1. What Josiah Saw (2021)

120 min | Horror, Thriller

70 Metascore

A family with buried secrets reunite at a farmhouse after two decades to pay for their past sins.

Director: Vincent Grashaw | Stars: Robert Patrick, Nick Stahl, Scott Haze, Kelli Garner

Votes: 4,213

Exceptional multi-genre film. Absolutely not what I had expected, and all the better for it! Top-tier work from all involved; acting, directing, cinematography, writing, sound, etc.

It very much has the feel of a Tarantino or Coen brothers film, but mashed together with a modern "elevated" horror movie. It's very drama-led and has some wild tonal shifts, so be prepared for a slow, character-driven film that may be too light on horror for some.

2. The Innocents (2021)

Not Rated | 117 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

79 Metascore

During the bright Nordic summer, a group of children reveal their dark and mysterious powers when the adults aren't looking. In this original and gripping supernatural thriller, playtime takes a dangerous turn.

Director: Eskil Vogt | Stars: Rakel Lenora Petersen Fløttum, Alva Brynsmo Ramstad, Sam Ashraf, Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim

Votes: 24,806

A brilliant drama that plays out a bit like the 'X-Men', except with kids, and in a realistic way.

It has a gentle pace, but is never boring. Great acting, especially from the young cast, and very good production values. An exceptionally well made film that demands a viewing.

Warning: Some scenes are very hard to watch. There's a scene featuring animal cruelty which I found mortifying, I imagine some folks would switch the film off at that point, as I nearly did.

3. Resurrection (2022)

R | 103 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

70 Metascore

Margaret's life is in order. She is capable, disciplined and successful. Everything is under control until David returns - that is - carrying with him the horrors of Margaret's past.

Director: Andrew Semans | Stars: Rebecca Hall, Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman, Michael Esper

Votes: 11,818

A slow-burning psychological drama. Absolutely harrowing and impeccably acted. Some have found it too slow, but it had me on the edge of my seat throughout! It's pretty heavy going tho, the main themes are psychological trauma and extreme gaslighting, it's definitely not a "good time".

4. Pearl (2022)

R | 103 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

76 Metascore

In 1918, a young woman on the brink of madness pursues stardom in a desperate attempt to escape the drudgery, isolation, and lovelessness of life on her parents' farm.

Director: Ti West | Stars: Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland

Votes: 96,910 | Gross: $9.42M

Fantastic drama-horror hybrid with a superb aesthetic and a blinding lead performance by Mia Goth. Won't be for everyone, but I thought it was great!

I actually preferred this to 'X', to which this film is the prequel.

5. The Menu (2022)

R | 107 min | Comedy, Horror, Thriller

71 Metascore

A young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.

Director: Mark Mylod | Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau

Votes: 392,701 | Gross: $38.50M

Absolutely loved this film! It's more of a mystery-thriller with some horror elements than a straight-forward horror flick, so you may want to adjust your expectations accordingly.

Excellent cast, unique premise and great production values!

6. Sissy (I) (2022)

Not Rated | 102 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror

67 Metascore

Teen best friends Cecilia and Emma, run into each other after a decade. Cecilia is invited to Emma's bachelorette weekend where she gets stuck in a remote cabin with her high school bully and a taste for revenge.

Directors: Hannah Barlow, Kane Senes | Stars: Aisha Dee, Hannah Barlow, Emily De Margheriti, Daniel Monks

Votes: 7,634

Really good Aussie thriller (or it may be from New Zealand, I can't remember off the top of my head - apologies!) that's very similar to Pearl, also released in 2022. Very violent with a sharp sense of humour. Top stuff!

If you liked Pearl, you'll really like this, too!

7. Soft & Quiet (2022)

R | 92 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

82 Metascore

Playing out in real time, an elementary school teacher organizes a mixer of like-minded women, when she encounters a woman from her past, leading to a volatile chain of events.

