Robert Downey Sr. Explains Why No One Wanted ‘Putney Swope’ — Watch

Robert Downey Sr. Explains Why No One Wanted ‘Putney Swope’ — Watch
The late Robert Downey spoke with veteran distributor-turned-director Ira Deutchman for his upcoming documentary “Searching for Mr. Rugoff.” The film is the story of Don Rugoff, owner of theater chain and distributor Cinema 5. Rugoff was key to the careers of many filmmakers, including Costa-Gavras, Lina Wertmuller, and Downey, who speaks here about how Rugoff swooped in to buy “Putney Swope” when no one else would touch the low-budget satire of Madison Avenue advertising agencies.

“I don’t understand it, but I like it,” Rugoff told Downey. Aided by an extraordinary marketing and ad campaign still remembered today, “Putney Swope” became the rare American independent film to be treated like a top foreign-language art film.

Among Downey Sr.’s early micro-budget directorial efforts were “Balls Bluff” (1961), “Babo 73” (1964), “Chafed Elbows” (1966), and “No More Excuses” (1968). The director was also an actor, with performing credits in films such as “Boogie Nights” (1997), “Magnolia” (1999), and

Robert Downey Sr. Dies, Director, Actor and Father of Robert Downey Jr. Was 85
Sad news to report, as Robert Downey Sr. died in his sleep at his NYC home after a battle with Parkinson's Disease, according to his wife. He has left a legacy that spans many careers and helped lead the Absurdist movement, basement budget, independent films, coming of age in counterculture anti-establishment 1960s America.

His work in the late 1960s and 1970s was classic anti-establishment, echoing the nonconformity promoted by larger counterculture movements which led to new freedoms, including the breakdown of codes on censorship. His 1970s films were independently made on shoestring budgets and were relatively obscure in the Absurdist movement.

One of his first underground films, Ball's Bluff, a fantasy short about a Civil War soldier who awakens in Central Park in 1961, put him on the map. He moved into big-budget filmmaking with the surrealistic Greaser's Palace. His most recent film was Rittenhouse Square, a documentary capturing life in a Philadelphia park.

Little Sympathy In Hollywood As Derek Chauvin Is Sentenced To 22 Years In Prison; See The Reactions

Little Sympathy In Hollywood As Derek Chauvin Is Sentenced To 22 Years In Prison; See The Reactions
Former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted in April on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the 2020 murder of George Floyd, was sentenced on Friday to 22 years in prison.

The sentencing came after the judge rejected the disgraced officer’s motion for a new trial on Friday. Prosecutors asked for a 30-year sentence. Chauvin, 45, will likely serve 15 years of that, according to CNN.

Reaction in Hollywood was swift. There were a wide range of responses — everyone from Ava DuVernay to Piers Morgan — but there was little sympathy for Derek Chauvin.

Duvernay wrote four lines of text, each of them emphasizing that “Derek Chauvin is a murderer.”

Joe Biden Says Derek Chauvin’s Sentence Seems “Appropriate”

Director/writer/producer Victoria Mahoney called the 22.5 year sentence, “a joke,” before asking, “And what’s the .5 for?”

Morgan said he hopes Chauvin will “rot in jail.”

Desus & Mero And Ziwe Are Pulling Late-Night And Sketch Comedy Into The 21st Century

Desus & Mero And Ziwe Are Pulling Late-Night And Sketch Comedy Into The 21st Century
Late-night television hasn’t changed a great deal since Johnny Carson took over The Tonight Show nearly 60 years ago. There’s been the odd exception, such as Arsenio Hall’s syndicated show finding a young audience and bringing Bill Clinton’s saxophone licks to the country, or Joan Rivers briefly interloping on Fox. However, it’s largely been the preserve of middle-aged white men, wearing suits, joking about the events of the day with a few celebrity guests and sketches thrown in.

Enter Desus & Mero, and more recently their protégée Ziwe.

Desus & Mero, otherwise known as Desus Nice and The Kid Mero (or Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez), have brought a louder, more youth-skewing, social media-friendly take to the genre, a gonzo, weed-smoking sensibility with fresh kicks.

First breaking through via online brand Complex and their Bodega Boys podcast, before scoring a series on Viceland, which ran for over
