Votes: 147,853 | Gross: $7.16M

I'm unashamed that 'The Orphanage' made hairy-chested me scared. I danced in those goosebumps, praising the director for having encouraged me to explore foreign language films. These ghosts brought joy to my life.

2. The Others (2001)

The classiest ghost story of all time. Fantastic twist and Nicole Kidman's finest.

3. As Above, So Below (2014)

R | 93 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

38 Metascore

When a team of explorers ventures into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead.

Director: John Erick Dowdle | Stars: Perdita Weeks, Ben Feldman, Edwin Hodge, François Civil

Votes: 79,984 | Gross: $21.20M

It was hard leaving 'Blair Witch' off this list as it made "found footage" horror popular. Nevertheless, time moves on to where 'As Above So Below' is my favourite in the genre.

4. Saw (2004)

R | 103 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

46 Metascore

Two strangers awaken in a room with no recollection of how they got there, and soon discover they're pawns in a deadly game perpetrated by a notorious serial killer.

Director: James Wan | Stars: Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Danny Glover, Ken Leung

Votes: 382,537 | Gross: $56.00M

The bad people of our world need a lesson. 'Saw' and its sequels are timeous. What makes them more effective is that we've all done something we deserve to be punished for.

5. Midsommar (2019)

R | 148 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

72 Metascore

A couple travels to Scandinavia to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

Director: Ari Aster | Stars: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Vilhelm Blomgren, William Jackson Harper

Votes: 211,622 | Gross: $27.33M

Whereas 'Get Out' was fun, 'Midsommar' is disturbia. It must be further worshiped for its originality... and for the fact that the wooden mallet sent someone else's head into yours.

6. 30 Days of Night (2007)

R | 113 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

53 Metascore

After an Alaskan town is plunged into darkness for a month, it is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires.

Director: David Slade | Stars: Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Danny Huston, Ben Foster

Votes: 165,976 | Gross: $39.57M

'30 Days of Night' was like taking Marilyn Manson out of 'Antichrist Superstar' to drink the blood of Alaska.

7. The Descent (2005)

R | 99 min | Adventure, Horror, Thriller

71 Metascore

A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

Director: Neil Marshall | Stars: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder

Votes: 203,584 | Gross: $26.02M

Minimalism makes every fright a gem. The rocks are thirsty...

8. The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

R | 81 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

In an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer's work.

Director: John Erick Dowdle | Stars: Stacy Chbosky, Ben Messmer, Samantha Robson, Ivar Brogger

Votes: 16,278

Serial killer movies often try to be too intelligent whereas this was an unsettling that lingers longer. Director John Erick Dowdle is the master of the small budget packing a big punch that delivers a knockout profit. I've enjoyed all his movies which makes him a rarity.

9. Candyman (1992)

R | 99 min | Horror, Thriller

61 Metascore

The Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.

Director: Bernard Rose | Stars: Virginia Madsen, Xander Berkeley, Tony Todd, Kasi Lemmons

Votes: 71,574 | Gross: $25.79M

From the opening overhead shot of the city, 'Candyman' felt different. In its entirety, it was menacing, ahead of the teen and gore scares of its era. The mind of writer Clive Barker threw horror upside-down.

10. Hereditary (2018)

R | 127 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

87 Metascore

A grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences.

Director: Ari Aster | Stars: Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff

Votes: 248,129 | Gross: $44.07M

11. Martyrs (2008)

R | 99 min | Horror

A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

Director: Pascal Laugier | Stars: Morjana Alaoui, Mylène Jampanoï, Catherine Bégin, Robert Toupin

Votes: 84,598

Twisted, sick, deranged, cruel - keep adding metaphors that will turn your guts inside out. This wasn't about being scared, it was about being disturbed.

12. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

PG-13 | 119 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

46 Metascore

A lawyer takes on a negligent homicide case involving a priest who performed an exorcism on a young girl.

Director: Scott Derrickson | Stars: Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Campbell Scott

Votes: 120,734 | Gross: $75.07M

'Sinister' was the later smash hit for Director Scott Derrickson but I was more drawn to this exorcism tale. It just pipped 'The Conjuring' and 'Hereditary'to make this list.

13. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

R | 86 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

65 Metascore

A father and son, both coroners, are pulled into a complex mystery while attempting to identify the body of a young woman, who was apparently harboring dark secrets.

Director: André Øvredal | Stars: Brian Cox, Emile Hirsch, Ophelia Lovibond, Michael McElhatton

Votes: 101,321

Norwegian director André Øvredal (Trollhunter) makes a creepily successful step into English.