Director: Beth de Araújo | Stars: Stefanie Estes, Olivia Luccardi, Dana Millican, Melissa Paulo

Votes: 10,187

Uncomfortable viewing, and quite horrifying.

This is a home invasion thriller that's done in a 'cinema verite' style, which is quite refreshing and makes the film incredibly engrossing and shocking. It definitely stays with you after watching...

Note: This is an extreme 'thriller', and although it's quite horrifying, I wouldn't really class it as a 'horror' film, personally. Just FYI.

8. Barbarian (2022)

R | 102 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

78 Metascore

A woman staying at an Airbnb discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems.

Director: Zach Cregger | Stars: Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, Justin Long, Matthew Patrick Davis

Votes: 180,867

Quality film! Very unexpected, surprising and entertaining. Some good scares, gore and a bit of humour. Also has a few nods to 70's and 80's exploitation flicks, I won't say which ones, you'll know when you see it.

9. X (II) (2022)

R | 105 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

80 Metascore

In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the crew find themselves fighting for their lives.

Director: Ti West | Stars: Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi

Votes: 173,439

Nice slice of 70's exploitation-style weirdness. Leans more towards gross and uncomfortable than scary, so if that's your bag...

Followed in the same year by the prequel 'Pearl'.

10. Prey (I) (2022)

R | 100 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

71 Metascore

Naru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.

Director: Dan Trachtenberg | Stars: Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Stormee Kipp

Votes: 227,340

While it lacks the sweaty claustrophobia of the original 'Predator', this prequel is a huge step in the right direction. One Predator and one "prey", with the prey having to rely on wits and cunning rather than brute-force to survive. That's what a Predator film should be, and the makers of this film understand that ...it only took 30 years for someone to get it right!

It loses some points due to some really obvious CGI, and there's lots of it.

11. A Wounded Fawn (2022)

TV-MA | 91 min | Horror

75 Metascore

A serial killer brings an unsuspecting new victim on a weekend getaway to add another body to his ever-growing count. She's buying into his faux charms, and he's eagerly lusting for blood. What could possibly go wrong?

Director: Travis Stevens | Stars: Sarah Lind, Josh Ruben, Malin Barr, Katie Kuang

Votes: 3,199

Another wonderfully off-kilter horror film that starts in one place and ends up somewhere completely different! Weird, funny and with a very nice 70's aesthetic, as well.

Some have bemoaned the huge tonal shift that occurs, preferring the more grounded first act to what comes next, but I swung the other way. Regardless, this is not your average horror movie, so be prepared for something a little different!

Note: This really needed / needs to have a 'comedy' tag. While not exactly 'Zoolander' it really does have lots of genuinely amusing moments.

12. Nope (2022)

R | 130 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

77 Metascore

The residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.

Director: Jordan Peele | Stars: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Brandon Perea, Michael Wincott

Votes: 266,242 | Gross: $123.28M

An entertaining, light-hearted, sci-fi mystery film with a dash of horror. Solid film, very 'Twilight Zone'. Recommended!

13. Mad God (2021)

Unrated | 83 min | Animation, Fantasy, Horror

80 Metascore

The Assassin travels through a nightmare underworld of tortured souls, ruined cities and wretched monstrosities forged from the primordial horrors of the unconscious mind of Phil Tippett, the world's preeminent stop-motion animator.

Director: Phil Tippett | Stars: Alex Cox, Niketa Roman, Satish Ratakonda, Harper Taylor

Votes: 14,736

14. Speak No Evil (2022)

Not Rated | 97 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

78 Metascore

A Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.

Director: Christian Tafdrup | Stars: Morten Burian, Sidsel Siem Koch, Fedja van Huêt, Karina Smulders

Votes: 38,939

Excellent thriller with a very disturbing climax. Not exactly a barrel of laughs, but a very well-made film.

Some complain the two main characters don't react to their situation(s) in a realistic way, but speaking as a European, this is very accurate to the social-etiquette of some European cultures. Extreme politeness, even in very uncomfortable and unpleasant situations, is a trait that is seen as noble and should be adhered to at all times. This film obviously takes that to the extreme (and beyond), but that's the point. At least that's what I took away from it...

