Emmys 2018: Special Events Yield New ‘Apples to Apples Competition’ Rules

Emmys 2018: Special Events Yield New ‘Apples to Apples Competition’ Rules
Live television events, such as award shows or concerts featuring Jennifer Lopez or John Legend ripping up the stage, can make a TV audience feel like they’re sitting in the front row. But are they the same thing as a taped show of a comic standing at the mic? The Emmys don’t think so, which is why they’ve reorganized the previously murky variety special class categories into variety special (live) and variety special (pre-recorded).

“[Now] it’s a more apples-to-apples competition, with live-to-air variety specials in one category and live-to-tape variety specials in another,” says John Leverence, senior

TV Ratings: ‘Shades of Blue’ Season 3 Opens at Series Low

The third and final season of NBC’s “Shades of Blue” hit a new series low in its premiere on Sunday night.

Airing at 10 p.m., “Shades of Blue’s” Season 3 opener averaged a 0.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.5 million viewers. That is down nearly 40% in the demo and just over 30% in total viewers from the Season 2 premiere. In fairness, Season 2 debuted in the spring of last year, when more people are typically watching TV. Still, in addition to hitting a new series low, the Jennifer Lopez-led cop drama finished second in its timeslot against ABC’s “To Tell the Truth.

Ratings: J Lo’s ‘Shades of Blue’ Season 3 Starts Quietly, NBC Settles for Second
There’s no gray area about it: “Shades of Blue” didn’t perform very well with its Season 3 premiere on Sunday.

The NBC cop drama, starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, just slipped 40 percent in ratings from its sophomore start. To be fair, back then, “Shades of Blue” was paired with a better lead-in, the time slot debut of “Chicago Justice.”

ABC finished first again last night with its run of summer game shows.

Quick change duo Sixto & Lucia switch outfits in record time on ‘America’s Got Talent’ audition
Quick change duo Sixto & Lucia turned their June 12 audition on “America’s Got Talent” into a couples couselling session. When the pair revealed that they still worked together but were no longer a romantic item, the two women on the judging panel were having none of it. After watching them perform, Heidi Klum and Mel B each declared that Sixto was still in love with Lucia and wanted her back. (Watch their audition video above.)

While sparks may fly as they get in and out of their outfits, their relationship is also combustible it seems. The pair exchanged a bit of banter before launching into their routine. The capper of their audition was having host Tyra Banks appear through a puff of smoke in a new outfit.
