Recasting a character is always a tricky proposition. Sometimes, it's just not working out, and you go in a different direction, but when you're dealing with a franchise character, you risk angering longtime fans who have emotionally invested in a particular actor's performance. That was the case when "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" replaced Aunt Viv, recasting Janet Hubert with Daphne Reid, and people still talk about that situation decades later.
There are also instances when an actor dies while filming something meant to be ongoing. In early 2025, it was reported that, despite fan investment in Chadwick Boseman's performance, Marvel is considering recasting T'Challa ahead of "Black Panther 3." In fact, writer Jeff Sneider reported that the role had already been offered to someone new, but they decided not to take the risk. "They turned it down, not wanting to jeopardize their career momentum by stepping into Boseman's gigantic shoes,...

Writing TV is a collaborative process, which often means that seeing a writer's credit on top of a TV episode isn't as strong an indicator of their writing style as you'd think. They may have written most of the script, sure, but a lot of what happens is often decided by the showrunner and the other staff writers. Throw in the general chaos that comes with trying to make a career in Hollywood, and the result is you sometimes get writers who veer off in a surprisingly different direction after a major project is finished.
For example: Alec Berg, David Mandel, and Jeff Schaffer were all writers for the hit sitcom "Seinfeld," which went on for nine seasons and became one of the most critically acclaimed and popular shows of all time. When the series wrapped up in 1998, did these writers continue writing for Emmy-nominated, boundary-pushing sitcoms? Well, sort of,...

After 11 years away from our screens, Cameron Diaz has returned to dominate Netflix alongside Jamie Foxx with their espionage action-comedy, "Back in Action." The film sees the duo playing loving parents and former CIA agents who are forced back into the field when their old enemies resurface and disrupt their happy home life. For Diaz, of course, engaging in some well-choreographed fight scenes isn't new. After all, she starred in a pair of "Charlie's Angels" films in 2000 and 2003 and even joined Tom Cruise on a whirlwind adventure in the 2010 action-comedy "Knight and Day."
Now that she's returned to making movies after disappearing from Hollywood for a decade, will we be seeing more of Diaz on our screens in the future? More specifically, could her future include the types of meet-cutes -- ones that frequently end with her being swept off her feet -- commonly found in the rom-coms she used to star in?...

While Saturday Night Live’s mandatory underwear directive is well documented, one of the show’s unwritten rules, it would seem, is to avoid being an asshole to boss Lorne Michaels at all costs. Actually, come to think of it, that’s probably a good rule of thumb for any job.
During The Howard Stern Show’s Stern-less SNL “roundtable special,” former cast member Bobby Moynihan shared a story about the time he inadvertently did his Lorne Michaels impression in front of Michaels while telling an anecdote during a pre-show cast dinner with the week’s guest host. “It got really quiet for a second, and he just went, like, ‘Continue,’” Moniyhan recalled.
But that was nothing compared to the time that one cast member blatantly, and hilariously, disrespected the producer. “I was sitting next to Mark McKinney when he pretended to fall asleep,” Ana Gasteyer explained. “Like pretty obviously,...

One of the most beloved names in children's literature has always been Dr. Seuss. Theodor Geisel was one of the most remarkably creative minds of the 20th century, with stories and images of his that resonate with audiences young and old. His "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" is a standby for any graduation ceremony from middle school through college. Stories like "The Lorax" hit just as hard today for their direct commentary on the world at large as reflected through a fantastical prism. And his delightfully offbeat "The Cat in the Hat" is a wonderful depiction of youthful troublemaking for a pair of kids being overseen by the eponymous goofball, who's not exactly the world's safest babysitter.
But while "The Cat in the Hat" (the book) is beloved, and while the book has inspired a few different adapted takes, the 2003 film version is pretty widely reviled. And it's for good reason,...

Deadline reports that Eddie Murphy is set to star in Blue Falcon, an action comedy scripted by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen). Murphy will be playing a “retired superspy who heads for the destination wedding of his estranged son, and finds himself in proximity with his archrival.” It makes me think of that Andy Warhol quote: “In the future, everyone will play a retired superspy.” I think that’s how it went.

