Dorothea enlists the help of two women -- Abbie, a free-spirited punk artist and Julie, a savvy teenager -- to help with Jamie's upbringing.IMDb: Your film Jimpa has some wonderful themes of family and generational love. Are there films which the two of you have shared with one another which you may not have discovered otherwise?
Sophie: Gosh, I mean I always talk about 20th Century Women.
Aud: I was about to say the same thing.
Sophie: I think you saw that only recently, didn’t you?
Aud: No, you showed it to me, so it still counts. It’s one of our favorite films, and probably is partly an inspiration for this. It’s one of my favorite films still.
Sophie: And I think that one’s a generational film, too. You don’t have that many – it can be quite a hard thing to see. I couldn’t see that onscreen very often. - DirectorMike MillsStarsEwan McGregorChristopher PlummerMélanie LaurentOliver, a graphic designer, is attracted to a free-spirited and unpredictable Anna. Memories of his father encourage him to open himself up to the potential of a true and long-lasting relationship.Aud: But you know one that we talk about a lot is Beginners.
Sophie: Yeah Beginners, of course – so, Mike Mills...because I think Mike does that thing of speaking about family in a really interesting way, and family being your biological family and your sort of extended family of people that you’ve chosen. And I think he has a really interesting take on character as well. So those were really important to us in this. - DirectorRyûsuke HamaguchiStarsHidetoshi NishijimaTôko MiuraReika KirishimaA renowned stage actor and director learns to cope with a big personal loss when he receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya in Hiroshima.Aud: I don’t think we talked about this for the film, but we both saw together Drive My Car and loved it so much. And then there was a point in the making of this where we saw we made something...not similar—because it’s not at all— but there’s something in it that feels sort of similar.
Sophie: There were so many elements of Drive My Car that I just loved. It went to new places and [speaks to] the process of making a piece of theater, I suppose — and we had been in the process of making film.
Aud: I feel like I’ve gotten such a wonderful film education from you in my life. So many great films shown to me by my filmmaker parents. - DirectorsMaryam MoghadamBehtash SanaeehaStarsLili FarhadpourEsmaeel MehrabiMansoore IlkhaniSeventy-year-old Mahin, solitary until now, chooses to revive her love life. Aud: Oh, it was My Favourite Cake, that Iranian film. It’s so beautiful. It’s just beat for beat perfect. It’s so particular, and you believe it and you want to be there. I love that film — and you still haven’t seen it! She’s bad. - DirectorRob ReinerStarsWil WheatonRiver PhoenixCorey FeldmanA writer recounts a childhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy.Sophie: One of the things about raising a child is reintroducing films that you’ve loved to them. So, for me, re-showing Aud Stand By Me or Dead Poets Society, which we both love. The Miyazaki films are so exciting when you have a child.
