‘How to Talk to Girls at Parties’ Film Review: Punks Meet Aliens in Messy Mash-Up

‘How to Talk to Girls at Parties’ Film Review: Punks Meet Aliens in Messy Mash-Up
There are a number of small pleasures to be found in John Cameron Mitchell’s “How to Talk to Girls at Parties,” a stylish genre mash-up that’s oddly too messy and too prim at the same time. A clash between “Starman” and “The Clash” with a healthy side of “Rocky Horror,” the film sets a gang of young punks against a cabal of antiseptic aliens in grungy late ’70s London. It comes off feeling more like promising studio outtake than a polished final track.

It’s 1977, punk reigns supreme, and Enn (Alex Sharp) has just ended up at a party full of aliens. They don’t look like ETs – having assumed human forms and all that — but they sure do act the part, engaging in strange rituals, dressing in space-age latex and preparing for a bizarre ceremony.

One of the them, Zan (Elle Fanning doing a kind of manic-alien-dream-girl

Aquaman promo image offers a peek at the revamped costume

Previous rumours have suggested that we’ll be getting a more “classic” looking Aquaman costume in the James Wan-directed superhero blockbuster, and from the above image it certainly seems like we’re getting more orange than we saw in last year’s Justice League. Hopefully we’ll get a better look soon with the release of a trailer.

Movistar + Moves Into Original Film With Alejandro Amenábar’s Next Project (Exclusive)

Movistar +, the high-flying pay-tv division of Telefonica, one of Europe’s biggest telecoms, is powering into original film production with a project by Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar (“The Others”).

The move is aimed at driving up subscriptions at Telefonica’s mobile and fiber-optic services in the Spanish-speaking world. But it also marks a potential milestone in the Spanish-language movie industry as Movistar + takes the lead on productions of big films that few other companies have the money or commercial logic to create.

Movistar +’s original films could prove catnip for Hollywood, which has seen big Spanish-language titles backed by broadcast networks Mediaset España and Atresmedia sometimes outearn Hollywood studio releases in Spain.

Movistar +’s inaugural film is “Mientras dure la guerra” by Amenábar, who directed “The Others” with Nicole Kidman, “Agora” with Rachel Weisz, and Oscar-winning “The Sea Inside” with Javier Bardem. Amenábar’s last movie in Spanish was

Aquaman’s New Armor Revealed Via Promo Art

Having effectively shared, and occasionally stolen, the spotlight from his on-screen superiors in Justice League, Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry will finally lead his own movie when Aquaman hits theaters later this year.

Unfortunately, though, we’ve yet to see a trailer for the James Wan-directed superhero flick. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who will be portraying villain Black Manta in the film, recently commented on the absence of it. He wouldn’t give us much, however, as when asked why he can’t, at the very least, tell us when the preview will drop, the actor playfully responded, “it would Ruin Everything…So… No. I won’t tell you.”

So, while we wait for the elusive first footage of Aquaman to surface, Warner Bros. has now revealed a new look at Jason Momoa as the titular superhero. The promo art on display at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas depicts

Box Office Preview: ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ to Blast Off to Huge Holiday Weekend

Box Office Preview: ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ to Blast Off to Huge Holiday Weekend
For the first time in weeks, superheroes won’t wear the crown at the domestic box office.

Solo: A Star Wars Story” is looking to lift off with $130 million to $150 million at 4,380 locations over Memorial Day weekend. While that is down significantly from tracking earlier in May that suggested the film would open between $165 million and $175 million, some are still projecting the “Star Wars” prequel could make as much as $180 million over the four-day holiday weekend.

The film follows Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, who befriends his future co-pilot and Wookie companion Chewbacca, and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover). Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Paul Bettany, Joonas Suotamo, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge round out the cast.

Ron Howard directed from a screenplay by Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan. Howard replaced the directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who left the project in June of 2017, citing “creative differences.

Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise Are Twinning in Matching Outfits at the Abt Spring Gala

She is getting so big! Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri Cruise are quite the mother-daughter duo, but the actress has made it a point to limit her little girl's time in the spotlight to only certain occassions — and lucky for us, this was one of those occasions. On Monday, May 21, Katie and Suri made a rare public outing together to the American Ballet Theatre Spring Gala at the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC and they both stepped out in matching floral ensembles. Watch the video above to see the latest picutures of Suri and Katie! So cute. Even though Katie did not share any photos featuring Suri from that night on Instagram, she shared a few snaps of her with pals and fans cannot get over how much Suri looks like her mom. "Omg! This is exactly Suri in 30 years," one fan wrote. Even though Suri is the daughter

How many Oscar filmmakers will invade the 2018 Emmys? Lonergan and Fincher and Boyle – oh my!

How many Oscar filmmakers will invade the 2018 Emmys? Lonergan and Fincher and Boyle – oh my!
Emmy voters often love Oscar winning movie stars like Nicole Kidman (“Big Little Lies”), Jessica Lange (“American Horror Story”), and many more. And this year could see more Oscar champs claim TV’s biggest prize, including Al Pacino (“Paterno”) and Penelope Cruz (“The Assassination of Gianni Versace”). But as television programming continues to expand with cable and streaming the small screen has become a playground for Oscar favorites behind the camera as well. So how many this year will make the cut?

David Fincher has been nominated for two Oscars for Best Director (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Social Network”), and he’s already an Emmy winner for directing the premiere episode of “House of Cards.” But while that political drama sits out this Emmy cycle (its sixth and final season won’t premiere until later this year), Fincher has another Netflix series in the running: “Mindhunter,

'How to Talk to Girls at Parties': When Horny Punks Met Alien Sex Fiends
Earth, 1977: England's dreaming, London's burning, and punk is raging as the U.K.'s youth culture du jour. Enn (Alex Sharp) spends his days writing and drawing his zine – titled Virys, because punk! – and giving polite society the two-fingered salute. At night, he and his knuckleheaded buddies hit up warehouse spaces to see first-wave bands like the Dyschords play their two-chords-and-the-truth anthems; the scene is run by elder stateswoman Queen Boadicea (viva Nicole Kidman!), who is inspiring the kids to fly their freak flags Asap and, apparently, will one

Cannes 2018: Big Movies Soar, as Independent Movie Market Contracts

Cannes 2018: Big Movies Soar, as Independent Movie Market Contracts
Seeing worldwide sales sell-outs on Jessica Chastain’s “355,” and Benedict Cumberbatch’s “Ironbark,” from FilmNation, plus Studiocanal’s “The Secret Garden,” the 2018 Cannes Film Festival market proved the second big international market in a row to buck, though only in part, longterm industry pessimism.

After glacial-paced early trading, titles sold from Cannes’ first weekend both to the U.S. and abroad at a steady, though never spectacular, rate.

But if Cannes, like February’s surprisingly buoyant Berlinale, suggested there is still life in the international independent film business, despite a tepid Sundance and dire American Film Market, it also delivered a sobering snapshot of new theatrical market realities.

Whichever way the 2018 Cannes Film Market is taken, heartening signs of continued market traction have to be placed in a context of a longer term attrition in the independent theatrical market affecting many mid-sized English-language movies and arthouse titles alike.

Cannes Film Market ‘Healthy’ as New Players Fill Streaming Giant Void

Predictions of the Marche du Film’s death were greatly exaggerated. While indie film prices have come back to earth after big-spending streaming giants rattled the ecosystem a few years back, industry players told TheWrap, the market at Cannes was buzzing this year from start to finish.

“A lot of times, people associate activity with the big players spending a lot of money and buying movies for big price tags,” Saban Films President Bill Bromiley told TheWrap from France on Friday.

“That can be a little misleading,” said the executive, whose company brought home five films — more than any other distributor to visit the festival this year.