One of the things about Sally Albright that drives Harry Burns crazy in the 1989 movie “When Harry Met Sally” is her picky food sensibilities. It takes her an hour and a half to make a sandwich, he tells her. In the sequel, she only has 30 seconds.

“I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”
That was the mantra that self-help guru Stuart Smalley told himself at the end of every SNL sketch he starred in, sketches in which he hosted a cable access show called Daily Affirmations. While it was certainly played for laughs, the man who created and embodied Smalley — former Minnesota senator and SNL veteran Al Franken — says there’s more to him than you might assume at first.
At the very least, there’s no denying that Smalley had staying power. From 1991 to 1995, he was one of the most commonly recurring characters on SNL. He was so popular, in fact, that in 1995 he starred in the oft-forgotten movie Stuart Saves His Family, and today, he remains one of the most memorable SNL characters of the ‘90s.

A comedy movie starring and written by multiple Saturday Night Live cast members has suddenly become a streaming success over a year after its release. Since its debut in 1975, NBC's long-running sketch comedy show has served as the springboard for 11 feature-length films based on some of the show's most popular sketches and characters, which have seen mixed success. Their first foray into film came in 1980 with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's The Blues Brothers, which earned over $115 million at the box office against its $27 million budget.
The success of Wayne's World in 1992, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, encouraged Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michael to produce more film adaptations featuring popular characters. He brought back 1970s characters for Coneheads in 1993, followed by It's Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, and The Ladies Man. Conservative Shrek fans fear that the upcoming Shrek 5 will ruin the franchise with portrayals of non-traditional sexuality and gender identity because they ain’t the sharpest tools in the shed.
In April 2001, an animated film premiered in theaters across the country that would change movie animation and children’s entertainment forever. Loosely based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book Shrek!, the Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy-starred Shrek film jump-started DreamWorks Animation’s decades-long challenge of Disney’s dominance in a giant middle finger to the creatives’ old bosses while pushing the boundary with mature humor that they snuck over kids’ heads and under a PG rating.

There are many theories about what Shrek 5 will be about, and one suggests a great way to solve a major mystery about the ogres while continuing a key franchise trend. The world of animation has seen the rise of studios that have become strong competition for Disney and Pixar, and at the top is DreamWorks. The project that boosted the studio and established it as a competitor to Pixar is Shrek, released in 2000. Loosely based on the 1990 children’s picture book of the same name by William Steig, Shrek gave an unexpected but refreshing twist to fairy tales.

Iconic American comedy show Saturday Night Live turns 50 this year, kicking off the celebrations is a four part documentary.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Saturday Night Live is responsible for launching the careers of a huge amount of American comedy talent, from the early days with Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Bill Murray, through eras with the much missed Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Molly Shannon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig and many, many more.
This month sees the release of Saturday Night in the UK, following its release in the US last year. It’s a new film from Jason Reitman, who co-wrote the script with Gil Keenan, and it dramatizes the chaotic, stressful ninety minutes leading up to the very first show in 1975. It stars Gabriel Labelle as Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase,...

The story of Shrek started all the way back in 2001, and it’s still not over!
In fact, the first movie launched a mega-successful franchise fronted by some of the industry’s most beloved actors that is still going strong with a new movie planned for 2026.
The animated series flipped traditional fairytales on their heads with an irreverent sense of humor and surprising twists and turns. The star-studded cast of industry heavyweights didn’t hurt, either.
Starring Mike Myers as the grumpy ogre with a heart of gold, Eddie Murphy as his sidekick and Cameron Diaz as the plucky love interest, it was a guaranteed success.
With the new movie in the works, we decided to look back and revisit the cast to rank them based on their estimated net worth. There were quite a few ties, including two stars who came in at the top spot after amassing approximately $200 million a piece!

Deadline (via Toonado.com) has learned that Shrek 5 is now set to open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. The long-awaited sequel had originally been scheduled for July 1, 2026, so while this delay isn't too big, those extra five months are going to sting for impatient Shrek fans.
On the plus side, Minions 3 has shifted from June 30, 2027, to that July 1 slot. That's a huge jump forward and an indication work on the movie must be progressing well.
It's also been revealed that an untitled Illumination event movie has moved from March 19, 2027 to Minions 3's vacant June date.
Shrek 5 is being released to coincide with DreamWorks' 25th anniversary, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all set to reprise their respective roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Shrek franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon will be at the movie's helm.

