What a way to get started for the new decade. One of Clint Eastwood's best ever films, possibly his best, which gave Westerns a contemplative and more realistic edge.

When two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother, they have adventures with the wondrous forest spirits who live nearby.

One of the most wholesome and cutest films I've ever seen, and now my favourite Miyazaki film.

Votes: 506,986 | Gross: $3.90M

A fun debut from Guy Ritchie, which showcases some of the best of his early trademarks - and also some very 90s attitudes towards minorities.

Director: Guy Ritchie | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong

Votes: 9,433

Date Watched: 3rd January 2020 My Rating: 2/5

It's good to see Guy Ritchie go back to his roots, but The Gentlemen is far too unfocused for its own good, and downright offensive and unpleasant.

6. Little Women (1994)

PG | 115 min | Drama, Family, Romance

87 Metascore

The March sisters live and grow in post-Civil War America.

Director: Gillian Armstrong | Stars: Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes

A solid adaptation of the novel, although I think the Greta Gerwig version may have spoiled me in comparison.

Votes: 348,821 | Gross: $51.97M

A mesmerising fictional account of Mozart and Salieri, and one of the finest costume dramas ever made.

8. 6 Underground (2019)

41 Metascore

Meet a new kind of action hero. Six untraceable agents, totally off the grid. They've buried their pasts so they can change the future.

Director: Michael Bay | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Mélanie Laurent, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy

Votes: 89,350

Date Watched: 5th January 2020 My Rating: 1/5

The most Michael Bay film Michael Bay has ever made, though this isn't exactly a good thing.

Probably Sam Mendes' most underrated film, Jarhead takes a unique approach to the psychology of war films, with a powerhouse performance from Jake Gyllenhaal and stunning cinematography to boot.

Perfection. Absolute perfection. Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond gives one of the greatest performances of all time.

12. Dogtooth (2009)

Three teenagers live isolated, without leaving their house, because their over-protective parents say they can only leave when their dogtooth falls out.

Votes: 73,241 | Gross: $0.11M

Date Watched: 7th January 2020 My Rating: 4/5

Equal parts strange and fascinating, Dogtooth is difficult to swallow, but for those aware of Yorgos Lanthimos' signature off-kilter style, it's compelling viewing.

Votes: 218,275 | Gross: $65.81M

Date Watched: 7th January 2020 My Rating: 3/5

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's chemistry has aged considerably well. However, most of Bad Boys hasn't, though it does make for an entertaining time capsule, and an interesting beginning for Michael Bay.

64 Metascore

A group of women take on Fox News head Roger Ailes and the toxic atmosphere he presided over at the network.

Though not quite as incendiary as it hopes to be, Bombshell is a mostly enthralling look at the downfall of Roger Ailes, with powerful performances from Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman.

For all of Michael Bay's faults as a director, The Rock is a genuinely great slice of fun 90s action, with the awesome pairing of Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery.

A fascinating documentary about the Indonesian genocide, though I wonder if I'd have appreciated it more if I'd known to watch The Act of Killing first.

Votes: 214,888 | Gross: $138.61M

Date Watched: 11th January 2020 My Rating: 1.5/5

Even despite my lukewarm response to the first Bad Boys, it's leagues above its first sequel. You can see a lot of the problems that would later be repeated in Michael Bay's Transformers films, like the overlong runtime, and the wholly unnecessary animal sex.

21. Days of Heaven (1978)

Though I'm personally not much of a fan of John Wayne and find his delivery a bit stiff, The Searchers is an awesome Western, with absolutely gorgeous cinematography.

After living a life marked by coldness, an aging professor is forced to confront the emptiness of his existence.

Director: Ingmar Bergman | Stars: Victor Sjöström, Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Björnstrand

Votes: 87,732

Date Watched: 13th January 2020 My Rating: 5/5

This was my first exposure to Ingmar Bergman and what a film to start with. Reflective and often beautiful, Wild Strawberries is tremendous viewing.

Votes: 5,734 | Gross: $40.71M

Date Watched: 14th January 2020 My Rating: 1/5

Breakthrough is absolutely dreadful, and seems to exist for the sole purpose of serving as Christian preaching material. Unfortunately, there's not a good film attached to it.

25. Million Dollar Baby (2004)

PG-13 | 132 min | Drama, Sport

86 Metascore

A determined woman works with a hardened boxing trainer to become a professional.

An extremely compelling boxing drama with stunning performances, Million Dollar Baby is now my favourite Clint Eastwood film.

26. Richard Jewell (2019)

R | 131 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

69 Metascore

American security guard Richard Jewell saves thousands of lives from an exploding bomb at the 1996 Olympics, but is vilified by journalists and the press who falsely reported that he was a terrorist.

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Brandon Stanley, Ryan Boz

Votes: 11,526

Date Watched: 14th January 2020 My Rating: 3/5

Richard Jewell has mostly honourable intentions and some terrific performances, but I didn't find it particularly involving to watch, and the way it inaccurately and damagingly depicts Kathy Scruggs made me uncomfortable.

27. The Graduate (1967)

PG | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

83 Metascore

A disillusioned college graduate finds himself torn between his older lover and her daughter.

Director: Mike Nichols | Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, Katharine Ross, William Daniels

Votes: 116,421 | Gross: $57.50M

Date Watched: 16th January 2020 My Rating: 5/5

What a debut from John Singleton. Boyz n the Hood is a brilliantly told coming-of-age story with an affecting depiction of the struggles of growing up African-American.

29. Mean Streets (1973)

R | 112 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

96 Metascore

A small-time hood aspires to work his way up the ranks of a local mob.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, David Proval, Amy Robinson

Votes: 91,259 | Gross: $3.13M

Date Watched: 16th January 2020 My Rating: 4/5

As Martin Scorsese's first collaboration with Robert De Niro, you can a lot of the elements that would inform his later work. It's a good story that's brilliantly shot, but watching it now, I didn't particularly like Charlie, especially his social attitudes.

30. Bad Boys for Life (2020)

R | 124 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

59 Metascore

The Bad Boys Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are back together for one last ride in the highly anticipated Bad Boys for Life.

Directors: Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah | Stars: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig

Votes: 15,936

Date Watched: 18th January 2020 My Rating: 3.5/5

Bad Boys for Life was nowhere near as bad as I expected, as the removal of Michael Bay has allowed the franchise to gain some self-awareness and shed most of its toxic masculinity.

31. Metropolis (1927)
