acclaimed by critics, with James singled out for his “innate warmth,” “easy charisma” and seemingly “effortless” acting choices.

'Homecoming': The Story Behind That Fake 'Titanic' Sequel

[This story contains major spoilers for Amazon's Homecoming.]

Throughout Amazon's Homecoming, Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts) travels a twisting path toward self-discovery — and, subsequently, at least some measure of self-loathing. It's a paranoid, adrenaline-filled ride, thanks in no small part to the dread dripping throughout director Sam Esmail's vision. As the narrative rushes toward the answers to the season's mysteries, it becomes increasingly clear that heartbreak awaits at the final destination.

Luckily, there's some levity littered throughout Homecoming, including one memorable instance that arrives in the second episode, "Pineapple." It's a classic moment ripped ...