15. Fresh (2022)

R | 114 min | Horror, Thriller

67 Metascore

After quitting dating apps, a woman meets the supposedly perfect man and accepts his invitation to a romantic weekend getaway, only to find that her new paramour has been hiding some unusual appetites.

Director: Mimi Cave | Stars: Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sebastian Stan, Jojo T. Gibbs, Andrea Bang

Votes: 74,252

Really good cannibalism film. A good watch if you can "stomach" it!

16. Piggy (2022)

Not Rated | 99 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

72 Metascore

An overweight teen is bullied by a clique of cool girls poolside while holidaying in her village. The long walk home will change the rest of her life.

Director: Carlota Pereda | Stars: Laura Galán, Richard Holmes, Carmen Machi, Irene Ferreiro

Votes: 12,995

Drama-thriller-horror hybrid.

Interesting mix of elements that make for a refreshing thriller. Think of Carrie without any supernatural elements and you'll be close to Piggy.

If you can, choose the subtitled version with original Spanish audio, the English dubbing is really, really bad.

17. Deadstream (2022)

Not Rated | 87 min | Comedy, Horror

67 Metascore

A disgraced internet personality attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally pisses off a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.

Directors: Joseph Winter, Vanessa Winter | Stars: Joseph Winter, Melanie Stone, Jason K. Wixom, Pat Barnett

Votes: 17,530

Fun film! Found footage horror mixed with The Evil Dead. A few unexpected scares and lots of goofy monsters, all played for laughs.

The humour was a bit irritating at first, but the more I watched the more I warmed to the lead character and the films style of humour.

18. Family Dinner (I) (2022)

97 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

An overweight teenager spends the holidays at her aunt's farm in the hope of getting help to lose weight, but soon after her arrival, she begins to suspect that something is very wrong at this place.

Director: Peter Hengl | Stars: Pia Hierzegger, Michael Pink, Nina Katlein, Alexander Sladek

Votes: 1,207

Well made drama-thriller that's unique enough to stand out in it's sub-genre of horror films.

19. You Won't Be Alone (2022)

82 Metascore

Directors: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead | Stars: Aaron Moorhead, Justin Benson, Sarah Adina Smith, Wanjiru M. Njendu

Votes: 5,277

Quirky sci-fi film with very little horror. Works well as a character-driven drama, as the sci-fi stuff is more window dressing, and the horror is not really there at all.

A very decent watch if you like oddball indie flicks, tho!

23. Hatching (2022)

91 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

75 Metascore

Director: Scott Derrickson | Stars: Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Davies

Votes: 194,499 | Gross: $90.12M

Decent supernatural-mystery. I enjoyed it well enough, despite it feeling overly familiar. However, Ethen Hawk's 'Joker' impersonation of a performance was far too over-the-top for my liking, I really couldn't take the film seriously due to that.

Everyone else seems to love it tho, so enjoy!

27. Titane (2021)

Director: Parker Finn | Stars: Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert

Votes: 161,499

Extremely well made, with superb cinematography and an exceptional musical score. It starts very well, and there's (lots of) quality jump scares, but the quality starts to dip by the halfway point. It becomes pretty formulaic and sometimes unintentionally hilarious. Wearing the skin of "depth" by touching upon childhood trauma is getting old, also. Do it properly or don't bother, in my opinion.

Still, it's worth a watch and it really does have some creepy moments, just don't expect a classic.

30. The Blackening (2022)

Votes: 40,733

Decent slice of "classic" Cronenberg. A great premise and cast, somewhat hampered by what seems to be a very low budget.

It's worth a watch if you like old-school David Cronenberg, but if weird body-horror and musings about transhumanism aren't you thing, then you may want to skip it.

36. Hellbender (2021)

86 min | Horror

70 Metascore

A lonely teen discovers her family's ties to witchcraft.

