Turner predicted, “Lesbians are gonna haaaate this movie. This is a woman who’s been a lesbian her whole life, and stops being a lesbian to be with a man. They’re going to crucify it.” As it turns out, many did, but some did not. Turner continues, “I was so wrong! A lot of lesbians I know really loved the movie. I remember being embarrassed, like I didn’t know my own community.” She now describes Chasing Amy as not “even a lesbian movie, but it has a lesbian in it with a complicated sexuality. That had literally never been done before in any movie anyone had ever seen.”

By the end of this interesting read, Keating appears to agree with Turner:

Perhaps Chasing Amy was actually about bisexuality all along, and the limits of forcing people into binary boxes of attraction when the queer experience can oftentimes be more fluid, and more complicated, than that… Looking back, the ’90s-era debates around Chasing Amy seem like small harbingers of the different sorts of queer conversations to come.

Toda la reseña vale la pena, pero esto es algo bastante importante destacar:

Much has been made in the reviews of the relationship, because it does come across as a psycho-sexual one. I tend to disagree that this is a film about lesbianism – not because I have a problem with Céline and Julie being lesbians, for the same reason I have a problem with the two Maries in Daisies being lesbian – that it may detract from the jouissance and the abundant libidnal economy of the main characters. Look at it this way. Céline and Julie may be loves, but it is the least interesting aspect about them in this film. Here are two individuals exercising their passion for life, a freewheeling engagement with the act of being. this is lessened if they can only do this because they are in love with each other. Its more powerful to have heterosexual women bonding in this fashion outside of the confines of love, than it is to have an implication that lesbianism frees women completely from the bonds of misogyny. A casual scene in which Julie hangs a few dolls on a wall and pins a boy figurine by its feet is a giddy visualization of this, but this theme runs far deeper. Those aforementioned role reversals involve the females rejecting the men who hold some sway on the life of the other. Julie kept a photo of Gregoire with a rose as if a shrine to a lover lost in a battle, so Céline breaks her of the lingering crush by alienating the man. Meanwhile, Julie performs as a magician and ends up castigating the same seedy men who ogled her friend, calling them pimps before storming out of the place. When this occurs, there is a distinct severing from the phallus – everything ‘powerful’ is sublimated. Their jobs and the other confines of ‘normal’ society. Soon it will be reality itself. This is more a statement on capitalism and its use of the phallic order than it is on homosexuality. These women are stepping outside of love as one of the chains that binds women to phallic power.

No soy fan de los musicales, y esta película no es la excepción. La música es rescatable y las canciones son pegajosas, pero lo que debería dejarte pensando es la película, no las canciones por más que sea un musical. No sabía que estaba basada en hechos reales y si bien difiere en mucho con la historia o simplemente no tuvo un enfoque en lo más importante, eso es lo de menos. El punto es que no tuvo ningún enfoque, por eso a medida que pasan las escenas solo se espera que surja otra canción sin congruencia alguna. Como si hubieran hecho la película de un álbum musical, y a menos que este fuera uno bien desarrollado, hasta podría imaginarme una película de 'El Mal Querer' de Rosalía.

  • If you're going to make a musical, the songs have to be memorable. Luckily, The Greatest Showman delivers on that. The music was the film's greatest strength.


  • My guess is that the film did not intend on being historically accurate because it was far from it. Good thing that Hugh Jackman is extremely likable and charismatic, since the real P.T. was not quite as well liked. The onscreen Barnum did right in his need for fame and knack for hoaxes. Most of the circus performers had their quirks enhanced or exaggerated to garner for paid customers. His most controversial, however, was conveniently left off screen. According to sources, P.T. Barnum bought a slave woman to be paraded around and convinced people she was 160 years old. Her autopsy revealed her real age which was about eighty. Barnum may have been a little sketchy.


  • You can love the film, it's just more of a musical than a biopic. After all, Pocahontas is a beloved Disney movie, and that movie is not historically accurate whatsoever. If the film is made well enough, it can take you on a magical journey, even if the facts are wrong. Despite its flaws, The Greatest Showman is still a very enjoyable flick.

I grew up with a lot of men. It was me and nine boys, once you count all my brothers and cousins. My dad, Francis Ford Coppola, was a macho film-maker and his friends were all of that ilk, so I think I really clung to femininity and a kind of girly aesthetic.

When I was in my mid-20s, I came across The Virgin Suicides. I remember seeing the cover – it was just all this blonde hair. I read it and loved it. It felt like Jeffrey Eugenides, the writer, really understood the experience of being a teenager: the longing, the melancholy, the mystery between boys and girls. I loved how the boys were so confused by the girls, and I really connected with all that lazing around in your bedroom. I didn’t feel like I saw that very much in films, not in a way I could relate to.