Universal Pictures changed its animation schedule on Friday by moving the release dates for two of its most popular franchises. ‘Minions 3’ will come out earlier than planned, and ‘Shrek 5′ has been pushed back to the winter holidays of 2026.
The intended release date for “Minions 3” was June 30, 2027, but it will now be July 1, 2026. This move puts it during the busy Independence Day weekend. The choice came after the huge success of the Despicable Me franchise. It has made over $5 billion at the box office worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film series ever.
The creative people of the first two films will return to the third Minions film. You can count on Pierre Coffin to return as the movie’s director and to voice the famous yellow figures. Brian Lynch wrote the script. He is known for writing “The Secret Life of Pets.” The movie is also being worked...

You’ll have to wait a little longer to learn if all that glitters is gold.
Universal has announced that DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek 5” will be moving from July 1, 2026, to Dec. 23, 2026. In its place, Universal will open Illumination’s “Minions 3,” which was previously supposed to come out a year later. That’s the kind of chaotic scheduling a minion would really embrace.
Additionally, an untitled Illumination film has moved from March 19, 2027 to June 30, 2027 (the previous “Minions 3” date).
“Shrek 5” sees Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz returning to their iconic roles. The movie will release as part of the franchise’s 25th anniversary. The new movie will be directed by the previously announced Walt Dohrn and the newly announced Conrad Vernon, both veterans of the franchise. Dohrn worked on the second and third “Shrek” films as a writer and on the fourth film as head of story.

Mike Myers says you can’t just make a catchphrase happen. “I’ve never designed a catchphrase. I just like how people talk,” Myers told Vulture late last year. “Remember ‘Get in my belly?’ That was improv. It wasn’t, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, my next catchphrase.’”
But Jaleel White says the producers of Family Matters were intent on creating a signature slogan for his Urkel character. “They tried a million darn catchphrases,” he told Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle on the Pod Meets World podcast, per People.
It took a while to get to “Did I do that?” White said — and some of the early stabs were pretty lame. “The first one that they ever tried really was Steve would just bump into inanimate objects — an end table or a lamp, knock it over and say, ‘Excuse me.’ That was it.”
Er, easy to see why that one didn’t catch on.

“Through the night they were moving up, nosing in, understanding that he was gone. They grieved,” Jenny Kiratli, Perry’s handler, told Palo Alto Online of April’s and Buddy’s reaction to their friend’s passing.
Perry had resided at Bol Park in Palo Alto since 1997. As the story goes, one of the original animators from Shrek lived near the pasture and used Perry as the model for the Donkey character famously voiced by Eddie Murphy in the franchise.

“Saturday Night Live” legend Mike Myers wasn’t always the totally excellent leading man he is today.
On a recent episode of Vulture’s “Good One” podcast (via EW), Myers explained that when he first joined the prolific late-night sketch show, he was “scared shitless” after seeing the talent of his fellow cast members.
“When I got to ‘Saturday Night Live’ and saw how fucking good these guys were, I was scared shitless. I had an anxiety attack,” Myers said.
Myers went on to name which castmates he admired most: “Phil Hartman. I mean, Dana Carvey. [Kevin] Nealon, Jan Hooks, who I also worship. You know, it was unbelievable.”

Three Dr. Seuss adaptations are dominating a major streaming chart, even though two of them are based on the same book. Dr. Seuss, which is the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, is an iconic children's book author and illustrator. Some of his most well-known works are 1954's Horton Hears a Who!, 1957's The Cat in the Hat, 1960's One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, 1960's Green Eggs and Ham, 1965's Fox in Socks, and many more. His work usually includes fantastical designs for unusual characters, creatures, and worlds.
Over the years, many Dr. Seuss movies have made it to the screen. A few of his works have been adapted into live-action blockbusters, including the Mike Myers-led The Cat in the Hat, which debuted in 2003. However, it is much more common for his work to be adapted into animated specials or features such as 2008's Horton Hears a Who,...