Directors: John Adams, Zelda Adams, Toby Poser | Stars: Zelda Adams, Toby Poser, Lulu Adams, John Adams

Votes: 6,615

Coming-of-age drama with a dark, witchy twist. Very good effort for such a small team with a limited budget, these guys are worth keeping an eye on. I'm hoping they get a bigger budget to play with for their next project, they deserve it!

May not be your cup of tea if you're not into character-driven indie horror, but I enjoyed it!

37. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

R | 94 min | Comedy, Horror, Mystery

69 Metascore

When a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game turns deadly in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong.

Director: Halina Reijn | Stars: Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha'la, Rachel Sennott

Votes: 68,428

Clever and well-made, but holy moly, the characters are so unlikable and irritating it's almost unpleasant to watch! Looking back after watching the whole film, it's pretty funny, but I don't think I'll ever want to watch it again, it's just too much of an ordeal to be in the presence of these characters!

Director: David Bruckner | Stars: Odessa A'zion, Jamie Clayton, Adam Faison, Drew Starkey

Votes: 48,811

An imperfect but still welcome "reinvigoration" of the Hellraiser franchise.

There's no denying it has terribly written characters, unbearable dialogue, and is wrapped up in an outdated, slasher-style "set-up, kill set-piece, exposition, repeat..." formula. With some better writers this could have been great, as the visuals, atmosphere (on occasion), body horror and Cenobites are very well done. For that alone it's hard to deny it's worth a watch!

More of the surreal, cosmic, deviant, mind-bending madness and less generic slasher cheese next time please!

Director: William Brent Bell | Stars: Isabelle Fuhrman, Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, Hiro Kanagawa

Votes: 46,317

Serviceable prequel.

To address the elephant in the room; yes, the lead actress is now 23 and playing someone who is supposed to look about 10. It's bizarre and very silly, but it does add some extra entertainment value!

The film itself is a perfectly average slice of dumb popcorn-fodder. It's not very good, but I was entertained throughout. There's a surprisingly good twist to kick off the second act, and the actors play their roles well, really hamming it up!

Is it a good prequel? Not really. Is it a good film? Not really. Is it fun? Yeah.

47. No Exit (I) (2022)

Passible, no-frills mystery-thriller that's just on the right side of average.

48. Men (2022)

R | 100 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

65 Metascore

A young woman goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside following the death of her ex-husband.

Director: Alex Garland | Stars: Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu, Gayle Rankin

Votes: 63,326

Big fan of Alex Garland, but this just missed the mark for me.

Some of the ideas and concepts at play here are fantastic, but the film as a whole just didn't come together for me. Lots of great ideas stitched together almost randomly into a Frankenstein's monster-style tapestry. Uneven tone, heavy-handed delivery. Very interesting film tho, gotta give it that!

49. White Noise (I) (2022)

R | 136 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror

66 Metascore

Dramatizes a contemporary American family's attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.

Director: Noah Baumbach | Stars: Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, Madison Gaughan

Votes: 44,563

Very odd, and not necessarily in the best kind of way. An uneasy mix of genres that don't ever seem to come together in the way I think they were intended to. My main bugbear is the very strange, overly scripted dialogue that I assume is supposed to be sharp and / or witty, but is just a bit irritating.

It's unique, so I think it warrants a cautious recommendation for that alone, but there's very little horror on offer here, and what is on offer is only going to appeal to a niche audience.

A cautious recommendation.

50. Glorious (2022)

79 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

60 Metascore

Director: Rebekah McKendry | Stars: Ryan Kwanten, J.K. Simmons, Sylvia Grace Crim, André Lamar

Votes: 7,208

Passible Lovecraftian horror-comedy. A novel concept that falters due to lots of awkward comedy and a lead that seems a bit lost.

A cautious recommendation.

Solid enough, but so generic it's like a waft of beige smoke; it's there momentarily, but it's pretty uninteresting, and then it evaporates.

Maybe it's more of a thing for young adults?

A cautious recommendation.