I never thought I would be a film-maker. It wasn’t something I ever planned, despite the fact I loved hanging around on sets. That’s how I learned to do it. At a young age, I was really into fashion and clothes although I felt frustrated at art school. I had so many interests – design, photography, music – but I just couldn’t find one medium that really clicked for me. Then I made a short film, Lick the Star in 1998, and it brought together all the things I loved.

I made The Virgin Suicides, my first feature-length film, a little later. Although I didn’t realise it at the time, it was personal: when I was 15, my eldest brother Gio died suddenly in a boating accident. This gave me a connection to The Virgin Suicides, which is also about loss. Often, movies about teenagers are dumbed down with cheap photography. There aren’t a lot of quality art films made for young audiences. But I wanted to treat them with respect, to look properly at that deep, emotional time. Because I was still in my 20s, the idea of school wasn’t far away.

We have a family film company, American Zoetrope, so I really had my dad’s support. He encouraged me, really talked to me. He always said the most important thing about a movie is the acting and the writing. Although he wasn’t there on set very much, he really mentored me. When he did visit, he was kind of nervous. He would tell me to shout “Action!” louder so they knew I was in charge. I would say: “But Dad, this is how I do it.”

But the hardest thing about making a movie, something I still find a challenge, is planning all the shots and how they’re going to cut together. A dinner scene is very complicated. I was so stressed about figuring out the one in The Virgin Suicides. You can get carried away and do way too many shots that don’t fit together. Eyelines have to match and you have to be really focused on whose point of view each shot is. It’s like a maths equation.

I couldn’t see myself making the film now. I’m at such a different stage in my life. It’s not what I’m thinking about. But each film builds to the next one. Making my most recent work, The Beguiled, did involve looking back to The Virgin Suicides. Certain elements reminded me of it: girls and women at different stages, but older and dealing more with their desires and the challenges of womanhood. It’s like my life has been bookended by those two films.

John Hughes era el To all the boys i've loved de los 80's, y abrió paso para que en esta década surjan películas como esa. Lo cual no tiene nada de malo, siempre y cuando el contenido sea mínimamente aceptable y no saquen los típicos rom-coms que al ver que tuvieron éxito en las taquillas, decidieron usar la misma fórmula y los mismos chistes malos una y otra vez. Y eso es lo que hizo John Hughes en los 80's. Sin embargo, es entretenido ver cómo eran los adolescentes en esa época o qué era lo que les entretenía ya que de cierta forma se identificaban con estos personajes. Lo mismo que la expresión del súper yo amiga que hay ahora siempre que ven algo que las SÚPER identifica. Y algo más gracioso para comentar es como este guion que fue hecho en dos días, parece como si hubiera sido la excusa perfecta de John Hughes. Hay dos polos para criticarlo: que para haberlo hecho en tan solo dos días fue un buen guion; y por otro, que el guion es tan malo porque tan solo se tomó dos días en hacerlo. Y si esto era lo que buscaba John para justificar el guion de su película desalmada, pues puedo decir que aunque no era un director ni un guionista brillante, sí era un buen estratega, o al menos lo suficiente como para eso.

Mi queja sigue siendo que no sé identificar los elementos que no me gustan en las películas, lo malo de una carrera deficiente en la que ni te enseñan cine. Solo puedo decir que fue un mal intento de ciencia ficción.

  • En ese camino, el protagonista se encontrará con el Anchancho, el Larilari y el Kusillo, además de otros seres de la mitología andina, quienes acompañarán a este joven lustrabotas en su viaje.


  • Esta tarea fue una de las más complicadas para Loayza, ya que si bien los personajes existen en el imaginario colectivo, no existe una iconografía precisa de ellos.


  • “Todos sabemos del Larilari, del Anchancho, pero nunca los hemos visto, nuestras visiones sobre ellos varían por que los hemos ido heredando por la tradición oral, no son como los dragones por ejemplo, que todos saben como se ven, así que este trabajo ha sido más complicado”.


  • “Para ese trabajo hice muchas entrevistas sobre Bolivia. Conversé con un especialista del pensamiento andino, quien tenía mucha información sobre el tema. A partir de ahí nació la necesidad de investigar el mankapacha, que en la lógica aymara viene a ser el mundo de abajo, que no necesariamente es el infierno”, explica Loayza.


El director explica que la confusión entre el mankapacha y el infierno cristiano viene de asuntos no resueltos durante el proceso de sincretismo religioso por el que pasó el mundo andino y que fue aprovechado por los españoles para darle una significación negativa al mundo de debajo de la tierra.

“Fue muy fácil para los religiosos decir que el mankapacha era el infierno y quitarle su verdadero significado y eso es algo que aún no se ha resuelto”, agregó.

