‘Dietland’: Marti Noxon on the Revolutionary Show’s ‘Wizard of Oz’-Inspired Sexy Tiger Man
[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for “Dietland” Season 1, Episode 3, “Y Not.”]

When IndieWire first spoke to “Dietland” creator Marti Noxon about her new AMC dark comedy, she mentioned a number of influences on the show. But while the premise has elicited more than one comparison to a lady version of “Fight Club,” Noxon’s go-to inspiration was “The Wizard of Oz,” specifically in how it visually represented the journey of self-discovery for Plum (Joy Nash).

“When I kept talking about visual references, I was like, I don’t want it to be one of these gray shows,” she said. “I don’t want it to be all blue saturated. I want it to be like a technicolor. It has a kind of musical quality. There are drab places, but then there are these other places that are just hyper-colored. Plum starts in kind of Kansas, but where she ends up should be over the rainbow. It should be colorful,

TV Review: 72nd Annual Tony Awards

TV Review: 72nd Annual Tony Awards
This year’s Tony Awards seemed to address the times in which we live with a certain amount of urgency, as all awards shows have done over the course of the Trump era. But give the theater types this: They did their job with a surprising amount of subtlety, with a show that assuaged the wounds of a uniquely divisive time with a whisper, even though we knew they could carry off a belt.

Consider the studiously low-fi opening number, in which hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles dedicated their time to those who wouldn’t win—as, after all,

Liza Minnelli Might See 'A Star Is Born' Since Lady Gaga Is In It
Liza Minnelli typically slams or boycotts movies associated with her mom, but Lady Gaga's role in "A Star Is Born" could totally change Minnelli's mindset ... TMZ has learned. Sources close to Liza tell us she absolutely adores Gaga, and it's likely she'll actually go and see the singer play the role her mother, Judy Garland, once filled. If you didn't know -- and if you're under 55, that's likely -- Judy starred in the 1954 version of the movie.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘A Star Is Born’ will dominate the Golden Globes based on this trailer

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘A Star Is Born’ will dominate the Golden Globes based on this trailer
Apologies to all comedies and musicals and comedy/musicals coming out this year, but we’ve (probably) seen our Golden Globe winner: “A Star Is Born.” Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for the remake Wednesday, which finds Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper making beautiful music together with a country twist.

Making his directorial debut, Cooper also plays Jackson Maine, a country crooner who takes Ally (Gaga), a struggling artist, under his wing. They fall in love, she becomes a star, while his star wanes. It’s a timeless story. The whiskey-soaked trailer features a de-glammed, brunette Gaga, a super-tan, bearded Cooper, and a ton of catchy new songs. It’s right up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s alley.

Movie Business Weighs Ways to Reach Out to Women in Europe

Movie Business Weighs Ways to Reach Out to Women in Europe
Three of last year’s biggest global hits — “Wonder Woman,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Beauty and the Beast” — demonstrated the biz potential of tentpole movies with strong female leads. CineEurope, the upcoming gathering of the European movie theater sector, will debate ways to keep engaging the female audience at the box office this summer and beyond.

Women want female characters in films who are more than just “eye candy,” says Laura Houlgatte, CEO of Unic, a body that represents exhibition companies in Europe. The success of films like “Wonder Woman” sent a signal to the biz that films with strong female protagonists “can increase your returns,” she says, and that such movies are not just for women, but men, too.

Eric Meyniel concurs. “When you hook the female audience, you also hook the male audience, too, because they come with their [male] friends, husbands or boyfriends,” says Meyniel, international content director at exhibitor Kinepolis,

A star has been born, yet again.