A este mundo de abajo -explica el director- se ingresa por varias puertas. “Una de ellas son las serpientes y los sapos, que son símbolos presentes en diversos aspectos de la cultura andina. Otra puerta por la que se puede acceder a este universo es a través del ritual y en éste siempre está presente el alcohol”, explica Loayza, quien en su película se arriesga a construir ese universo plagado de paradojas, persecuciones y personajes de la noche.

Es triste que el ranking de esta película haya decaído o que no haya recibido el reconocimiento que se merecía por las denuncias a James Franco. Me cuesta separar el arte del artista, pero reconozco que hizo una excelente parodia y que revivió al extraño ser de Tom Wiseau al hacer esto.

Este es el mismo problema que tengo con Woody Allen, uno de mis directores favoritos y un comediante muy ingenioso, pero no le quita lo de Soon-Yi.

Se me hace que el personaje de Leslie fue desaprovechado y que era una película con algo de potencial si era bien desarrollado. Hasta cierto punto me hace acuerdo a The house of the Devil, otra película que me gustó bastante pero sentí que le faltó algo, y quizás fue el presupuesto tan reducido lo que hizo que termine siendo de tan mala calidad.

"Maybe it deserved it. No force on Earth could compel me to go back and see it again. It had an effective sense of accumulating horror. I liked it at the time. Since then, I've grown weary of the genre it inspired, the found-footage horror film. In this genre we are given low-quality home video footage, usually underlit, lacking in pacing and intentionally hard to comprehend. The premise is that the footage was taken before some unspeakable event occurred, was discovered later and now is in the film we are watching."

  • Esto fue de una crítica a V/H/S (2012) (está en mi lista de películas que vi el 2017), que es muy cierto, quizás esto de found-footage fue algo que funcionó como en la ya mencionada Paranormal Activity o en The Blair Witch Project -la cual me mantuvo con mucho suspenso y no me olvido de que mencionaron a Bolivia cuando uno de ellos estaba con el pecho descubierto, desviándome del tema...-, pero ya cansa que utilicen la misma fórmula una y otra vez, innecesariamente.

As well as being poorly directed and written, this movie was pretty offensive. I felt like I was watching a propaganda film about the danger of predatory, crazy lesbians. Did Kirk Cameron make this movie? To be fair I couldn't finish it, it was so bad, but let me guess, does the main character finally learn to play that piano piece "avec passion?" Too bad the filmmakers couldn't take all these elements they gathered and make a decent film.

Esto es algo que suele verse en películas que abordan temas lgbt, y es que siempre los proyectan como gente obsesiva, depravada o promiscua. Hay gente así en el colectivo, como también la hay entre los heterosexuales, pero es distinto que se haga esto entre una relación de dos personas del sexo opuesto (de los cuales ya se han hecho miles de películas e historias), a que se haga sobre una comunidad que durante años ha buscado quitarse de encima precisamente eso, etiquetas que en estas películas lo único que hacen es reforzarlas y seguir transmitiéndole un mal mensaje al público, porque se les queda grabado que así son nuestras relaciones.

No es que dentro del colectivo todo sea color de rosas, hay personas muy dañinas como en todo, solo que este es un error que han cometido por mucho tiempo el de presentarnos como gente enferma, en vez de mostrar otros problemas que giran en torno a formar parte de este grupo, y si no abordan este punto de vista enfermizo, sobre todo con películas sapphic o en las que se muestra la relación de dos mujeres, por poco y hacen un argumento sin alma que parece porno barato, solo para satisfacer el morbo de la gente... y en especial de los hombres.

Esta es de esa clase de películas como The Humane Centipede de las que he escuchado muchas veces que te dejan con un mal sabor de boca por el morbo, y no sé si es que dejo volar mucho mi imaginación, si es que he visto mucho o si tan solo espero encontrarme con algo más enfermizo y por eso no me sorprenden.

Con eso no digo que la película no sea grotesca, sino que fácilmente podrían seguir el ejemplo de Irréversible (2002, dir. Gaspar Noé), en la que prefirieron hacer que gire en torno a algo que pasó, y que esto desate el resto del caos, aparte de la atrocidad que ya se había hecho anteriormente.

No me sorprendería que todo lo que sale en A Serbian Film sea algo que haya sucedido o que podría suceder en la realidad, considerando lo enfermo que está el mundo, pero sí me molesta que decidan abordar lo peor solo por morbo, y no con la intención de hacerlo de la mejor manera, y quizás hasta dejar la sensación que me dejó Irréversible; que todo eso es algo que nos puede pasar a cualquiera. "Hasta para ser malo hay que ser bueno".
